Admittely MMJ is a band Ive tried numerous times to get into and failed. But I thoroughly enjoyed the solo album from start to finish. Excited to see this performed live.
I'm in the same boat though have never put much effort into listening to them. This solo album has me wanting to go back and try MMJ again. That Fallon performance was also great. I loved how everything unfolded to get bigger and grander as the song went on. It has me sold on seeing him at Roo but I really need to learn some MMJ stuff now.
Be careful what you seek... MMJ can easily become an obsession, making all other bands seem like posers. If possible, see them perform live first. They are one of the few bands that I can honestly say need no prep work familiarizing yourself with their music.
Since they are not touring right now, I suggest checking out Okonokos. The entire show is available on youtube at:
The audio version of the show is great too, with a few extra tracks included. Once you are hooked, start checking out their albums. They are all very good, although I must admit it took me a while to get into "The Tennessee Fire" and "At Dawn". I love them now, but suggest starting elsewhere.
Once the addiction kicks in you'll be jonesing for some fresh stuff. Although I never followed the Grateful Dead or Phish, I find myself seeking out bootlegs from MMJ in the same way Dead and Phish fans swapped tapes. They are pretty jammy live, and they tour a deep catalog with a bunch of covers, so every performance is pretty unique. I suggest listening to the following classic sets:
You can get all the live MMJ you desire and most of it is mixed really well. There are also lots of other lives shows from other bands, past and present. You can even find some old solo shows of Jim and Carl.
I just came in from seeing Jim James play from his new album!!! My radio station (91.9 fpk) hosted a members only concert today at 5:00 with Jim and his band. There were 63 of us in the room including the band. I'll post video when I figure out how, but we are in for a treat!!! I'm so blown away I can hardly function...that, or all the wine I just had Happy Valentine's Day!!! I'm definitely feeling some love <3

Amazing. Just a wonderful show.
Setlist was the entire album (which is killer live) in order and the encore was a handful of Jacket tunes.
Questlove was there the whole show. Watching from the side of the stage with a lady friend.
Two Tone Tommy came out for some bass action during the encore.
Encore MMJ songs: Wonderful Wordless Chorus Beats 4 U Touch Me pt. 2 Victory Dance
There was some amazing breakdowns of the songs from the solo album. One part had an amazing drum part that featured three of Jim's band members wailing away on different sets of drums. Just awesome all around.
For a small show the light setup was pretty nifty as well.
I've got a handful of great videos. Only have energy to let one upload now. Will upload more tomorrow after work.
Nice crotch shot at 0:50 there ITM. I did pause to post this. I will now resume. Thanks btw. As a stranger to MMJ and Jim James, this helps me a great deal!

Haha, he was so close that he was making eye contact with us and I couldn't watch the show through my camera screen. Usually if I record a video at a show I try to just keep it steady under my eye-level so I can watch the show and tape at the same time. The downside of this is crotch shots. Maybe the ladies will like it

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I judge most artists I'm unfamiliar with based on bulge size. I'm not about to start listening to new music if I know the dude isn't packin. And I mean this in a completely non homosexual way. Not that there's any thing wrong with that
Edit: and with that, it's off to the drunken rambling thread I go.

If anyone's looking to get into MMJ, I'd recommend starting with Evil Urges and Circuital.
It Still Moves and Z are also great, but my opinion is to start with the two above.
"So with Calexico and Jim James both playing Bonnaroo what are the chances we get a "Going to Acapulco". I could die happy after seeing that"
Calexico "Hey great idea, I will check with Jim and see if he is up for it or some collaboration of sorts. Thank you so much and look forward to seeing you all there"
Just the fact that it's a possibility has me giddy
