Update: I successfully defended my proposal this morning! I just got downtown and got my wristband. On the walk out I passed AC himself! Without stopping I gave him a brief thanks. I'm now walking to the Hill (I'm typing on my phone). I'll be the guy with 6-7 festival wristbands and wearing a suit and tie (too rushed to remember to take it off).
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Made it home safely around 3:00 this morning. What an incredible time!! Wish I could have met up with you guys but honestly was a bit hung over yesterday morning after partying at Big Ears all day then celebrating UK's win over Louisville all night. Hope they can keep the run alive again tonight and that everyone enjoys their last day at Big Ears.
Please tell us of the lowdown of this festival attendees
It was fantastic. I felt it had a lot of Hopscotch's vibe to it with a different flavor of its own. I saw artists attending a bunch of shows. Almost all the patrons were super respectful during all the acts. Thankfully, it was much busier than I expected it to be. Almost every show I went to filled the venue they were at nicely. As always, the Bijou and Tennessee are just amazing places to catch a show act.
My top 3 goes: 1. Son Lux - I liked Lanterns a lot, but his live show was really a step beyond what he does on the album. 2. Dawn of Midi - This trio are so tight that it's just a joy to watch them perform. 3. Dean & Britta - This was the surprise pick. I went in with no expectations, and I just really liked the way the show came off.
The frustations for the weekend were few. Due to some logistical stuff that was mostly out of their control, the Bijou ended up running way late on Saturday which caused me to lose out on my chance to see Low. Also, there were some sound issues during Vatican Shadow. It ended up being a cord that had gone bad, but they didn't figure it out until it was 3/4 of the way through his show with it having intermittent crackling and popping throughout. Lastly, some of the times were off in the app. They had a festival newspaper they had around that had a schedule for all three days. This ended up being accurate while the app was off. It just seems like it would be easy to switch things around in the app, so I don't know why they didn't.
Finally home. Spent the past few hours sitting in my car thinking about the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The Good - F*cking TELEVISION!! A dream come true and it was everything I ever wanted. - The Tennessee Theater. Holy cow, that place is gorgeous. - The hospitality of abrakapokus & Dave Maynar. You couldn't ever meet more warm and inviting hosts. - Seeing old friends and making new ones. Y'all are some of the best people in the world <3 - Random porto's littering the street of Knoxville.
The Bad - I'll echo the scheduling difficulties. I understand that these things happen, but it felt like nothing at the Bijou ran on time. It was multiplied by trying to figure out what had the right time on it (the app or the paper). - Keiji Haino at 2:30 in the afternoon. Oof. Nothing could have mentally prepared me for that.
The Ugly - That walk from KAM to the Pilot Light hurt me. It may have been the super secret way Dave took me though.
An amazing time was had. If Big Ears is back, I'll be there.

^^that's what I'm talking about! And what I haven't been able to shut up about for the past five months. There's a reason they topped a quackin' Beatle on my best shows of 2013 list. They still put on such an incredible show, and Jimmy Rip has filled some very big shoes with a boatload of style.

Top 5 1. Dawn of Midi - one of those rare shows in which you are thankful that it was just like listening to the album 2. "Music for 18 Musicians" - By the time it was happening, I found myself underwhelmed by the Sunday night Reich performances. I was starting to snooze during "Radio Rewrite". But when this started, everything clicked. It was simply resplendent to witness. 3. Television - I was only able to stay for the first two songs, but even those two proved something. 4. Susanna - Her originals translated very well, and guitarist Helge Sten was featured prominently to great effect. 5. Marc Ribot's original score to "The Kid" - While the score wasn't anything revelatory, it was a serviceable support to a classic film. Beyond that, I appreciated what the presence of such a performance signified about the quality of this festival.
Biggest surprise John Cale - As someone who barely knew his music beyond The Velvet Underground & Nico, he knocked it out of the park. Great backing band.
Biggest letdown Oneohtrix Point Never - I'll admit that it could simply be a matter of taste. But your taste is wrong. Live is less interesting than on record. And those amorphous CGI visuals were utterly banal they they subtracted from the show rather than adding to it.
I really can't think of much to criticize. Great city, excellent venues, most of the shows had an ideal crowd size. Attendees were respectful and friendly, and serious about the music. It seemed pretty well-run, with few hiccups. Probably my only complaint would be the decision to have reserve seating for the Sunday night Reich show. Or specifically, to give out the tickets at the point of check-in. That put people like me, who couldn't get there early, at a disadvantage. If they choose to do assigned seating for any show in the future, I think they should set it up as a separate, online check-in. But I'm being picky.
I agree with most of what has already been posted. It was good to meet everyone. All the venues were nice and except for KMA really close. I was surprised by the crowds. Everything seemed well attended.
1: Wordless Music Orchestra with Jonny Greenwood. This was my show of the weekend. I thought Wordless was better than the group they used to play Reich on Sunday night. When they played Loop with Jonny I had a huge grin on face the whole time.
2: Dawn of Midi: This has already been mentioned, but it was really good.
3: Nils Frahm's show was another that just connected with me.
A couple notes:
The Charlie Chaplin movie "The Kid" with live soundtrack by Marc Ribot went over well at Big Ears. I was told that there will be a repeat performance of this at Bonnaroo.
I saw on twitter they were dropping hints about there being a Big Ears 2015. If they do another composer in residence, I want John Adams.
Glad this turned out awesome, hope the success of this festival will help bring in bigger composers like Clint Mansell or Morricone. Hope to come for my birthday next year
I mean he's already doing a Superjam at Bonnaroo, maybe Skrillex could be the 2015 resident composer?
One can only hope.
I was always surprised we never got Skrillex'd at Moog/MOEMS.
I personally feel like this year was a huge success. I don't think they need to pull out big names for the kids. This was my first time though, so I don't really know what success is in AC's eyes.
