YUP! I am 'tu obsessed!!! I made a Rootu, a Moogtu and I just bought the makings of a Wantu (I'll probably start tonight). ;D I am totally down to help in any way- advice or making and shipping.
Schulzie- Give me a minute and I'll link up the helpful posts for the basics.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Here you go Schulzie - theres a bit of a tutorial in this thread - Good LUck!!! and def let any of us vet-Tu-makers know if you need help or tips!! Definitely get rolls of tulle for a beginner - but if you feel like delving into more advanced math etc, you can get bolted yards of tulle. For that I suggest a circular cutter and a cutting mat.
Add stuff with a glue gun, use ribbon, use glitter, use sparkle gems, felt, whatever! You can do it up any way your MIIIIIND can think of!
Hi Everyone! All you need from the craft store (JoAnns, Hancock, Hobby Lobby) is your waist size length of 3/4-1 inch non-roll elastic - you can buy it by the yard, so you dont need to get a whole roll. Then whatever material you want, in 3-6 inch wide, and 24-36 inch long strips. (if you want tulle, they make 25 yard long, 6 inch wide rolls that run $3-5 dollars each in billjions of colors at hobby lobby, bout 4-6 rolls per tutu). Then just tie them on the elastic, or do a simple slipknot over the elastic as seen here (start at pic4, www.skiptomylou.org/2011/11/01/no-sew-tutu-tutorial/) BOOM! ROOTU!
Also, I think Im gonna jump on making a couple new Tu's soon as well. And also just posting some randar creations on the etsy site. Once the tulle starts taking over my living room, it's like kudzu. It doesnt stop. .....Im getting excited thinking about all the tulle that's gonna overrun my house soon!

Ok kids... I started to copy links to posts and then converted to copying the post. I am super busy at work and so this will have to do. It's from pages 1-11 and then I gave up:
Mayo will be much better at explaining this. Lay your Tu flat as you can with the tulle extended out in a circle flat as you can.
Take a ruler, tape measure, your cat, kitchen utensil, - whatever - and place it on the top of the band. Lets say we are using a soup ladle. Put the top of the handle on the edge of the band. Cut the tull at the bottom edge of the scoop all the way around.
When done, fold the Tu in half, straighten the tull, and measure again with your ladle and make final tweaks. This will give you an even Tu all the way around if that's what you want.
If you have a round quilting cutter that works the best. If not scissors, steak knives, exacto knives, and chewing are all okay. ;D
I wanted a fairy Tu so lengths on mine are all different. ( And tull = No for me) Will try to post tomorrow.
As far as embellishments go, Im all about a glue gun. I've also done some extensive research on bow tying. I'm also a craft hoarder, so I have boxes of partially used gemstone packs, half-yards of ribbon, etc. So I've tried to use up anything I have to make things SPaRKLE! Be advised though, hot glue gun glue is indeed - HOT.
Amanduh - YES - they make glitter tulle! It's probably the same stuff Bunny used - they make it in rolls, and it's a little sticky - like it sticks to itself. But it's BEAUTIFUL. I like to use it in every RooTu that I can. BUT for anyone who didnt buy pre-glittered tulle, they DO make spray glitter, just have to find it in the kids crafts section or the paint section of the craft store!
I have not found rolls of tulle at Michaels. CALL THEM before you go - you should ask for "25yard long rolls of 6'' wide tulle" and see if they have it beforehand.
Joanns will have it in the wedding section in rolls, but no glitter, and not any "wacky" colors. If you have to go to Joanns, you can get some rolls, but will need to find the tulle in the fabric bolt section if you want anything outside of black, red, pale yellow, pale blue, tiffany blue, pale pink, hot pink, purple, white or ivory. Depending on how much you get in rolls, you will need about 2-4 yards of your wacky color from the bolt section.
A typical Rootu, with strips cut at 36inches long (for a 18inch long skirt) takes about 6 rolls.
AT Joanne's they do have good choices on tull - but be prepared to PAY for the really pretty stuff. The larger net 'tulle' as around $1 a yard, decent baseline tull - 1.50 ish, the nice stuff - anywhere from 3-6 a yd.
Yds depends on how wide you cut your strips. I am working with 4-5 inch strips and it takes approx 90 strips at that width to fill a 36" non roll 3/4" elastic. So if buying by the bolt yard - thats about 10yds. If you want it reallly full - bump up the yardage and cut 6" strips. Lets say you are doing a three color tu.. buy 4-5 yards of two colors of the cheap material, and 1-2 yds of the really good stuff, then find that glitter spray for the cheaper material.
Cutting the strips - The bolt tulle will be foled in half. Leave it folded. We used the dining room table and a yard stick. Take the end of the folded tull and line it up with your yard stick. Cut at one yard so you have a folded 1 yd of tulle. (Make sure to put a book on the end of tulle to keep it in place when you cut.
Repeat so you have 5 2 layer (because of the fold) pieces stacked up. Now cut again lengthwise in 4, 5, 6, inch strips as you like.
First - Mayo - I apologize in advance... this is RooTu's Swamp Yankee style..
Second - yes my feet are clean.
Third - quilting cutters are Damn sharp - always keep your hands to the side!! The cut is shallow but razor blade sharp so lots of blood letting. Lesson learned
Go RooTu'ers. Hope this helps. (And I really only needed the bevy to have the ballzies to do this video. Consumption has gone way down while on the QsarTu mission. )

Question for Mayo: I love the ribbon in my moog-tu. Is it harder to make them with ribbon than with elastic? Any secret tricks for this method?
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this too, Mayo! I bought extra ribbon for my Wantu and was thinking about incorporating it... (JoAnn's used to have you by your ribbon by the yard, but now it's by the roll?)

Bumping this since I'm about to be making my own RooTu!!! And one for dreamingtree too.
Emma & I stayed in Hobby Lobby for almost an hour tonight. We're going to try our hands at making them next Saturday while the boys go to some local wrestling event. Wish us luck!!

OMG I am so excited to see how they turn out. Once this renovation craziness is done and we are moved in, maybe I will find time to try it also

Well thank you CKS! And Bonz, Im not aware of this ribbon development at JoAnns! Sounds like blasphemy...
OKAY LADIES - Here's my take on ribbon in the Tus. It is not necessarily "harder" to make them. Basically, you see how Fawn makes hers holding it down with her feet, and I put the end of my elastic in the lock down top of the caboodle. As long as you have something holding the end of your elastic (or ribbon) it's not "hard" to make. I prefer to use elastic for the main part of the Tu, then I sew on ribbon to the ends for the Tie only. simple in and out stitch is fine! I put a little more stitches in it if I hand-stitch so the ribbon wont tear out.
I prefer to NOT use ribbon for the entirety of the tu, and here is why (and particularly for Bonnaroo use)::: After a long hot day of Roo'ing, ribbon can stretch out and get weak. You can end up re-tying your tu all night long. AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT! Elastic will hold it's shape. Also, Say you oh-i-dont-know... eat 4 amish donuts a day at roo. elastic is going to accomodate for that. Also, elastic will move with you as you dance, and ribbon will not "hold on" through any dancing unless you tie it so tight it's cutting into you, and I envision a ribbon only tu riding up to your natural waist. Additional to all of that - I buy the "non-roll" elastic, bc it wont roll and end up being a tube of elastic cutting into your skin.
All that said, I know that most of you aren't sewers, and dont have sewing machines to put the ribbon on the ends of your elastic. My advice: give it a shot with your ribbon! But go with a wide ribbon, like 1'' or wider. then wear it around for a couple hours and see how you feel with it! We all have different comfort levels etc, so my reasons could be completely out of line for others
I am rEALLY excited to see what you RooTu first-timers turn out! Im soooo excited that people are trying to make them for themselves! Good luck!!!

I have a confession to make. This thread gets me excited! This year I am going to skip the plastic bags and go with some tulle. I cannot wait to see all the Tus at Roo.
Hey, Bonzai and Matt a Wanee-Tu? or WanTU? What ever you want to call it, I like it! I was already prodding people on the Wanee forum about Tutu Thursday. I am ready for this!

Thursday sounds good to to me. I'm thinking about trying to do a Eat a Peach album art Tu.
Reading through all this mess makes me REALLY want to make a roo-tu for my first Roo!! How does one go about wearing one...just throw it on with whatever else you are wearing, or making it its own outfit?

I just wore a plain white tank with mine (it was yellow and white) and got some yellow short shorts to go underneath. It was super comfy and was so much fun to wear. You can really do it however you want though

Welcom Cowgal! What Dreamingtree said - you can just throw it on over what you're comfy in! One year I wore mine over whatever knit/jersey dress i had on that day. Last year I was feeling saucy and wore it over shorty shorts with a yoga bra and a tank. Whatever floats your boat!
Oh and *edit* I just posted the first 3 of the 2013 Lineup Tus on the etsy site. Hopefully they are acquired and LOVED by their new owners!

I was at Walmart this morning and they had TONS of tulle for $1.65/ a yard. They had shimmery and regular in all colors. I don't know if that is a good price, but it seemed pretty cheap.

I'm wearing a tutu everyday, but I'm totally down for a tutu Thursday. Sarah is down too! So Waneetu or Wantu? Both work for me
