I learned yesterday that, although it never actually said so on the show, Cheese was Randy's dad.
Yea, I think that was confirmed by one of the creators but at the time the show aired there was confusion because of the last names. Cheese's last name in season 2 is listed as Flagstaff and Randy's last name was Wagstaff....but I think that was the idea...they altered it a bit and Randy was the illegitimate child of Cheese.
Did not realize it had been Flagstaff in the earlier episodes. The reason we started looking into it was because in the last few episodes, they seemed to very deliberately refer to Cheese Wagstaff.
We finished Season 5 last night. I picked up a lot more this time, which made it more enjoyable for me. Not that I didn't like it the first time, just liked it better this time.
I think we are going to give Treme a shot next. Have never watched it before, and we are pretty much running through the HBO shows, having recently watched The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, and Six Feet Under (I feel like I'm forgetting one).

Only eagle-eyed viewers realized the mistake. They didn't call him "Flagstaff" in any dialogue (I don't think) but his photo was up on the board with all the other suspects and had his name written. So it was like a screenshot thing. After people made the connection some others pointed out the screenshot as proof he wasn't the dad but I think it was confirmed outside of the show that he was meant to be the dad. Just one minor connecting part.

I think you'll like Treme. Just remember it is not The Wire redux. Much less about crime and cops and much more about bureaucracy/politics and music.
Similar to The Wire though, the true main character is the setting/city.
Full disclosure I haven't finished Treme yet. Working through it slowly.

I need to go back & finish Treme myself. Brad did not like it so we stopped watching it. I enjoyed it though.

I talk fairly frequently about how it was during "The Hunt" episode of The Wire that I fell in love with the series. This would be episode 11 of season 1, which officially makes The Wire, for me, the hardest television series to get into.
I was browsing around on some random Wire-inspired Tumblr and came across this quote. I realized this was the exact moment when it all came together for me. Big spoiler for those who haven't watched season 1:
Listen to me, you fuck. You did a lot of shit here. You played a lot of fucking cards, and you made a lot of fucking people do a lot of fucking things they didn't want to do. This is true. We both know this is true. You, McNulty, are a gaping asshole. We both know this. Fuck if everybody in C.I.D. doesn't know, but fuck if I'm gonna stand here and say you did a single fucking thing to get a police shot. You did not do this, you fucking hear me? This is not on you. No, it isn't, asshole. Believe it or not, everything isn't about you. And the motherfucker saying this, he hates your guts, McNulty. So you know if it was on you, I'd be the son of a bitch to say so.
While I respect your opinion, kind sir, do you really want to put 2 below 5?
I do agree that 4 is the best.
Yup. Season 2 was better in terms of a solid story, but it just didn't hold my attention, at all. It almost made me give up on the show - I just cared so little. And that one guy who was a whiny little shit was such a whiny little shit. I don't mind unlikable characters, but there are unlikable characters I like to watch and unlikable characters I don't. He was the latter.

I do understand where you are coming from, Ziggy is infuriating. But for some reason in my memory I have a softer image of him.

You learn to gain some sympathy for Ziggy towards the end because you start to really see what an aimless joke he was and how his own father prioritized other things over him. The reason for the duck and the big spending is because he is such a loser fuckup who just wants to be successful in something....anything. He can't make it as a dock worker, can't sling on the corners, and can't even get the crime stuff right. There's a lot of buildup and a lot of sadness. That scene where he talks to Frank and then goes back into the jail cell is so heartbreaking for a character who you constantly say "WTF Ziggy?" about.
Also, Season 5 usually gets a boost because it's still connected with the kids of Season 4. The serial killer stuff detracts a bit but the Michael/Dookie/Marlo stuff is awesome and makes things better. Same for the tales of invincible Omar.
Just finished the series, really enjoyed it. Need to rewatch before I give my final ranking, but for now:
Tier 1: 4,3 Tier 2: 1 Tier 3: 5,2
From all the hate I've seen season 5 get, I still really enjoyed it. I could have done without the newspaper stuff, but like ITM said, the stuff with Michael, Dookie, Marlo, and Omar more then made up for it.
The dock stuff in season 2 just didn't connect with me, similar to the newspaper.
A newspaper? At least the docks tied into the drugs and shit. Gonna be an long season 5...
The newspaper part is actually kinda cool. It's other things that make season 5 so 'meh'.
Hmmm...im getting a dock feel from it. New characters in the last season is throwing me off a little. From the start its like Jimmy is boozing again for some reason and they yank the plug again. The season 4 ending had it seem like the gang was back with a vengeance and going to tackle the case in the final season to wrap it up all nice with a bow. Just a little shocked at the kinda split storyline again after 3 and 4 rebounded so nicely from 2.

The cool thing about the newspaper story is the way it parallels the politics of the other jobs we've seen in the show. Things like a few good guys trying to make a difference being held down by the bosses and decision makers higher up is neat to see in another setting.

pure greatness. god what a moment.
This quote goes from great to work-of-art once it is run through the inforoo curse word filter.

So is there a reason Jimmy dives back into the womanizing drunkard version of himself season 5, or do the producers figure its the last season lets give the people what they want?

The job makes him do it. It's no coincidence that he's clean and sober and responsible when he's walking the beat as a uniformed cop in season 4. He obsesses with his detective work and his worst side comes out. That's basically what it comes down to.

Like itm said, it's all about the job.
But also the theme of the whole show is a testament to how things never change. McNulty is no exception.

Just wanted to check in on here. I'm just just starting season 3. To be honest season 2 wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Sure it felt like I was being tortured at some points (especially scenes involving Zigg) but it all came together at the end to satisfy me. Watching the two seasons so far my ranking is
1 2
This show is definitely not the best show I've ever watched, but it sure as heck keeps me watching. Usually when I watch a show it's because of the likability of the characters. So far, the main plot/theme has kept me more hooked that any one character. I'll probably post in here again when I'm on season 4.
Today I realized that "My Name is My Name" is a line from The Wire.
I just realized this while watching the show last night. That album title didn't really make sense to me, but after watching this I was like "OoOoOoHhHhHh I get it now."
