I've shared my pit entrance technique before, so I will not re-hash... But if you are smart about it, even if you don't get into the pit immediately -- you still can see the show from pretty damn close (just pitched slightly to the left or the right). Use your brains folk -- and don't bother for the main stage acts for HL'rs unless it's an obsession; then do what you must.
^^^ this. Radiohead was mine last year. I was 100% ok missing FTP, Feist, St Vincent, Luda ect... Rod and Gab were incredible and made up for it. This year may not be the case. Björk maybe, but I doubt it. Schedule will be the deciding factor. Beware the beesZ
I always feel tons of tension and stress from people trying to cut, and jump in, and whether I'm doing the same, etc. I just avoid the pit sections during the headlines. Not worth missing acts and stressing over other peoples' actions and policing the area. This is my vacation, and I deal with enough shizz from the office where people are always watching and talking about everyone's intentions and actions, that I refuse to deal with it at Roo. Just my .02

The last line in your post is how I will be for Macca. The literal obsession part. Not ashamed to admit it.
Everyone else will be watched from as decent a spot as possible.
I scanned through and didn't see this answered: How soon before the show do they usually open up the pit and let people in?
Just from memory of last year it was pretty much RIGHT before the show...like I saw a bunch of people in the line for Foster the People and they were stressing because the line was suuuuuper long and they were stressed they weren't gonna get in after waiting so long.
So on the same topic. We have the Pit line forming MANY acts before it starts. How many acts do you have to be at a stage to get ahead of the sound stage in a different view without being a d.ouche to everyone do people think? What if you are in pit line and pit fills up and you find out right when the act starts? Does that mean you are at the back of What? I've been to a billion concerts but never a festival of this magnitude. Thanks for any further guidance from Vets

@nthingtolose I was literally the 2nd to next person in line for the Chili Peppers pit when they closed it off. I was so mad and nobody dispersed leaving me stuck between a metal gate and a lean of 200 people on my back (not where I wanted to be for one of my favorite bands ever...[with john]). I advised the one soul in front of me to jump the fence so we can at least crash the stage and get some sort of view. He wouldnt give up hope of that pit opening for one more person and I ws getting sandwiched beyond comfort. I squeezed out of the mess, jumped the fence, and got a really good spot on the side of the stage just couldnt see Chad at all. The right side is always a mess...

I'm not sure how it works with the pit line forming, like I think you have to leave the pit once a show is done...so for example if you want to see "Band B" and you get in line for "Band A", you can't just stay in the pit for "Band B" after "Band A"'s set is done...I'm no expert on this pit stuff so someone else probably has better answers than me...but even if you were to somehow not get in the pit (it fits more people than you think) then you would be able to go to the back and work your way back into the normal crowd.
I had a pretty good experience last year with getting good spots for the shows I wanted to see. If its a tent just get there one show early, and during that show just watch the crowd for any room you can get closer. Then when the show is over you will be able to weave and bob with a lot of the crowd leaving. If it is headliner then you will want go there two or three shows early.

If the pit fills up, and you don't get in, doesn't mean you'll be at the back of What. Just means you'll need to work your way through the crowd to a good spot. Sure, there are tens of thousands of others already there- but the What stage field is quacking huge.... I guarantee that any show (maybe not Macca) you'll be able to work your way at least halfway up, even AFTER it begins. And even if you don't, just make a friend in the back-field and dance the night away! Roll with it homey!
Tis will be my first time do the pit at what and for a headliner to boot, which side is the best side to go to when they open what field? Left or right looking AT the stage not FROM the stage (right would be toward which, left away form the rest of centeroo). I am going straight to the pit line as soon as they open the gates. I really like both passion pit and wilco so I know what I'm in for. I think I can have a great Friday at bonnaroo and get in the McCartney pit at the same time so why not. Heck I can leaveethe pit early and hear the encore while working toward zz top.
any info from vets on pit positioning (how re the sound and sight lines) and pit protocol (saving spots for people in line to use the bathroom see end show get food or drink) would be greatly appreciated. I mean really how many people are going all in all day anyways. I know I am!

If I was to do this plan I definitely would never do this part of the plan.. Sit all day literally to leave early is well.. Crazy. I'd watch Sir Paul close it if I was front of the pit.

I know! Just a little early not real early, like second encore early I would still hear it real well and it would take time to navigate the crowd. Just an idea at this point not a plan. Right now I can say that but in the moment probably not,
(1) Damon Albarn (2) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (3) King Khan & His Shrines (4) Ty Segall (5) Ms Lauryn Hill (6) Darkside (7) Kanye (8) Janelle Monae (9) Goat (10) Meshuggah.
I'd really like to get right behind the pit, on the back-of-the-pit rail, but not actually *in* the pit. Is that weird?
Thats how I experienced Foster the People last year, to me it was kind of perfect because you're far enough away to get good sound quality, close enough to get a good view, and have a comfy rail to lean up on.

Not weird at all. I did that for Robert Plant in 2011 and thats my plan for McCartney and Petty this year. Was able to get some really great photos of Plant from their.

Did you have to get there early to get that spot, or is it pretty easy to make your way up there?

From my experience of my first year last year I was really surprised just how friggin enormous the crowds are, you have to get there suuuuuuuuper early if you want to get close...however you can still make it fun and dance and have a grand ol' time even if you're in the back.....I think luckily we got that Foster the People Spot by getting their only one band early.
Do people generally get annoyed if you have someone hold your spot while you go catch a set?
I'd like to go see Foals, but I'd understand if people would get angry, I'd be pissed if someone held someone else's spot from like 1:00-8:45 and some guy just walks up in front of me saying that the dude in front of me was holding his spot.
Obviously one set and almost 8 hours is a huge difference but, you know.

If your in the back of the What field when the act prior to the one you want to get up front for ends, you can usually make your way up front. When one act ends, many people leave to go to a different stage or use the portos or get a beer etc. I do have some concerns if this will be a good enough strategy for McCartney though. I think there could be a lot of up front people that stay their when Wilco ends. Good luck to ya.
