Ziggy Herc, so did he set up the thing with Marlos number as a plan or what? Marlo, main reason I didn't like season 4 as much as everyone else. Loved the schools part of it but couldn't stand Marlo. He should have died, but I get it. Valcheck Kima All of the politicians and police chiefs other than Daniels.
Also, I wondered why they showed Rawls in the gay bar and never mentioned it again. I thought that was gonna be a big plot line down the road, but nothing.
I don't get the hate for the last season. Tied everything together and built the entire city over the course of the season. Many of the scenes you guys mention come from that season.

More I think about it, the more I dislike Marlo. The only person he ever blew the whistle on was a girl. Everyone always talked about him being so hard but Chris and Snoop did all his dirty work. They should have given him a hobby or some back story on how he got to power cause it didn't seem like he deserved it to me. Avon and Omar deserved the respect. I liked Marlo at first, but he turned in to a robot. I couldn't believe how much the plot revolved around him in the later seasons. He was a biyah biyah. With that said, this is my favorite television series ever.

It seemed to me they did all of Avon's scenes in one day. None of the scenes with him towards the end were really inspiring, or worth remembering really.

Immediately started watching it again, and season one is just great. It's different in so many ways from all of the other seasons. Who is the best director in the series? I know they used a lot of them and I'm trying to see if I enjoy some episodes more than others due to the direction.
I love that they show so much footage from cameras in the opening season. And it's crazy to realize that The Greek is actually the one running the entire city. You don't realize it until later, but that's pretty cool. I understand why folks say their opinions change after watching for the second time.
So I'm a few episodes away from finishing season 5. They definitely jumped the shark with this storyline but it's still very enjoyable. Better than season 2

When you read some interviews with the showrunners and hear some crazy true-life stories the stuff that happens in season 5 isn't extremely unbelievable. Just definitely not a normal way out of things. Either way...definitely a little odd but it's one of the few weak spots for The Wire.

I'm a big season 2 apologist. I know its not the best season of The Wire, but once you start your second watch of the series (and you will) I think you'll appreciate season 2 more. Personally I'm a huge fan of the Frank Sobotka character and I don't think I fully grokked him until my second watch.
So as a backstory, I watched Season 1, started season 2 for a few episodes and decided to skip to season 4 out of impatience, watched season 5, and now I'm watching season 3. Eventually I'll finish season 2.
Anyway, I think Hamsterdam is equally as ridiculous as the fake serial killer story. So not one reporter, citizen, or non-involved cop has brought this place up to anyone yet? I'm on episode 7 so maybe it's going to happen soon, but it's ridiculous. The customers are driving in from all over the city. That place would be found out
The Stringer and Avon side story in the latter half of season 3 is fucking awesome. Seasons 3-5 are so damn good. As little as Season 2 interested me the first time I tried it, I have to watch it now. I'm one episode away from finishing season 3. S3E11 was one of the best of the whole series!
I appreciate his story and struggle. I just blame him for Zig's existence.
Huh? Why would you blame Nick's dad for Zig's existence?
I'm talking about Nick's dad / Ziggy's uncle.
I flipped the two family wise. I hated Nick too, and he would be my least favorite if Zig wasnt in the show. The whole storyline really killed me there. If the Sobotkas was a show/storyline by itself, I wouldnt watch it.
I only have two episodes left in the series (Season 2, episodes 11 and 12). I'm excited to see how it ends but simultaneously upset that it is all almost finished. In retrospect, I wish that I would have watched the show in order, but I don't think it really took away from the overall experience.
When I have an opportunity, I want to sit down and list my favorite scenes, characters, episodes, etc. while it's all still in my head.

Wait a year and re-watch them all in order. You'll be surprised at how much you like Season 2 more when you know EVERYTHING.
Why? Bubbles' story is damn near inspiring. It's tragic, but it's also a story of redemption. He hit rock bottom, several times, and bounced back. All while being ridiculously positive and honest. Yea, he was a junkie, but he never denied that. He knew he had a problem and he lived with it. Without hurting people.
Fuck you Billy, I love Bubbles. I'm on my way to Chicago right now but I don't even want to hang out now until you take back what you said about poor ole Bubs.
I don't want to make this a #hottake so I take back the part about entertaining. I certainly found Omar and Bubbles entertaining and I'm not mad if people like Omar/Bubbles. I do understand that they were based of real life people but Omar was really unnecessary to the larger story. He was cool but the show suffered when Omar would rob someone and they would spend a few episodes trying to kill him. As for Bubbles, he started out as a narc, killed Sherrod, and after that I really never felt the need to root for him. I understand that was an accident but in that show, everyone in the game paid for their mistakes except Bubbles.
I just think that when people talk about Omar and Bubbles as some of the best parts of the show, they are missing the heart of what David Simon was trying to do. I feel that it is similar to movies that use a simple plot to tell a larger narrative. Like if someone read Animal Farm or Lord of the Flies and thought it was about talking animals or shipwrecked kids. The Wire offered so much more than a cool drug deal robber and a funny junkie.
I know this is a necro quote, but just read through some of these comments.
I wouldn't rank Bubbles as my favorite character, but he'd probably make the top 5.
I'd say Bubbles did pay for his mistakes. Sure, it wasn't with actual jail time, but the emotional hell he went through to bounce back is pretty massive to me. When he attempted suicide in the interrogation room, I remember blurting out loud, "No, Bubbles!" He paid for his mistake with Sherrod everyday of his life. You saw how much that wrecked him.
My reason for liking Bubbles isn't because he's a funny junkie, it's the honesty and humanity you can see in him, even if it's through a thick layer of grime.
I don't know, I really enjoyed watching his progression through the series and was emotionally invested in Bubbles.

Bubbles is one of the most sympathetic. Even as bad as he was he was still a bit noble. Had some kind of code. I still get so damn happy at the end when the news article comes out and his sister opens the door to let him upstairs. That's five seasons of payoff played beautifully.
