Camped in camp Boba Fett. This is my 9th Bonnaroo and the first time I've ever had anything like this happen. My entire campsite was ransacked. Tents ripped open, things gone through, but luckily nothing was stolen. Nothing valuable out in the open. I assume they tried to get into my car, but couldn't. Because our neighbors car was broken into and a phone and some other things were stolen. Not to mention, they broke my tent zipper, which was not very cool considering it poured rain all Sunday night and Monday morning. If this is what Bonnaroo is turning out to be, this might be my last one. Instead of all these useless, spineless, dickless cops invading peoples campsites on their ATV's, writing citations for possession, perhaps they could actually do some good and go after the theft problem. But they won't... there's no money in that.
Every year this thread pops up and every year it just severely bums me out
I will post my positive experience. I have gone 4 years in a row and not myself, my SO, our mates, or neighbors have had one single break-in or stolen possession.

The Police ride ATV'S into peoples camp sites??? I honestly didn't know this!

To be fair, this sort of thing happens every year and at most big festivals. This isn't a "new" thing even though you've managed to avoid it for 9 years. I've managed to avoid it as well. We just got lucky.

What would you recommend they do? Do you want them hanging out in all the camp sites? I'm sure plenty of people would be pretty upset if there were police patrolling every where. I'm sure there would be a lot of complaints about that.

I think he's talking about on Monday there were cops on ATVs flinging mud and just going around being annoying. Most were screwing around that sort of thing. I didn't see any through the week though, just on monday.

The cops are already in the campsites. This year (unlike any other year) I have seen the ATV's riding through campsites, stopping and harassing people for smoking bowls. One of my neighbors unfortunately got this wonderful treatment this year. And is just another reason I believe Bonnaroo is going down the tubes. I LOVE BONNAROO! This breaks my heart! I'm not just being a naysayer. I'm being honest. This is not what a music festival is supposed to be like. I have never heard of such harassment of festival goers at their campsites than I have heard this year. Nothing is good about this.
I was sleeping in my tent in tent only Saturday night when I suddenly woke to see two mysterious figures in my tent going through my stuff. when they saw I woke they started touching me inappropriately... it was davemaynard and crazykittensmile

And it happened all throughout the weekend. Not just Monday. I'm sure this is why they had a different layout of the organization of the campsites this year. Making wide rows, so cops can roam the campgrounds with ease. It has never been like this.

tell your friends
I have no idea what you are talking about. You must have been dreaming.
Theft is awful and I'm sorry to hear of each instance of it.
Regarding Po in the camps, I was grabbed by two deputies roaming the camps Thursday but only had a lung-full, which they were amused to watch me hold until I couldn't any longer. . . "So you're giving us the silent treatment? You gonna say something?"
Searched me (I had nada), warned me to stick to the booze, and told to have a good time.

I'd like to here more people's experiences with cops riding through campsites on ATV's and harassing people with bowls. Anyone else have this kind of experience? Or witness it happen?

Were they dressed like cops and did you see a badge?
Always be on the lookout for fake cops. People pretend to be cops all the time to easily steal druqs from scared people. If they write you a citation then they're legit. If they take your stuff and walk away with a warning....you just got robbed.

They rode up on us Monday morning at the RV. They asked when we were leaving. When we said we were waiting for it to dry up some, he said that wasn't happening, and they would start running us off at 3pm. Then, as Abra mentioned earlier, they rode around doing a bunch of donuts and such which was a super great idea since the roads in RV camping at least were already too far gone to drive on.
Yeah ITM ^^^ we did. We were just hanging out at camp after brunch on Friday, and 2 cops on 2 atvs pulled up in front of our cars, got off their ATVs and walked up into our camp. Asked us if we were having a good time, to which we said, Yeah, great time! being all friendly Then he said, "It can't be that good a time, I don't see any dope around here." as he and the other cop were eye-effing our entire set up. At this point I realize they're there to bust people, and I say, "no sir that's not really necessary for fun. would either of you like a water? it's hot out." and they both kind of realized they were in a no-corn zone, and had the look on their faces like, "oh, not everyone here is smokin' dope." and politely said thanks they had their own, wished us a happy and safe bonnaroo, and left.
It was weird. Never in all my years. But I just treated them nice and they were nice back. No real "harassment."

That sounds like guys being dicks and trying to clear things out. Were they definitely cops? Or just security guys?
I'm more curious about Thursday-Sunday and them rolling through camp sites and harassing people that way.

Thanks. That's really interesting and I dislike hearing that.
Again, were they police officers or just security guards working for the security firm? Like did they have Police on their outfits? If they were local law enforcement then that's a reason to be angry. If they were just security guys then they may have been looking for free stuff. I assume they were legit cops and looked like it. I really don't like that kind of thing.

They were from the Sheriff's Department based off their shirts. I didn't have any encounters before that, but I am a terrible person to base things off of.

The ATV's were riding through the area I was camping in several times a day. The neighbor who got the citation was minding his own business in his own campsite with his friends, when the ATV'S drove by, got off of their ATV'S, walked right up into their campsite, and started searching everything. After they were done, they wrote the guy they saw smoking a citation. This happened on Saturday morning.

Totally lame. I really don't like hearing that kind of stuff happening. There's always going to be asses that will try to ruin things for us.

Definitely law enforcement. Full on boots, belts, weapons, badges, vests, etc. Their gear was one reason I asked them if they wanted some waters - they were loaded down. I vaguely recall "police" or "sheriff" or something of that ilk on their uniforms. Def not just security.
Again, I want to say, that I wasn't "happy" about it, but they weren't unpleasant to us. I don't like the idea that the cops can trounce on into our camp at any moment, but it sure would have been nice if they'd been around when my shit got ransacked.

The two guys that grabbed me were def deputies. Shirts said so and so did their language and actions, oh and the guns on their hips.
I saw them coming out of the corner of my eye and the next thing I knew they grabbed both my arms. No citation, again I didn't have anything on me at THAT point. Just a lung-full.
They wanted to know who my black friend was, searched my bag, and let me go. I'm guessing they thought we were partners in crime roaming the camps.

Totally understandable and thanks for clearing that up. I, too, would be annoyed for them coming up to my camp site and trying to catch us doing something wrong. The question becomes who gave those orders? Did Bonnaroo say to do it? Did the sheriff's dept have them do it? Were they acting on their own accord trying to write some citations/make arrests?
Overall that's really lame. I look at Bonnaroo as a place that is different from everywhere else but sometimes it's things like this that remind me I still need to be careful.

Gave me a scare.
Interesting. Now that you mention it, there was a black woman at our neighbors campsite who got busted. Hmmm.... I wonder......

If you are going to engage in something illegal there will always be a risk. Some places greater than others of course. Because of that I/you should go into it accepting of the possible consequences. Also, I think everyone may be mad/annoyed at the wrong people. Roo bought the farm, from my understanding the Cops have to have the invitation of the owners to roam the campgrounds. They are doing their job, it is Roo who are allowing them to do so.

I get that, just don't see a reason for them to be douche bags about it. There are plenty of ways to "protect" people without harassing.

I understand what you are saying Abra. Some people are jerks, including some cops. As long as they do not violate the law or the constitution in doing there job I suppose they do not have an obligation to be nice about it, and that does suck.

I was with Dave, Abra, Sarah, Taco, and Al. When the ATV's rolled through to see when we were packing up, I had some just sitting there on the table. Not covered or hid in any sort of fashion, literally sitting out in plain view. They didn't poke around or ask about it, and I didn't jump up to try to hide anything. I got the vibe that they, as with most other security and such on the farm, were mainly looking for the obvious things. Ya, cops suck, blah blah blah . . we all have said it at one time or another, but I have had these close encounters a few times before on the farm and had zero issues whatsoever.
edit: These were the folks that had pretty official looking Polo shirts on with an embroidered badge and "Sheriff's Deputy" on it.
