First off, lets define some of (what I believe to be the key words)
sabbath - a special time of prayer or rest, can also refer to either Saturday or Sunday, depending on the religious sect. ascension - The act of rising to an important position or a higher level Canton: A - Hall of Fame, because NFL hall of fame is in Canton, GA (i gather) B - A political or administrative subdivision of a country C - A state of the Swiss Confederation
The one thing I want to chip in FOR NOW is this: 'Ascension linked to versions of the Sabbath' could mean that this performer or band's popularity rose (atleast partially) on account of the performer / band covering a Black Sabbath song.
ok my personal opinion is that "canton-bound" is a future NFL HOF inductee and "Ascension linked to versions of the Sabbath" refers to a former Black Sabbath member who either died or just left the band... there's quite a few

My initial guess would be the band Tally Hall. They released an album called Good and Evil last year. I believe they are from Michigan but live close to Canton County. I'm not sure how to link them back to the Sabbath portion of the clue though.

How does the Canton reference fit in?
Wait, so Black Sabbath will be in Europe during some Roo dates, which is why we've counted them "out" for Roo. Is there a Canton somewhere near where they will be playing during that time??

Alex Ebert (Edward Sharpe's lead singer) was named by his father.

If you go back to somone who is partially associated with Black Sabbath and "Canton-bound" then I was looking for members of Black Sabbath for a short period of time who play with a potentially HOF bound band....
First name I found was Ian Gillan of Deep Purple who is touring in 2012. Only available roo date is June 9th but they are in the US at that time.

There is a Canton in Cornwall, UK but it is not really close to Donnington (where Download Festival is).
