1. Hesta Prynn! (This was my #1 priority and she didn't disappoint) 2. Gogol Bordello (Never any doubt that this was gonna be a party to not miss) 3. The Givers (had never even heard of them before but my friends had and they had great energy, a good sound, and cute lead singers - one boy and one girl so you're set no matter what you like!) 4. Wavves (speaking of cute lead singers...) 5. Sleigh Bells (didn't get to stay for the whole thing but I love the energy)
I missed some shows I wanted to see to some rookie moves. First time at roo had a blast.
1. My Morning Jacket 2. Explosions in the Sky (front row) 3. Arcade Fire 4. Atmosphere 5. Bassnectar/Cold War Kids
Totally bummed I missed Gogol and most of Thursday to sleep.
Aww I'm bummed for you that you missed Gogol. I lost my friday late night to sleep, after catching a little bit of Lil Wayne. It's weird because I would have loved to see any of three acts that were playing after him (Shpongle, Pretty Lights, Ratatat) - and I just realized all three of them are going to be at Camp Bisco that I just bought a ticket for. I guess things can work out sometimes.
What I'm taking from this is that people are completely cool with artists taking the stage way late and playing truncated sets without profusely apologizing, as long as those artists aren't in anyway associated with the genre of hip-hop.
If you tally how late all of these acts were together they were still collectively more on time than Kanye.
Strokes 15 min Bootsy 90 min Superjam 30 min
total 2 hours 15 min late
Kanye 3 hours 30 minutes late
Were the Strokes also late? Because I noticed they finished 15-20 minutes early. Maybe they can't play for more than an hour?
I still want to know why Bootsy was late. Seriously. Someone can PM me, I don't care, I just want to know.
No idea why he was late, but im so glad he was. Walking around with nothing to do after Buffalo Springfield, and I hear a band in the distance. I go check it out, and its Bootsy tearing the roof off the place. So much better than that garbage coming from the What Stage
Was Bootsy playing during M? This kind of pisses me off because I would have loved to see him instead. I also would have gone to Superjam if I had known they were playing later.
Yes the Strokes were late by 10-15 mins and finished early. But them finishing early did not bother me because I got to see a lot of the superjam, which was shockingly under attended.
1 - STS9. - so much better this time than the last time i saw them in 08. the famous sunrise set that i get to see every year at bonnaroo. so much fun. 2- Deerhunter - blew me away. can't wait to see them again and get into the albums when i get back from hiking. 3 - Big Boi - just a really fun time. didn't know Big Boi was so short though caught me off guard. 4 - Del McCoury and Preservation Hall Jazz Band - really pleasant show. Good to get away from all the wild party kids and sit among people who really enjoy music for what it is. 5 - Portugal the man - a rockin' good time.

In no particular order: MMJ- the new stuff sounded great live and it only got me more excited to see them when they come to Boston in August. Arcade Fire- Got in the pit for this one. The show was full of energy. They're on my must see again list. Widespread Panic- awesome show, awesome night. My entire group came together for this after splitting up for a good portion of the weekend due to personal preferences. It was the perfect ending to the weekend. Gregg Allman- Stayed in That Tent from Railroad Earth on. Got a spot on the rail. Actually made me cry a little bit when he played "Melissa". STS9- left GT for this, so I missed the beginning, but what a way to end my Saturday night..they were awesome.
Honorable mentions- Buffalo Springfield, Grace Potter, Shpongle, Robert Plant & Band of Joy, Mumford & Sons, OCMS

1. Arcade Fire - amazing show felt like they played much longer than they did for all the emotion contained within it. 2. The Strokes - Didn't have any grand expectations for this one but it really came off great, feeling like they were very comfortable up there and performing without an agenda. 3. Big Boi - Brought the party as much as anyone at the fest did this year. 4. Deerhunter - All the positive energies of heading into the weekend were harnessed and twisted in interesting, satisfying ways throughout their sonic shifting set. 5. Mavis Staples / Loretta Lynn (tie) - Both delivered incredible, genuine performances that surprised and impressed me beyond expectation.
Show history Been to woodstock- the one where everything was lit on fire when the peppers started a tribute to jimi hendrix Many lollapaloozas Locabazookas Bonnaroo w pearl jam and metallica 100's of local indoor n outdoor shows
1. Eminem - reference track he used didnt bother me. Was an epic show that was well thought out tight put together and kept me dancing 99% of the time. Honestly best show ive ever witnessed live.
2. Gogol bordello - kept me dancing super fun energy after eminem
3. Robert plant- ramble on (ramble on fkn wow! Historic moment for me)
4. Band of heathens- great blues country floyd set incredible musicians
5. Grace porter and the nocturnals -- best rock blues female voice ive heard ever live. Fantastic screaming wailing and singing!
You're probably wondering how my top two could be bands that overlapped. Well, I was able to catch about an hour of both Plant and Explosions in the Sky. Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands of all time, Explosions are one of my favorites of the past 5 or 6 years. Wasn't hard leaving Plant at the time, but after hearing what I missed...it's just eating me up. But had one of my better Roo moments watching the sun set during "The Birth and Death of the Day."
3. Mumford & Sons
I just don't really have to explain anything there. If you were there, you get it. Amazed at how such a young band can provide some of the finer Roo moments I've had in 5 times attending - even though I only caught the last 3 songs of their 2010 set.
4. Buffalo Springfield
Neil's one of my favorite songwriters of all time. If you can understand the "out of body experience", than you know how I was feeling during this - and for the record, I wasn't on any you know what. I was fortunate enough to hear them and was up pretty close. Actually I was behind the orange wall that leads back to the media area but was able to see partial stage and screen very well.
5. Arcade Fire
Love 'em. Neon Bible tour 07 was one of the best shows I've ever seen. But the What Stage? Freakin hate it. There's very few shows (headliners especially) that I enjoy on the What Stage just because I think there's too many people. It's hard for me to really get into/lose myself/enjoy/whatever, a show on the What Stage because I can never get close. When I'm that freaking far back, way past the sound booth, near a giant white tent (maybe a mist tent, located kinda right-center) I just get way too distracted by all the surrounding people being loud, drunk and obnoxious. Never understood why people go to shows if they never actually pay attention to whats going on. Somehow, I guess because of conflicts, it was pretty simple to get up close for Plant. Actually, I was up against the fence, right below the video screen on the right. And I got to that show maybe 5 minutes before it started.
MMJ didn't make the cut, and again, thats the same situation as Arcade Fire. Had very high expectations, have seen them before but not since 05, and actually only twice in 05 and thats all I've seen them, one was Roo, other was a club in Cincinnati. Definitely the worst show of the 3 I've seen from them. However, after hearing that 4 hour marathon late night 08 set, I knew they couldn't top it. And don't tell me they did.
Other highlights...
Thursday 1. School of Seven Bells 2. Freelance Whales 3. Rev Peyton
Friday 1. Ray LaMontagne 2. Bela Fleck 3. Walk the Moon
Saturday 1. Low Anthem 2. Deer Tick 3. Black Joe Lewis
Sunday 1. Bruce Hornsby 2. Mavis Staples 3. Head & the Heart
I thought about writing a retrospective of my Roo experiences but I think I've waited too long. I should've included it in my review for my blog. I've been in 05, 07, 09, 10 and 11 obviously. I wanna say this was my favorite Roo. But I think the music was much better in 09. Still, I left the farm feeling like it really was by far my best Roo.

1. Bassnectar (I've been a huge fan and this was my first show. It blew my mind. I have never danced harder in my life. I was literally dripping sweat by the end of it, and I got to crowd surf. And his crowd was INSANE--even people well outside the tent were raging hard.)
2. Girl Talk (I had low expectations for this show hearing from many people that his shows are hit and miss, but I must say it was a huge party and his beats kept me going the entire time. Though I'm still really disappointed that I missed STS9.)
3. Pretty Lights (This and Bassnectar were my top 2 priorities of the festival, but I had higher expectations for this set. The songs he played were great but it's too much like listening to the album. I feel as though I would have enjoyed it much more if I had never listened to him before. But when he dropped that Summertime track... I was lost in his light show. Also, it was awesome that he played until sunrise. Walking 45 mins. back to camp, alone, and full-zombie at 5:30am was so worth it.)
4. Eminem (I had very low expectations for this show, but it was the sh!t! He put on a hell of a performance, and the crowd had so much energy the entire time.)
5. Matt and Kim (While I only caught maybe the last 30 minutes of this show, if that, they sure knew how to get an audience pumped up! The small portion of it that I witnessed was a lot of fun, though I was a little too drunk at the moment.)
What I'm taking from this is that people are completely cool with artists taking the stage way late and playing truncated sets without profusely apologizing, as long as those artists aren't in anyway associated with the genre of hip-hop.

Well played. My hate for Kanye will accompany me to the grave, I do believe.
It is different when an act is supposed to start at like 7pm and goes on at 8:30pm. Starting an act 4:25am instead of 2:45am is bad because most people are sleeping or walking back to camp. If Kanye was to hypothetically start at 10pm and went on at 11:45 people wouldn't even be talking about it now. People do need to get over though. Worse things have happened in the world.
1. The Black Keys 2. The Black Angels 3. Gogol Bordello 4. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears 5. Atmosphere
so many great shows, Arcade Fire, Primus, Buffalo, Pretty Lights, Galactic, Ratatat, gaaah so mannnnnny!!! The first two are definites but the last 3 are pretty difficult.

Big Boi was definitely one of my highlights that year. I went in not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. I was more familiar with Outkast then a lot of his recent solo work but the show was an awesome late night set. I wish every year they had a rapper of his caliber in that same slot.
