Great weekend overall. Favorites were: M83 Jack White Crystal Castles Andrew Bird Gotye Oberhofer The Civil Wars and The Black Keys. I missed Weezer, Gary Clark Jr and Iggy due to various reasons.
I am hoping I don't have a stress fracture in my ankle after the festival. It starts off the day fine, but if I use it too much I don't want to put pressure on it and it doesn't feel it's muscle related. It's not painful, but rendered me to hobbling around over the weekend. I wore my old sanuks for all three days along with a backpack and could have overexerted myself. May go get x-rays to see what's up. Could be worse, but I hope it's not an issue for funfunfunfest. I seem to go hard at festivals.
My personal favorites were Big Gigantic, the Roots, Zola Jesus, Gary Clark Jr, Iggy, Crystal Castles and i managed to get rail for Neil so that was the pinnacle of my weekend.
Hope everyone had a great weekend, I really regret not getting to meet any other inforoo'ers!

Congrats on getting rail for Neil. I had a great time at this fest and got to meet some great Inforoosters. The fest had some bad planning for stage and schedule spots at times. Booking a bunch of currently popular bands on one side of the park on Friday wasn't a good idea. Alabama Shakes crowd made it nearly impossible to even cross that side of the field while I was free to roam for Afghan Whigs. After their rise in popularity The Lumineers should have been given a bigger stage. They had over three times as many likes on the website as the two acts playing on big stages at the same time. It was made even worse with Weeknd canceling. When the crowd migration from the end of Two Door Cinema Club got stuck with the overflowing Lumineers crowd I had to make my getaway by climbing the fence and walking around the backstage are until I could come in through a side entrance by the Bud Light Stage. Other than that everything was just about perfect.
My Top three of the fest were NY&CH, FatherJohn Misty, Afghan Whigs. Willis Earl Beal was really entertaining. He could be very soulful at points and then sound just like a young Tom Waits at other times, not to say that Tom hasn't got soul. It was great to see him start with barely anyone at the stage and then watch the crowd grow as those passing by were drawn in by this great showman. Esperanza Spalding was another highlight. I knew I would enjoy her set, but didn't expect to love it.
Well, that was awesome. Ok, so I have a lot to say about ACL, and none of you probably care, but that has never bothered me before. So...
17 Things (for now) About ACL 2012
1/I have to mention meeting Inforoo people first, because honestly, that was a key highlight. Hanging out with EAP and/or Fuzzy at Gary Clark, Father John Misty, Michael Kiwanuka and Crystal Castles was just great. Chatting between songs and before and after sets, just getting to know them a little bit better and seeing that they're just as cool and kind as I thought they were from just typing posts here back and forth. Mrs. toml30 has a great picture of the three of us (different from EAP's) that I'll post eventually.
2/Best 10 sets at the Fest: Neil Young and Crazy Horse Lumineers Gary Clark Jr Roots Alt-J Thievery Corp. Whigs Father John Misty Childish Gambino Michael Kiwanuka (HM: Florence + the Machine) (HM: Trampled by Turtles)
3/Set that was way better than I expected: Zola Jesus
4/Set that was not as good as I expected: Avett Brothers
5/Set I really should have gotten sleep for but stayed to the bitter end anyway for some inexplicable reason: Red Hot Chili Peppers
6/Only time I felt old - The Lumineers did a rocking cover of Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues. I was singing along and moving (like I always do) and a little Betty to my right leaned in and said - "man, how do you know all the words to their new stuff already?" Seriously. Felt. Old. (yet somehow superior)
7/Best 5 cover songs: - The aforementioned SHB - Lumineers - Paul Revere - Roots - being from DC, this cover was especially great as they gave a shout out to both Chuck Brown, DC Godfather of Go-Go, and MCA and did a go go version - Sweet Child O' Mine - Roots - Simon and Garfunkel's America - First Aid Kit (seriously gorgeous) - Hendrix's May This Be Love - Michael Kiwanuka
8/Best White Stripes Impersonators - He's My Brother, She's My Sister
9/Five Differences I found between Bonnaroo and ACL: - No camping at ACL - it was nice to stay in a hotel room each night, but it took a long time to get back to the room and I missed the late nights and short walk to camp. - Fewer wooks at ACL - this is not a judgment of good or bad, just a fact. - Up close to a show, I found the crowds to be very similar, but for the shows in the back, many more at ACL take it easy. Lots of people just set up chairs under a tree or behind the chair line and sit there all day. The music is basically pleasing background noise to an all day tailgate party. Which is great, just not for me at a music festival. I think this has a lot to do with so many locals can attend ACL whereas with Bonnaroo, you're traveling so you're going for some music. - ACL has more green and more city at the same time than Bonnaroo. In other words, there was grass everywhere. Rich lush grass in some spots and trees. But you could also see the skyline of Austin in the background and you're so close to the city for late night in town. I'm a city boy in a wooded neighborhood, so maybe it was just more familiar to me - but I loved the nighttime views. - Bonnaroo is more of a community and ACL is more of an event. Again not judgement, just my overall sense. I'd go to another ACL in a heartbeat, but Bonnaroo is still #1 in my heart.
10/Best After Show - Alabama Shakes and Lee Fields and the Expressions. So much energy from both groups. I would like to be friends with Brittany Howard and have coffee and chat about life and stuff.
11/Set I most regret missing: Tie - Civil Wars/Afghan Whigs
12/Artist who got the most people really dancing but still came across like a giant summer's breeze: AVICII
13/Sets for which we Bacon'd (tm) - Alabama Shakes, Trampled by Turtles, Michael Kiwanuka, Alt-J, Zola Jesus, He's My Brother and Ben Howard
14/Moment it (almost) most felt like a real music festival: Right by the front of the stage for Michael Kiwanuka and the skies opened up and just started pouring. We had ponchos, but didn't even care to put them on. We just stood there and got drenched and it was beautiful.
15/Moment it most felt like a real music festival: At the end of that same day and after another downpour during the Roots, standing in the dark, watching Neil Young, with the city lights behind him, stomp all over the stage like an old T-Rex. We were tired, drenched, muddy, filthy, cold and our feet hurt. And it was frickin' awesome.
16/Person who is the best festivalgoing buddy in the history of festivalgoing buddies - Mrs. toml30. 25 acts, 20 miles of walking, late nights at bars, festie food, bad wine, and she still said she had an amazing time and came home with me.
17/Did I mention the part about meeting awesome EAP and Fuzzy?

I blame the education system. SHB is at least as important as Hamlet and it sure as hell is more important than The Scarlet Letter, Heart of Darkness, and plenty of other things I was forced to read in High School.
I know! But I've seen them six times (twice with the mrs. at the HFStival in both '94 and '96, I believe), so we skipped at the last minute so we could get close for Trampled by Turtles.
Ah, that's a pretty good excuse then. I've only seen Afghan Whigs once ('99) and can't wait to see them friday in nola. I walked away from Guided by Voices set at DeLuna (it was pretty bad) to catch Trampled by Turtles. I wouldn't be able to walk away from Afghan Whigs though. I really enjoyed Trampled by Turtles.
tom, i am so glad to have spent time with you and mary! i knew as soon as i met you, that you were good people. thanks for the waters and the fun times. i hope you both enjoyed austin.
i was interested to see what a newcomer had to say, since this was my 8th ACL and you summed it up perfectly. there are a lot of people just there to "hang out" as opposed to us music freaks. it is an entirely different beast than bonnaroo. i'm thinking about skipping it next year and trying something new!

As far as covers go, Civil Wars covered Portishead - Sour times and Michael Jackson - Billie Jean. their set sounded amazing and it was the biggest crowd they havve played to (they said).
I will post some videos I got later including Sour Times.

I tried to meetup, but I'd already consumed a lot of alcohol by FJM's set, so after Fuzzy told me you guys had moved locales, I decided to just stay by the sound board and party.

4/Set that was not as good as I expected: Avett Brothers
Ok I'm dying of curiosity....what was it you didn't like about the Avetts/their set?
Well, I actually like them and have seen them a lot over the past 3 years. This particular set didn't seem as good as all the ones I've seen before. Partially because it was heavy on the new album which hasn't grown on me yet - and that meant staples like Colorshow and Murder in the City had to go. Partially because it was one of the few shows where I was in the way back and so we were surrounded by people talking, yelling, and not paying any attention to the music at all. Still a good show, just not as good as I expect from them.
Funny aside - at one point, my wife pointed at the screen and asked what Will Ferrell was doing getting up on stage. It was Chad Smith, RHCP drummer, guesting on the drums for a song. They do look scarily alike.
