I was a newbie at the 2007 Bonnaroo...I've read a lot of the comments about people saying Bonnaroo "isn't what it use to be". I'm not saying it hasn't changed, but the human psyche desires to raise his/her experiences above anyone elses. What I mean is people like to belong to an exclusive club that no one else can belong to, i.e., past bonnaroo experience.
Granted you may have had a better time in the past...you might be right and it probably has changed, but I don't understand why people have to crap on others experiences just because they think theirs was better. I'm special...next year I can say the same thing that everyone else is saying..."it was better last year!"

ummm - where did that come from???
I don't think anyone has tried to "crap" on another person's experience. i think we have all just expressed our experiences.
As for your reference to an "exclusive" club by having past Bonnaroo experience - I really don't think anyone has acted that way - we have simply stated that based on a past experience - this current year was either good or bad for certain reasons and/or differences from our previous experience.
The way I read your post leads me to believe that you think we should not say anything about ever having attended in the past much less compare this year to years past. Or maybe we just should not have a different opinion from those people that have only been this year and, therefore, have nothing to compare this year to.

I just hear it a lot...from everyone who's ever been to Bonnaroo. It's not just you guys, it's prevalent everywhere. From the people I read about on this site, to myspace, to the converations at Bonnaroo, to the people who talk to me about my shirt. It's always the same..."my experience was better than yours"...it's just said in the form of "Bonnaroo ain't what it use to be".
It's a natural human response to think the first time you do something was the best...it just bums me out to hear how bad my experience was in comparison to those who have gone before. Just venting...nothing personal.

I hear ya and nothing personal taken - last year was my first and it was a phenomonal experience - I compared this year to last year's and I think that has been my biggest mistake because when I look back on it now - even with the few issues we had - it was still alot of great music for a great price in the Tennessee sun away from reality for 4 days - can't beat that with a stick

With all due respect, Bonnaroo has gotten better for me every year...until this (my 4th)year. I've always been skeptical about the 'Roo sucks now' crowd too, but this year it did seem different to me (I can only speak for me). When I say that it kinda sucked for us this year, I'm not saying that it is/was the beginning of a new trend of sh!tty Bonnaroos or anything. I'm just saying that I didn't care for this particular one. Everything can, and usually does, fall short from time to time. I hope and believe that it will improve again in the years to come. I am glad that you and many, many others had such a good time this year. I just didn't. That's all there is to it. No hipster posing, been there done that bullshit or animosity towards the "newbies" from me.
I don't really understand why, if anyone gives a less than stellar review or opinion of their own personal Roo experience, they are automaticly looked at as scenesters pissing on everyone else's good time.
You had a good time. I didn't. Is that really that hard to believe?

Every single year, every single person has a different experience, for some it's better than year's past, for some it's not. I actually had a better experience this year than last, (although last year's did truly kick arse.) It just depends on who you talk to, what happened to them, what they wanted out of Bonnaroo, what they got out of Bonnaroo... etc. Just because a person had great times in the past and they maybe didn't this time around, it doesn't mean they want you to have a bad time in the present. I think they might just be doing a little venting too. Anyway, besides that... NOM NOM NOM NOM!
IMHO, this was the worst Bonaroo. That being said I had a better time than many earlier Roos. Confused? Let me explain.
I definitely liked the early Roos better. The people were nicer, food cheaper, atmosphere more laid back and intimate (even with more people.) But this year (my 5th) I took it a little easier, rested more during the day (sadly missed a few shows) and was psyched for late night, saw some AMAZING shows and met some amazing peeps. Even with more rude people, more trash, etc. I had maybe the best time ever.
Roo is a lot about personal perspective. While the conditions will inevitably get more "commercial", times seem to just get better.
I don't know if I have commented on this thread or not, but here is my take on this year's Bonnaroo.
Bonnaroo did seem, "commercialized" to a point, but Bonnaroo needs the money to keep going, so I didn't mind it much. But you were hardpressed to see me anywhere near those sponsored tents, because I thought they were a big waste of time, and half the time they wanted you to sign up for stuff. Fark that man. I came here for Bonnaroo, not a commitment for some product or service you are selling.
The rude people were a small problem. However since 80,000 people were at Bonnaroo, a small percentage of rude people came close to a couple of thousand, so you would run into those people. I blame that on the Police and Tool crowd. Now don't get me wrong, The Police and Tool were awesome shows, but I think the type of crowds they drew were not Bonnaroo-friendly crowds, and didn't really know the type of atmosphere that is exuded by Bonnaroo. While it wasn't a problem, the rude people were like nats on a camping trip, just an annoyance.
Bonnaroo is about the music. So as long as Bonnaroo puts out artist lists like this past year and years before. I really wouldn't care about the "commercialization" of it. Its just a mere fact of avoiding it, and realize its a necessary evil to keep Bonnaroo running, since Bonnaroo is getting bigger and bigger each year.
