I'd really like to get right behind the pit, on the back-of-the-pit rail, but not actually *in* the pit. Is that weird?
Not weird at all. I did that for Robert Plant in 2011 and thats my plan for McCartney and Petty this year. Was able to get some really great photos of Plant from their.
My plan as well. I plan on getting to the what field towards the middle of passion pit and staying until McCartney gets off stage!

Is it still fairly difficult to get into the Pit for the Sunday headliner and pre-headliner, even with less people still being on the farm? The National is my favorite current band, and I'm hoping to get into the pit for their set, but wouldn't be getting in line until about half hour before their set time (going to leave Edward Sharpe early to get into The National pit line). I'm wondering if I should be getting to the pit line earlier.
I'm also debating whether to go catch the last 45 minutes or so of David Byrne & St. Vincent, or stick around the What and try and get into the pit for Petty.
I'm also wondering about the What pit situation on Sunday. It seems much less crowded everywhere on Sunday, but I've never even thought about attempting to get close for a Sunday headliner. I am thinking it won't be too difficult, but maybe I'm wrong? Anyone with Sunday pit experience care to chime in?
I got in the pit at the very end of Phish's set last year, it was a big muddy party! I just walked right in, though since it was during the encore, it's likely that my experience isn't representative of the rest of the set.
i strolled right into the pit for beach boys last years. about a half hour before their set, which suprised me. also fogerty in '10 no problem. i'll probably attempt for all the headliners and nas this year, but i never really have my hopes up too high.
i was planning on going to the macca pit line right before wilco.. almost 3 hours before his set. would that be early enough?
I'm probably going to camp behind the pit line, at least by 1 pm for McCartney. He is just one of a couple of shows I really care about having a good view of. Everything else, I'll see what's available wheni get there.
I'm going with 3 other folks though, so we will rotate who has to stay and watch camp.
so will it be impossible to get pit for both grizzly bear and the xx since they are back to back?
I don't think it would be because last year I saw some people who would get in the pit line literally as the show was starting, or once the pit line all got in they would jump in if there was still room in the pit...I suppose you would just have to get lucky for this to work.
Part of me would love to wait to get into the Pit for Macca, the other part figures just being there with friends will be enough for me. I'd much rather be surrounded by good friends and enjoy the fest to the fullest instead of being close to Macca.
Then again this is McCartney we're talking about.....I can make new friends....

Yeah, definitely not worth it. Nobody bother messing with the pit line. It's a hassle and not that cool and you can have more fun setting up where you can see the stage.
I'm all about the pit in every other circumstance, but for Paul, I just can't see myself putting up with the inevitable struggle. Waiting all day to get a great spot is great in theory, but for me, it does nothing but raise the possibility of being disappointed. You become so concerned with a "spot" that you forget to have fun and you end up losing focus of what we're all there to do: enjoy the show!
I am torn! I have gone from one extreme to another (no way to absolutely) and now have no idea what I will do!
Really am going to see both passion pit and wilco leading up to the show but the hour breaks are killer. I can imagine I won't decide what I will do until Friday morning during brunch! Probably going to do the pit thing friday, I got real close for both Dylan and the dead in 04 I don't remember them having the pit that year but I don't remember much from 04!
When did they introduce the pit anyways? Does any one remember?

How early would I have to arrive to get an up close spot to see Paul McCartney? I never bothered waiting in the pit line last year tor my first 'Roo. Where do I go to find it? Paul and The Beatles pretty much helped to form my love of music. Thanks so much for your help.

This is Paul McCartney we're talking about! I plan on checking it out at least before I get started on Friday morning/early afternoon as soon as what stage opens. It certainly cannot hurt to see how it looks. If it looks like a lot of people are going to get in line I may just decide to wait right then. Maybe I just grab a spot right behind the pit wall next to the sound booth. I am really torn it sure does seem like a big commitment, especially if people are lining up early in the day like i expect, waiting from 12-1230 to nine and then through the show till 1130-12 for macca! That potentially 12 hours. But how many opportunities will you get to see macca up close and personal.
And the guy who says you put so much energy into getting a good spot that you don't enjoy the shows has a point. What if it gets rough around passion pit or wilco when people start crashing the pit line? I wonder how well security will keep the lines in order. Or if they will at all. I could definitely see it turning into a miserable experience too.
If there is a line to get into the what stage as soon as centeroo opens (this would not surprise me at all) you know there will be a long line. I also think that by the time passion pit goes on at 430 it will be hopeless and that if you are willing to get there at 2-230 to try and get a spot you're probably willing to get there at 12-1230 to pretty much guarantee it!

All I know is that I waited around 6 and a half to 7 hours for Radiohead last year, and when Rodrigo y Gabriela came on, it was hell. Solid 2-3 hours of not being able to move just jam packed with the people around you. I was on the right hand pit line, and a ton of people hopped the fence/pushed in when they opened the gate and I ended up probably in the last 10-15% of people who got in to the pit due to all the pushing. For Macca, if you're not inside that first fence, I think it will be a complete crap shoot as to whether or not you get in due to all of the pushing. I am thrilled to see him, but unless the pit lines are far shorter than expected, I'm not even going to try. I would have to miss way too much for the chance of getting in. So it just is not worth it for me.
Since I really want to see FOALS, it'll be interesting to see how close I get for Macca. 2 and a half hours should get you pretty close for most people at main stage (I got Pit for Chili Peppers waiting about that long), but I feel like Macca is going to be an entirely different beast. I would imagine it will be far worse than Radiohead last year, and 6-7 hours was barely enough and I thought someone was going to get trampled when they opened the gate.
However, sitting down for 12 hours waiting for Macca should leave you a lot of energy for late night/the rest of the festival.
I just got an e-mail from AC saying this year the pit line will be at the fountain 30min before each show where they will hand you a ticket (like they already do for the comedy tent) which will allow you to walk right into the pit. Pretty neat way to avoid the rush into the pit and the mob of people trying to hold together some sort of line.
oh... and this
