We ended up not following the detour and traveled some other backroads to get back on I65... it shaved off about 2 hours of traffic, but we still didn't get back to chicago until 5am.

Governor Beshear,
My name is Cory XXX and I am a resident of Illinois, however I am writing a letter to you over an experience I have had with your state over the last two years.
Every year, on the first full weekend of June, there is a music festival located in middle Tennessee in a small town named Manchester, called Bonnaroo. I have been attending the Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival for the past four years, and my group of friends and I drive I-65 through your great state. Bonnaroo's normal ticket sales hover around 80,000 people, with a good percentage of ticket sales coming from northern states, also sending a lot of travelers down I-65 from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and many other states. In addition to the Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival Nashville holds a huge Country Music Festival the same weekend. Often times, this sells the city out of hotel rooms, and fills the Bridgestone Arena to the brims for the Country Music Awards. According to research on the visitmusicity.com website, Nashville has 24305 hotel rooms. Under the assumption there are two people per hotel room there to attend the country music fest, which is another 48,000. Again, with a good majority of the US population in the north, it would mean you will have several thousand travelers driving down I-65 this particular weekend.
While traveling through your state on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, your roadways were very clean, open and although there were construction areas, there was little traffic build up. Furthermore your construction zones heading south on I 65 were very well lit, and had proper signage regarding how far ahead the work zones were. The problem lies on my return home on Monday morning June 11. As we began approaching the town of Upton, about ten miles out, we ran into stand still traffic. We sat in this traffic for over two hours, without any roadwork signs posted until about two miles from the roadwork. When we did approach the "roadwork", I noticed that the only work that was happening was a group of workers standing on the side of the road, drinking their coffee with no actual work being done. There were three pickup trucks with flashing lights, and a group of ten people standing behind some barricades, watching as miles and miles of traffic tried to merge into one lane on I 65. Due to reduced speeds and standing in traffic, it turned my normal eight hour drive from Nashville to Chicago into a twelve hour drive. This is not the first time that this happened to me in your state. One year ago on the same weekend, coming home from the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, I ended up standing, not moving for three hours, as we waited for your construction crews to paint new lanes on the highway which turned my ride home from Nashville into a fourteen hour experience.
I fully understand that roadwork must be completed, however I find in illogical how you would allow your Secretary Mike Hancock, given his long list of experience with your highways, the approval to do roadwork on a highway that is the main artery for thousands of travelers during this weekend. If there was major roadwork to be done, I could justify it, but in 2011 you were painting lines on the highway and this year, it appeared like your crews were going to be installing guard rails, but instead looked as if they were taking a break after placing out barricades.
Due to your poor planning, and like most politicians, being out of touch with what normal citizens are doing, I will begin to do my best to not purchase any products from Kentucky, to ensure to not give my money to a state that does not have common sense. Boycotting Kentucky products has now become solitude among my friends and we plan on sharing this with as many people as we know unless something is done about your management of your highways. Although we are only a group of thirteen people, and you are writing this off as nothing, we plan on sharing our experience with as many people as possible to help spread the word to boycott your state, unless you share with us your plans to not cause these delays in traffic next year during the Bonnaroo/Country Music Fest weekend.

Although they basically told me to fuck off, they did respond which makes me happy.
Mr. XXXX,
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet was asked to respond to your recent correspondence you sent to the Governor’s Office concerning construction work on I-65. We apologize for the delays associated with this work. The work you referenced is an important safety project to continue installation of cable barriers along the two lane sections of I-65. The Department of Highways strives to minimize impacts during construction work, while balancing the need for completing the projects in a safe and timely manner. For example, on this project, the contractor was restricted to only working Monday through Thursday, and was not allowed to work during the peak traffic time on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Also, closures of the inside lanes were only allowed for certain phases, such as pouring concrete for the barrier posts. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, there will always be situations/events that cause increases in traffic volumes or delays. We appreciate you bringing the annual music festivals in Tennessee to our attention, as we will be able to take these events into consideration for future work on I-65.
If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Patty Dunaway, Chief District Engineer at our District 4 Office in Elizabethtown at 270-766-5066.

Prince's usually has an armed security guard, so it's cool. Personally, I like Bolton's better because they still pan-fry. AND there's a new Bolton's open that's closer to my house on the south side. Pepperfire has the highest food hygiene rating of all the hot chicken shacks. Prince's is the lowest, but they're the original. Duddits, we'll definitely be hitting up one of these. Just be prepared for the aftermath.
One of my friends was told everyone was going to Bolton's for lunch and asked if she wanted them to bring her something back. She (having never eaten there) said, "Sure, bring me back a couple piece of extra spicy (she is a kentucky girl, so she thought it would be KFC extra spicy).
Kentucky is the king of starting ALL KINDS of road projects and taking forever to fix them.
Very true. I'm a life long KY resident and I will assure you, there will be construction on every interstate in Kentucky on every weekend, including the Bonnaroo weekend. I have traveled I65 to Nashville numerous times over the years and have always experienced construction in that same stretch of road. I don't know what they are doing, but they have always been doing it. If any of you drive I75 in Northern Kentucky, it is exactly the same way. Always under construction with nothing in particular being done.
That is the Cornbread Mafia at work for you it is real and it sucks the lifeblood cash out of Government here nothing like the Good Ol' Boys network at work. That is a clipping I found about the Radioligist also I heard that hospital covers up rapes and muggings in the parking lot Dr.s that were on call get called in to deliver a baby and then get a DUI driving home from the hospital which is quacked up because that same Dr. I know for a fact had called the hospital security to come get him from Applebees before so he would not get a DUI. Also there is a local KKK compound where they live all bunkered up not far from where I live. You should see them roll into Wal-Mart on Doomsday Prepper Day all Swastikaed out and buying stuff from China on sale and then they go hide out the rest of the month. I can go on and on but by now a picture should be formed in many peoples heads.

Some girl with a Kentucky plate just cut across Groop at a diagonal and hopped the entire line. Red car, 4 people in it, she has short brown hair and a bandana and coffee shop bumper stickers - watch out- and cut me off on my way out of Groop now. I really hoped this thread was about her. Opposite of radiating positivity. So. Dear Kentucky Girl, I hope you rolled over some campsite leftovers and get a flat.
Non-existent road work but still closing down lanes, some actual very small road work but lanes closed for miles, and an overturned fireworks truck that blew the top off of the truck driver's truck.
Have not read this thread at all, but this remains very true. My 3ish hour drive from Columbus to Louisville always takes around 4 because of their non existent construction causing lane closures right before Louisville. It made me miss Gary Clark Jr & like 2 others at Forecastle last year. Ugh.
