Someone being an industry plant doesn't mean their music can't be legitimate or good so I'm not sure why it matters tbh. If I like the music, I like the music.
When I think "industry plant" I imagine a scenario like a LiveNation artist being given higher-than-deserved billing on a LiveNation festival, artificially inflating the artist's value and branding them as more popular than they actually are. Idk if this is an actual thing, it just what I think of.

There has to be something dishonest for it to be a plant. Cyn was being promoted by whoever, but she wasn’t being represented as something she wasn’t. Mason Ramsey on the other hand was billed as just a random little boy yodeling in a Walmart when the whole thing was orchestrated by his management.
The whole concept of an industry plant has always been kinda funny to me, so its entertaining that it’s being discussed here lol.
Imo, even legit, known “industry plants” are silly to me, as most of them had to be discovered by someone. If someone in the business liked their sound, and promotes/pushes them because they thought other people would like their sound, isn’t that just a normal case of being successful in the music industry? Pretty much the only instances that I think are legit are cases where someone has a family member or parent or something that serves as a connection and gets them promoters. But even then, if they make good music, I could care less.

Sounds like this could apply to Sturgill Simpson at Bonnaroo last year. But he's obviously not an "industry plant".
Billie is just an industry plant that can't sing or even write a song. But teenagers are eating it up, so unfortunately she probably will be headlining soon.
Her show in my city moved from a 3300 capacity theater to a 8000 capacity mini-arena before tickets even went on sale
What does industry plant even mean? Is that just internet code for “person with a good manager who makes music I don’t like”?
Pretty much.
Remember industry plant Dua Lipa? She's one of the biggest acts in the world at this point.

The truth is almost anyone we've ever heard of we've heard of because of marketing moreso than them being the greatest musicians/songwriters/performers out there.
I'll use Austin Rivers, as a non-music example. Austin Rivers is the son of a very powerful NBA coach, and played on his dad's team for several years. He's become a serviceable-to-good NBA player, but how many people with his talent level and less opportunities have washed out of the NBA by now? I'm guessing a lot.
So-called "industry plants" in the music industry may have had those advantages, they may not have, but someone decided that that person might make them some money. In the case of Travis Scott, Post Malone, Dua Lipa, Billie Eillish, Mitski, St Vincent, whatever, someone thought "hey, we can probably sell this person" and they turned out to be right. It doesn't mean that person can't make some really good music, but it's also not worth saying "I only know about this person because they're undeniably good". Someone pushed them forward.
Go back to the Strokes, or Taylor Swift, or Mark Ronson, or Bowie, or whatever. They made some great music, but we most likely know about them because they were rich and had connections. If they were some incredibly talented but poor kid from Nowheresville, Kansas, they might have never had the means to play shows in the first place.
"Industry plant" is an awkward term, because, yes, it's an industry, and there are gatekeepers to celebrity, but also let's not pretend privilege exists everywhere but the music industry.
Lorde’s album was boring and not memorable. This one is actually interesting and has some fun parts. I went in with no prior knowledge and I’m not concerned if she’s a plant or whatever. It’s worth an honest listen imo.

It’s okay but Melodrama is such a memorable and mature pop album that speaks to so many in my age group. Homemade Dynamite, Sober, Liability, Perfect Places, so many BANGERS.

Gotta take into consideration the rising generation this one is speaking to at the moment. My wife loves Lorde and I’m definitely not criticizing her, I just wasn’t that impressed with her last album. I get the hype, Coachella billing, etc, after listening to this though. It might not be as mature but it’s modern, dark, and kinda bad ass pop.
I didn’t love Melodrama, a few fantastic songs. But that Billie Eyelash is is really just a bad rip off of Pure Heroine imo. A little edgier and more modern but not in a particularly compelling way
