Yeah, his talk was easily one of the highlights of the weekend for me. Especially when he essentially made the argument that porn was nearly as creative as what we consider to be "the arts," when he compared life to surfing in their need to balance surrender and control (which is a very interesting concept on its own, the surrender vs control dichotomy), and when he visually laid out that Terry Riley "In C" piece. He said several things through the course of the lecture that absolutely floored me, sometimes because they were utterly hilarious, sometimes because they were quite poetic and moving intellectually.
I was actually disappointed with Tangerine Dream. I got there for about the last 45 minutes and when I arrived, they were riding some good, psychedelic, ambient waves. Then the music just turned to Mannheim Steamroller-style schlock. I couldn't walk away though. It was too weird. The lead guy, whatever his name is, looked like a witch doctor. The percussionist looked like a pixie. And the guitar solos were horribly cheesy. Alas, it was still interesting, just in a watching-a-train-wreck kind of way

Okay, here is a video i took of st. vincent. It doesn't really do the performance justice but I know someone asked about it so i thought I would oblige.

Holy shit, that video is crystal-clear. Well done, sir. You had to be super close to me at that show...I was in the pit, right and the center and in like the second row of people.
^Why April? Are you seeing St Vincent again in April?
Great fest but not the greatest. Asheville is absolutely amazing, I would go back there for sure for a visit anytime, great food, micro brews, cool surroundings, etc.
As far as the music went I would say the best sets of the weekend were Austra, M83, and Crystal Castles.
I would give honorable mentions to FlyLo and OneotrixPointNever.
Moby, Special Disco Version, Brandt/Brauer/Frick were decent.
Tangerine Dream was laughably terrible in its cheesiness.
Ghostland was a visual assault but offered no more than that. The same could be said about Amon Tobin, cool visuals with mediocre music (especially for him, though it picked up when he switched things up on his second set).
The half sets I saw of Flaming Lips and Antlers were good but didn't blow me away or make me wish I had stayed for all of it.

I'm getting bummed out reading this Tangerine Dream hate. Did you guys like them prior to seeing them at Moog? I thought they did a great job of incorporating a variety of the styles they've used in the band's 40+ year existence. I guess I can see how the new age-y stuff could sound a little cheesy, but I wouldn't say that dominated the set.
^ I'm not their biggest fan but I have an appreciation for Tangerine Dream's older stuff (the kind of minimal ambient stuff they were doing around the time of Logan's Run). I went because I wanted to see a legend act and was hoping they would lean on the very sparse ambient stuff. Their set just sounded like an extended jam from a bad Miami Vice episode.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
The reason we have all these electronic acts you guys love so much is partly due to the work Tangerine Dream pioneered. Bob Moog went to Germany at the request of Edgar Frosese and set up their studio. Cheesy or not, they are true artists in my eyes.
I completely understand what you are saying. Just because I didn't like their performance doesn't mean I don't respect them for their talent and for what they've accomplished.

I think Tangerine Dream has had people loving them and hating them for the last 40 years. Something about their sound or direction is polarizing. I realize what they play isn't exactly the cool sound by 2011 standards.
Personally I thought they had a really rich sound and put on a classy show. My expectations were exceeded. I knew it would be a show others didn't like though.

Festival tip: if you're not diggin' a particular show, don't stay long enough to be able to give it a bad review. Find something you like instead, and have a better time.

Fair enough. I guess if Tangerine Dream was universally adored, TWA wouldn't have been like 1/3 full when they finished. Sometimes fandom clouds my objectivity. But as a fan, I thought they were amazing.
I was there for 2 songs (only because Little Dragon cancelled) and I thought they sounded alright, but it was nothing so exciting that it compelled me to stay put. I went over to Holy quack, which ruled. IMO, Friday was the weakest night, though (which is a testament to how amazing this year's fest was, since Flying Lotus and Chromeo were both on Friday and both completely ruled).
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Who else enjoyed the simple but satisfying Cluster Flux?
Geezuz that was mind-boggling. They videotaped me going through it in the unicorn costume, and then Holls as well. I hope they post it.
Oh wow, I forgot: I recorded us going thru it. I haven't uploaded my videos from the phone yet...thanx for the reminder! I'll see if it came out clearly - although there's not a snowball's chance in Hell it will capture the epic freakiness of the experience.
Damn, I actually got a little queasy just now remembering what a Jedi mind trick it was!
