Saw him Saturday at Union Transfer. Good show, but left me wanting and I'm not sure what. New songs sounded straight off the album...which is great...but I guess not what I went to hear. He did an awesome rendition of Bermuda Highway that was probably the highlight for me. Too many Jim electric guitar solos, the improv to about every third song was a Jim guitar solo. He is a great musician with a magical voice, but he can stay off the guitar solos. I think Jim is at his best with an acoustic guitar and mic.
Definitely worth checking out...and now I can check out someone else that I'm sure he'll be in conflict with on the farm.

Just thought I would throw a few pics from his Orange Peel Show last night. Thanks for the heads up on that one guys. One of the best sets I have seen in awhile.

The one thing that bothered me about his set was that his first sax solo was clearly mimed. There was not a mic even near him, yet it was coming through the speakers. Just a little disappointing. Fabulous set otherwise.

I've questioned if that was really him playing the sax when I've seen him do this show live. I was always too busy dancing to look for a mic.

Yeah I know it wasn't on the first one. After that he was mic'd but his fingers might not have been matching what was playing. I don't know though, I'm a guitar/bass player and I could tell for sure had it been on guitar, just not familiar enough with sax mechanics to say for sure on the later solos.
I've never been a big fan of mmj, just haven't listened to them much. I've always kinda like them, though. But after seein jim for the first time in the superjam I realy gained a lot of respect. I just don't understand why you would fake playing the sax.
And you're right, it does look kinda fake now that you point it out. At first, I thought he must have had a remote mic or something on the sax, but I don't know how (or if) that even works.
Still, a phenomenal set and had a blast dancing on the left side.
Edit: Geez, they won't let me link to anything. just go to ustream and find the archived video.

Yeah I've seen him take legitimate sax solos, but the first one of his set was almost certainly fake. He wasnt playing into a stand mic and he didn't have a clip-on mic.

Yeah, the "Solo" on Know Til Now was definitely fake during the show at the Newport in Columbus. But I thought it was pretty obvious that it was. I doubt Jim was trying to fool anyone with that, and why would he need to? He threw out about three blistering actual sax solos that show. I think it's more of "Jim thinks it's cool to dance with the sax at that time" than "Jim trying to make people think he's playing the sax."

I downloaded these from my Facebook and then uploaded them to imgur, so they've been hit pretty hard by compression. But here are my pictures from the show:

First sax solo was definitely fake. The girl I was standing next to and I were laughing about it the whole time. He didn't even move his fingers for most of it.
But it's obvious that half of what JJ does on stage is to entertain himself.
That doesn't bother me since it entertains the shit out of me too.
