The journalism aspect was alright, but i really like all the development and shit going on with the police and jimmy and lester and daniels and all that stuff. i enjoyed season 5 more than others i think. was able to really just look past that journalism part

I can look past it too. I looked at it as more of a plot device rather than a subplot.
i really liked 3 and 4, 1 was great cuz it was the start. but really like the plot lines in 5 and put 2 on the btm just cuz it's a little out of place with the other 4
I forgot these two. I actually gasped during goodbye Cheese. I scared the crap out of my coworker when I did it.
Also, I didn't like Michael. I did at first, but as his character progressed I started to really hate him. I liked when they went to the amusement park, because it reminded me of why I liked him at first. But then when they got back I instantly started hating him again..
Horse shit. Michael is one of the best. Honestly he was probably the most tragic character in the series. Seriously. Michael rules. You suck.
Also I forgot about Avon and Stringer reminiscing on the balcony. That is in the top 3 best scenes. "It's just business."

Michael is definitely a tragic character. Especially you consider that by the end of the show he was still only 15. But as a person, I just hated him. I can't explain why. I just did. Probably because he was just wasted potential and it made me angry.

Hated Michael? He's like.....my favorite thing from Season 4 and 5. His journey to becoming the new Omar was amazing. Wasted potential? He's now the new badass stickup boy.
I can see how if someone were to watch season 5 live it probably would have disappointed fans. When I did the binge, I found Season 5 much better than 2 because of the number of great scenes that were peppered in that final season.

Yea, one thing I'm getting from this re-watch so far is that I don't find the McNulty/Serial Killer stuff to be so outlandish. They really set it up well with McNulty' drinking like a fish and really going off the deep end. Plus the fact that McNulty "got away with it" already by getting that dummy detective to go along with it and leaking the story to the press. Nobody cared, though, because they were homeless folks. So at that point McNulty already saw that he can do it.....but it wasn't until Freamon helped him sensationalize it that it really took off.
Here's an excerpt from a really good interview with David Simon about the McNulty storyline (full link to interview below):
Some have said that they didn’t find the serial killer storyline believable.
Is it impossible to stage a serial killer? No. One thing you won’t hear is any pathologist who’ll say, “Oh, there’s no way that could fool us.” That is the one way that postmortem injuries can be made to look antemortem: It’s strangulation, bruising around the neck, and then suspend the body in a dependent position, make it so the head is in a dependent position.
[As a reporter] I saw something almost become a murder … And afterwards I took a chief medical examiner to lunch to talk to him about it, just because it was interesting to me. He said, “Yep, that one can fool you.” And I put it in my back pocket. That was almost 20 years ago.
Did you feel that those two characters could be led to extreme measures after years and years of finding ways around obstacles in the department?
Freamon had been told no for a long time, for most of his career. And McNulty? Shit, I think he’ll try anything once. His intellectual vanity has been on display since the first season. But if people didn’t believe it, they didn’t believe it. I’m second-guessing people a little bit, and that’s not fair — every viewer’s entitled to their own opinion. I think what they really didn’t believe was that their favorite characters were behaving in an unethical way. That bothered them. I think TV shows are supposed to deliver on certain things. Omar is supposed to go down in a blaze of glory. McNulty is supposed to either lose and suffer or finally win, but he’s not supposed to walk away from the rigged game and do something that bothers viewers.
There's a lot of stuff to love about the fifth season. I think the newspaper storyline is less exciting than any of the other "new" storylines in previous seasons because with the docks there was still crime and unique characters filling the screen. On the newspaper one they have good characters but it's definitely slower and less interesting (even though I enjoy it). I love seeing how awesome Gus, Alma, and some others on the team are at their job compared to Scott, that asshole who keeps bullshitting his way to the top and always seems upset. Him and the bosses really piss me off but that's the whole point.
Fifth season is great. Just finished the episode where Omar hears about Butchie. I absolutely love that ending in the tropical setting with Omar having tons of kids running up to him and excitedly shouting his name while he gives them candy. Such a great contrast to how the kids react to him in the hood where everyone calls out his name and runs as far as they can.
It drives me crazy when people list Omar or Bubbles as their favorite or the best character. I wonder what someone gained from watching the show when they say that. To me, it is the equivalent of saying Ringo is your favorite/the best Beatle.
Whoa. I mean......I like a wide variety of characters but those two right there are definitely towards the top of the list. Omar was a legend and Bubbles had one of the most heartbreaking arcs of the entire series. Definitely two of my favorites (though Michael, Chris, Freamon, Avon, and especially Bodie are right up there with them).

i did love that scene when bunk tries to get freamon to talk mcnulty off the ledge, and he totally buys in with mcnulty and bunk is just like "WHAT THE FUCK DUDE?"

Yea, that was one of the best. Just watched that episode.
"You did something wrong here" and Bunk thinks Lester is on his side. Then Lester is all "This can work....but you need to sensationalize it" and "They're already dead so who cares? We don't care. Dead guy doesn't care. Nobody cares". lol

Ok, apparently I need to clarify this. The character if Micheal was fine. He was well written, well developed, had depth and showed dimension. The reason I don't like Michael is because he is condemned Dookie to life as a junkie. Michael is a less awesome version of Omar. Maybe I'm just still mad at him for beating up that little kid.

Why? Bubbles' story is damn near inspiring. It's tragic, but it's also a story of redemption. He hit rock bottom, several times, and bounced back. All while being ridiculously positive and honest. Yea, he was a junkie, but he never denied that. He knew he had a problem and he lived with it. Without hurting people.
Fuck you Billy, I love Bubbles. I'm on my way to Chicago right now but I don't even want to hang out now until you take back what you said about poor ole Bubs.

Michael became Omar. Dookie became Bubbles.
That's not Michael's fault, though. Dookie had a shitty situation to begin with and he avoided doing what he should have. He avoided going to school after Prezbo looked out for him and he could have gone a few different paths. Michael also sent Bug away but didn't condemn him to being a junkie. Michael sent away the people he loved because he knew that they would get hurt while he goes on that suicide mission. He sent Dookie away out of love.
Dookie becoming a junkie was his own doing. He accepted the life just like Bubbles had so long ago.
Still mad at Michael for beating up that little kid? Are you serious? That little shit deserved it and was showing no respect to authority and was stealing/lying to them. Kenard wanted to be in the game and got too big for his own good. That same little kid ends up working for Michael later on so it seems like he understood that he took a risk and paid the consequences.
Michael is one of the best characters with honor and integrity. He got stuck in his situation when backed into a corner because of the molester coming back into his life and then he got out because he saw how everything Marlo and company were doing is bullshit. I think you have a skewed view on his character because Michael was one of the more noble ones on the show. He was closed off for so long and found his calling through a set of shitty circumstances.
Am i the only one that actually enjoyed the journalism subplot? I thought it was well done and gave a little insight to the degree some dying newspapers may operate under such conditions. That being said;

athe comment about him beating up the kid was more of a joke. I see everything you're saying. And agree with a lot of it. I guess he just rubs me the wrong way because of his ability to kill and have no emotion about it. That and he is such a smart kid and a good person, yet it's wasted on crime. This is how I felt about almost all of the kids though. Season 4 was really hard for me to get through actually. The kid stuff really got to me.
I guess he just rubs me the wrong way because of his ability to kill and have no emotion about it.
He follows a code. Same code as Omar. If he killed with no emotion he would have shot that kid that ran out the back of the house when those three other people were killed inside. Michael kills people who are in the game and who are coming after him. Even in the end he just does what Omar does (kneecap a guy who isn't going along with the plan). He is betrayed by the people who brought him into this world and so he has little emotion about killing them (Snoop, Monk, etc.) but it's not like he's a stone cold serial killer. He's just a player in the game now and he's independent. But like Omar I don't think he goes around killing innocents. Only those in the game who have it coming.

4 1 3 2 5
i still enjoyed 2 for sure, just picked the others over that one as they all kinda fit together better
