Did anybody that saw Jim James at the fest see his solo set at Bonnaroo as well? Just wondering how it compared.
Newport was the 4th Jim James set I have seen. In my opinion, it was by far the best. Honestly, the Bonnaroo set seemed to leave me wanting more; it was solid, but not great, and the crowd just didn't seem that into it. His Newport set had much better solo's and jams than the other shows I have been to, and after seeing the show several times at different venues, that is what sets it apart for me, what he/they do on the spot that is not on the recorded album. He also busted out some new dance moves on stage Jim just seemed to have a lot more fun at NFF, and I think that really showed and improved the experience. Milder weather could have been a factor too, but the energy was just ridiculous. Newport was also the first of his shows that I have been on the rail (rather, picket fence) so I am sure that made it more enjoyable. Even for Roo I ended up really close, but that was because folks kept leaving after every song (nice to get closer, but sucks to see so many folks bail mid-set that were closer). I don't think there is any question that the Newport set was above and beyond what we got at Roo.

One of my favorite parts of Jim's set was when he put one foot up on a speaker and just kinda stood in place, like a statue looking out into the crowd. He proceeded to do nothing while his band jammed.....he just stood still with a smile on his face. After a few seconds cheering began and it got louder and louder and people were going nuts - for a guy who just stood still and did nothing. His band was cracking up over it and I was laughing myself at how he controlled/created a response by doing nothing and standing still.
