Cocoon had to do with aliens. Not so much a trip to space as someone from space's trip here, but maybe?
Rupert Grint played Ron Weasley, a speckled lad, in the Harry Potter films. He was also in a movie about an astronaut which was called Thunderpants. The answer must be Thunderpants Johnson's Hillbilly Orchestra.

IMDB synopsis for Cocoon -- fan written, but seems to be accurate as it hasn't been altered by by the community. "A group of aliens return to earth to retrieve cocoons containing the people they'd left behind from an earlier trip." Another trip to space? I now wish I had seen the movie. Haha. What's in the cocoons?
Going out on a limb here but could it be They Might Be Giants? If the clue last year refers to Apollo 13/Ron Howard as Opie, could this one refer to the movie Apollo 18? TMBG have an album called Apollo 18.

Well, since it so closely mirrors -- maybe it would be safe to say that this is probably a metal act? And it will be a combination of a Ron Howard character, and a movie directed by him to find the answer? It's a stretch. But I mean, why else re-hash a clue?
Opeth is currently touring with Mastodon and Ghost. I think Mastodon has been ruled out elsewhere, but could Ghost be a possibility?
Going along with the thinking that it could be Ghost, the second part of the clue could fit. "A speckled lad leads us down a bewitching path". They say their concerts are rituals to convert the audience to become satanists (leading us down the bewitching path). The singer is also the only 'lad' that looks different (speckled maybe?) than the rest of the band, who wear all black. And they are on going on tour with Opeth from April to May.

I am going to cry. Seriously? THIS clue? THIS was the one they had to revisit?!
Anyway, after all the hell we went through with this last year, I'm wondering if maybe this year's speckled lad isn't one of the OTHER speckled lads we considered last year. Like Laika, perhaps?

I'd like to back to day tripper's Willie Nelson logic. It really coincides with the wake part. Also the last tour date listed on his website is June 5th in Nashville. He's already going to be in Tenn.
