1. Generally how early do people get in line for regular shows? What about headliners? 2. Can you leave for any reason like bathroom/food/water or are you just stuck? 3. Is there a halfway decent view of the other shows going on while you're waiting in line?

other than what stage pit there are no lines. people just tend to camp out the tent or stage if there is a band you really want to see you might have to sit through the show playing before them and slowly work your way towards the front. but you can usually get a pretty good view no matter where you are.

Headliners play on the what stage btw and people will sit in line all day sometimes just to see them. but like i said you don't need to be in the pit for 'what' to get a good view of the band playing.

It really depends on the act that you wanna see. Like previously stated, if you wanna get close at a tent, get there AT LEAST one show earlier if not two. I usually get on the rail when a tent opens if it is someone I wanna see within the 1st 3 acts.
As far as the stages go, some people camp out all day if they wanna get close to the headliner (Radiohead last year had a ton of people waiting.) There truly is no bad seat if you get from the sound-stage in on the main stages.

I've seen a bunch of headliners/sub-headliners from the Pit--Jay-Z, Radiohead (2012), Bruce Springsteen, and Arcade Fire. I recommend getting there somewhere after 3 PM. I normally bring a blanket and sit on the line. Bathroom, food, anything you really want, breaks are totally cool up until about 1 hour before the set is to start. With 1 hour to go, it gets a little tense and pushy as people are afraid of cutters and such. I like stage right for my pit waiting, and if there chill bands pre-headliner (like Wilco, Avett Brothers), it is nice to sit and watch--you actually have a great view of the stage.
Sounds ok waiting in the pit line, I just don't want to miss too much on Friday either. I saw phish and beasties from the back and it was way chill sound was great. I used to fight my way up front but now I may just chill in the back stretch out and enjoy the music. I want to catch Calexico for sure and McLaughlin if possible. Nobody ever comes down to dep south texas for sure. Now if bands were coming through my town left and right that's a different story.
We had the worst experience in the pit line last year. We got their 2 hrs early to get in the pit for The Avett Brothers and were about 25 in line. The Radiohead line was against the wall between the one barrier. The middle section was open which was the way we would go into the pit and our line started at the entrance and ran back along the barrier towards the stage. About 30 min or so before people started forming another line going straight out from the entrance to pit and despite being told no one would get in the correct line of course. Security didn't do shit so when they let us in there was this crazy rush where the two lines both merged and were pressing in. So where we probably would have been on the rail or 2nd row we were now 7 people/rows deep. I was beyond pissed.
Not sure I'll be attempting the pit line anytime soon again.

See...these are the stories I don't like reading. I feel like I need order in my life (which I know goes AGAINST the 'Roo vibe). But, if I'm waiting that long for someone I reallllly want to see, I don't want people in front of me who waited 20 minutes. But, I guess that's the risk you take..

You know, in all the years I went to Bonnaroo, I only once ever tried to get into the pit and that was for the depressingly under-attended Jimmy Cliff show in 2010. I always was satisfied by being either off to stage right and slightly back or somewhere in the middle of the field in front of the soundboard. The stage is so tall that I barely find the worth of getting so close up to the stage.
We normally don't care about the pit either but the Avetts are seriously my all time favorite so getting in there really was a must for me. It's just a shame that it went down the way it did.

For some reason I thought this thread was talking about What Stage (I usually read through posts, but I just assumed this was about What right when I clicked)... haven't been since 2010, so I don't know. But, I was on the rail by the end of NIN, and the year before I was at the very front for Orchestra Baobab. That stage is/was a decent height and you did get a great view if you were up front. So, yeah, it is worth getting close to the Which Stage, you have pretty crappy vantage from many spots of that area. Love those bleachers though, especially for late night.

My group walked into the pit at Avetts Brothers last year after the pit line had gone in and there was still a ton of room. We were on the Centeroo side of the stage, it didn't fill up behind us until they started playing.
I can see getting into the pit last minute but not getting a "good" spot. What's your definition of "good" - front of pit? Halfway back? Do you consider anything in the pit good? I mean technically it's better than not being in the pit but I wouldn't say that us being 7 rows back was a "good spot". Not what we were going for. Like I said we were there 2 hrs early and were about #20-25 in line and when they let us in and the other people started cutting in line we were 7 rows/people deep. People kept poring in for a while. So even if you got in last minute you had to be towards the back and if you were closer then you worked your way up.
Just sucks that you give up time to wait to see your favorite group and people are jerks and have no respect for others and just push their way in.
Yeah, 7 people back from the rail is really an awful place to be. If your not up on stage with the band, your really not experiencing the show at all IMO
And for the record in our 2 Roos that's the ONLY time we ever made an attempt to get into the pit. So yeah, we don't need the pit for a good experience. I just wanted to experience rail this one time for my favorite band at Roo. Sorry if that's a bad thing.

When I got in line for radiohead, there were probably 200-300 people ahead of me. And there was a much crazier rush before they opened the gate for radiohead than it was for the Avetts. I got in and was about 7 rows back. I guess I'm confused as to how you ended up so far back. Even if you were 50th in line, your gonna be extremely close to the rail. It's best to keep expectations very low I guess, lessons learned all around
I think the problem was we were lined up against the rail running towards the stage so we had to make that sharp right turn to go down the path to the stage. All the people that just came up last minute had much easier access than us and it really bottlenecked when the original line was trying to turn into the masses rushing in straight on. We definitely weren't even close to being like the 50th in there.
