I did hangout last year VIP style and enjoyed it a great deal. I am a bit surprised to see such dramatic price increases. I realize the cost of doing business and the like when it comes to concerts. But last year I paid 550.00 for VIP with no early bird discount and this year the early bird is 699.00, advance is 749.00, and then regular is 849.00. However, when looking over the amenitities there is no change from last year. Any thoughts?
I think it has more to do with the fest's national profile. The first year (2010) was way undersold, so it makes sense that the early bird deals were better for 2011. Since it sold out way in advance last time, they don't really need to rely on the deals to lure people in. The most expensive regular advance passes aren't anymore expensive than last year, so I'm not complaining. That does seem like a pretty steep hike for VIPs, though.
I've noticed the spring/summer rate thing, too. That was one of the nicest parts about the last two years - all the condos were still on their spring rates. I guess they got smart and realized they could make some more cash. Greedy bastards, without Hangout there's no way everywhere in Gulf Shores would be booked solid on that weekend.
One of my students just booked a condo at Buena Vista thru VRBO.com for $800; it's a penthouse unit that sleeps 6-8. I found similar units in the same tower that sleep 4-6 for roughly $125/night.
Hotels - esp. those w/a gulf view & a chain name - can run upwards of $300/night.
One thing I've noticed w/these rental companies: the weekend of Hangout is listed as "Spring 2012" for some and "Summer 2012" for others; the rates for the latter are waaaay higher. I'm hoping to book this week before it's slim pickins. Last year I got a free condo about 12mi away and I will NOT repeat that mistake again!
we booked ours pretty late last year(after we got taxes back) and still got one right on the beach only 0.8 miles away. whatever you do don't book through kaiser realty. everything was fine except they tried to screw jade out of her tickets.
I'm trying to work out plane logistics (with Holls' famous golden heart helping me!), and if something seems to work at a decent price and without much of a hassle, I am innnnn!!!
In order to make this work, I would need some kind Southern Inforooster help with pick up/drop off! I am flexible with day/time/airport as long as it monetarily makes sense, but here is where I need help:
:::PICK UP::: 1. Friday morning. It seems the earliest I can get into the area airports is 10:00 AM. (I can fly into PNS at 9:56 at an ok price, for example).
ORRR
2.Thursday night. I would be willing to fly into any of your local airports on Thursday and then drive in with you Friday AM. I swear that I don't bite... hard.
:::DROP OFF::: I am willing to fly out of any airport at any time on Monday!
I am also open to any other idea someone might have (ex. if they know of a shuttle, etc).
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Meyer ran a 4 nights for the price of 3 discount last year. I called them earlier this week and they wouldn't say if they were doing anything like that again for 2012. My plan is to reserve something before the lineup drops, so hopefully they'll have the info on all the discounts and such sometime in January.
That is a huge price jump for VIP! Damnit! I really want to do VIP, if for anything, just to avoid lines and the gestapo search getting in. You don't get searched at all, even bags, getting into VIP.
Kinda pissed me off bigtime to be from the area and have my nuts molested getting into Paul Simon...

I got the same deal last year and we had a great room with a view less than a mile away. This year, that same room for the same amount of time is $600 more. We're thinking of taking the money we would spend going to Hangout again (roughly $1800) and taking a quieter, less crowded vacation somewhere else.
I got the same room I had last year at Island Winds a year in advance and it was 400$ more. Bitches. It's being split several ways so it's not that that big of a deal, but still.
Damn...my students are telling me that many places won't rent to Hangout attendees, and some even have a "25 & older" requirement. I swear, that wasn't the case last year... WTF happened w/these condo owners? Sheesh...
You have to be 25 to rent a condo in Gulf Shores. It's been like that as long as I can remember. Doesn't look like they are doing a local hook up this year! 3 day passes for 50$ on black friday last year......man they need to hook it up again

Too many security deposits from last year got used for repairs by drunken idiots? Just a guess.

It could just be another example of the baseless animosity seen in the comments section of those news articles posted earlier in this thread. Some of the locals seem to think Hangout is about on par with a Black Mass or something.

Gulf Shores is a tourist town. If you check out prices for these condos on Labor Day they are gonna be more than Hangout. This fest starts summer early for the beach and they are taking full advantage of it...
Newly registered to the site but was lurking a bit last year pre-hangout.
Booked a 2 br condo approx 2 blocks away from the fest about an hour before the early bird onsale (3 nights for less than $600) through Meyer...Glad I did.
I live in Pensacola and was unable to attend anything but the late night shows due to financial issues last year...made sure I will be there this year tho and with no worries about driving since I'll be staying basically on site.
Who else has made reservations and picked up Early Birds? It's going to be a long/anxious 6 months until the fest.
I didn't get earlybirds, but I booked my condo for 2012 during the fest last year w/ 400$ down. Epic view so it was totally worth it.
I'm sure the condo rental company will have some extra tickets available...probably at EB discount too.
I was able to add 3 from Meyer to my condo rental over the weekend at $159/each with no extra fees. The one I got from the Hangout site ended up costing $180+ after fees.

You mean for this year?? I'll def be doing that if so.
Word on the street is that Phish is headlining....
Which street?
The one where people are talking about Phish headlining the Hangout. Kind of sucks for me actually I do not think I am going back and they usually only do one festival a year I was hoping for a Bonnaroo repeat.
