I'm surprised more hasn't been made in this thread of the shows in St. Paul and Clarkston. For those who haven't already read about it, Dylan acknowledged his Minnesota upbringing and commented how since his North Country days, he's shared the stage with "everyone from Mick Jagger to Madonna" but how the greatest ever was Bobby Vee, a Fargo-native musician with whom Dylan performed in his first-ever paying gig.
Vee was in attendance for the show in St. Paul, and Dylan paid him tribute by playing one of Vee's hits, "Suzie Baby," with some vocals that hint that the wolfman grit really is mostly a put-on...
Then in Clarkston, Bob covered the Richard Thompson tune, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," apparently a setlist inclusion that was even a surprise to the band. I wonder if/doubt it's a coincidence that he covered that motorpsycho tune just days before today's Self Portrait Bootleg Series announcement.

Man this St. Paul show from last night seems like it might have been the best one yet. Wilco and MMJ doing Cinnamon Girl again, MMJ bringing out MN boys Trampled By Turtles for songs by both bands as well as an old Buddy Miller cover, and of course MN boy, Dylan. From The Current:
Dylan was in a particularly nostalgic mood on Wednesday evening, perhaps with the experience of playing his birthplace of Duluth still lingering in his mind from the night before. After dancing through a set that included many staples from recent stops on his Never Ending and AmericanaramA tours, the 72-year-old Dylan paused in a rare moment of reflection to offer a sweet tribute to an early musical role model.
“I used to live here, and then I left,” Dylan began, causing die-hard fans to stand up straight and take notice (he usually only offers up a simple “Thank you, friends!” at shows). “I’ve played with everybody from Mick Jagger to Madonna, but the most beautiful person I’ve ever been on stage with is Bobby Vee. He used to sing a song called ‘Suzie Baby.’”
He continued by telling the crowd that Vee was in attendance that night and that he wanted to dedicate a cover of “Suzie Baby” to the Fargo-born star, who was one of the first musicians to ever hire Dylan to perform while he was still living in Hibbing. In a twist of fate, Vee actually hired Dylan to play piano in his band back when Dylan was using the stage name Elston Gunn, so it was quite fitting that he chose to cover the song in an era of his career that has found him returning to the piano instead of playing the guitar.
Vee retired from performing just last year after revealing to his fans that he has Alzheimer’s disease, making the tender moment from the typically stoic Dylan all the more bittersweet. Dylan and his band’s jaunty cover of the 1959 ballad was a highlight of the set, and one of the only moments they deviated from the cabaret shuffle that defined the majority of their performance.
Other highlights of Dylan’s set included the devious “Lovesick,” which featured a wailing harmonica solo from the sprightly singer, a boogieing “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’,” and a reimagined version of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” that included one of his more imaginative piano solos. As with many shows he’s played in town in recent years, he seemed to save his best voice for the celebratory “Blowin’ in the Wind,” which served as his encore.

I was at the Toronto show last night and it was as I expected it to be...
MMJ killed it despite a smaller crowd and delivered one of the better setlists of the tour IMO
Wilco was solid. I've seen them perform better shows but it was great to see them pull Feist out, the extended Jam they did with Richard Thompson was killer, and you can't argue with a Wilco/MMJ, Cinnamon Girl cover
Dylan was terrible. I figured he would be bad after reading other reviews, but he was down right atrocious. His voice was a mess, just beyond brutal. If it weren't for the 2 openers I would have been pissed to have paid for that show.
The weather and the crowd were awesome, couldn't have asked for a better evening.

Bridgeport venue changed from Ballpark to Webster Bank Arena. Kinda sucks since I wanted to be outside but whatever still gonna be awesome. Gonna get their early to get a floor wristband

The arena actually holds about 2000 more people. I've been a couple times for AHL games. It's a pretty nice place. I was looking forward to my 2nd Dylan minor league baseball stadium show too though :/ I'm guessing the change of venue was due to rain?

Yeah rained damaged the outfield grass and they don't want people coming in and ruining it. Fair enough, I don't have work Friday so I'll get to WBA whenever I'd like. I'm not anticipating the show to be that crowded though.
Aside from quoting a news piece, your entire commentary consisted of "of course MN boy, Dylan." Are you really not sure what more could have been said about Bob Dylan paying tribute to the man who first invited him onstage; the man who first inspired Dylan to change his name, albeit to the short-lived Elston Gunn; The man who Dylan said he was most honored to share the stage with ever?
"of course MN boy, Dylan." Yeah, I guess that pretty well sums it up.

Well I wasn't there and I thought the piece was cool and then you act like we are supposed to come here and post some kind of essay. I wasn't sure if you saw it when you posted so I reposted it in case you missed it. Sorry for that. You're the best ever.
Really upset about missing this tour. I had a cynical idea when this was announced that it'd just be short set, short set, short set, done but these shows are extremely unique for all bands. Seeing the setlist is painful because each night is a "wow that would be awesome to see" and it's different all the time.
Scrounge up a ticket for Bridgeport! Kev and I have a hotel and everything for maximum cuddle time.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I have an extra 3-day XPN fest pass at member price of $90 if you can swing Philly for the show (includes lawn for Americanarama)

I'll be at Newport Folk Festival but
When the tour dates came out I knew I wouldn't be able to do any of the nearby shows. The CT show is during a wedding and the NY/Philly shows are during Newport.

Looks like that's why they moved it in order to sell more tickets. Via the email:
"The decision to move the concert venue was 100% the promoters decision. The Bridgeport Bluefish organization had no say in the decision. The venue change was one of three outdoor facilities that were moved indoors on the tour. We apologize for those of you that were looking forward to a great outdoor Americanarama event at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Bluefish were ready and able to host the event."
from a interview with Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) We're not as invulnerable to audience response as we'd like to think we are. I think there are actually some artists that enjoy getting beer cans thrown at their heads.
Bob Dylan clearly doesn't give a shit. Yeah, Bob Dylan. And I've been to Bob Dylan shows where I essentially walked out in the middle. I just didn't like it. Usually there's a good reason why those songs shouldn't be done.
Yeah, Dylan's voice isn't in the best shape. Dylan's voice is shot. There are certainly times when that doesn't bother me so much depending on the song, and he still comes up with ways of doing tunes that makes that OK, but with him it's more that he does a lot of recent material. He has about a dozen minor-key drone tunes with three chords. I find that very tedious.
Yeah. He's way into that pre-rock & roll blues sound. That doesn't bother me. It really has to do with the individual song. He actually has some songs that are even more boring than some early Appalachian songs. It's amazing that he actually . . . It's songs with 512 verses and no melody. It's more than I can bear, really.
I often wonder what would happen if he went to a doctor to check his throat or if surgery . . . I think a psychiatrist more than a throat doctor would probably be useful at this point.

I have a ton if CDs/albums by both Dylan and Steely Dan. I'm a fan of both. Donald is entitled to his opinion but what is he expecting to accomplish bashing Bob? I've seen Bob dozens of times and ya his voice has changed (a LOT). He even starts his sets these days with Things Have Changed, ha. But I haven't seen Steely Dan/Fagen live because past tours have charged about twice what Dylan charges per show. Donald can take his Steely Dan and shove it up his azz...
well the interviewer asked him and his bandmate the same question, so he was reaching for it. not sure what the reason behind that was?

I'm not sure they were even close to selling out the ballpark though.

I'm just finding excuses cause I wanted to be outside
MMJ is really heating up, I'm about 99% in for Irvine and 75% in for Shoreline. (I can't imagine anyone knows where I can get some face pit or lower 100s for either show?)
At Dawn Wonderful (The Way I Feel) Outta My System Lowdown Lay Low War Begun Just One Thing Heartbreakin Man Victory Dance The Day Is Coming Off the Record Phone Went West
I know this might make some of you want to hunt me down and kill me in my sleep but... If I had to rank the shows from last night it'd be 1. MMJ (obviously) 2. Ryan Bingham 3. Bob Dylan 4. Wilco (although the 3 songs with Lucius were cool)
I was very pleased with Dylan's show and I just think it's hard to go from MMJ to Wilco and not feel the drop in energy. Forgetting who has the biggest name, the order ideally should've been Ryan Bingham, Wilco, Dylan, MMJ just to avoid the huge drop off in energy.
EDIT: The good folks at boblinks.com do NOT agree
Review from CSK: "What a great show
Ryan Bingham wasn't bad
My Morning Jacket is a disgrace - a giant f*** you to them for their ear damaging decibal levels - some people like them, then again, some people like Marmite - went to the lobby to save my hearing
Wilco was truly fantastic, what a great band - some really great versions of songs with some backup singers left over from the Mass MOCA shows - including a Kinks cover, a number of rare songs, and some great solos & jams - truly captured the spirit of the thing
I wasn't terribly impressed with Bob 2013 at Amherst, though many liked it, I frankly wasn't looking forward to a static setlist, but I was very wrong"
Review from John and Cindy Harrity:
What a great show by the Master! Bob's voice was in great shape. The sound mix had his vocals from and center, and they did not falter, fade or get stuck in a two-note range. He sounded great! My wife and I have seen Bob maybe half a dozen times over the past several years -- nothing compared to the road warriors who have been on a never-ending road trip along with Bob and the band. But enough shows to know this was one of the best we have seen. We were excited when Bob came on-stage without his hat, and with his grey head of hair radiating out almost like his younger image from Volume 1 of Greatest Hits. He seemed energetic and ready to roll -- and launched into "Things Have Changed.|" Sounded good. I do not want to do a song-by-song description; there are others with much more expertise than I who can do that analysis. All the songs were well-rendered. "She Belongs to Me" was a stand-out for me, along with "Hard Rain." We were pleased when Jim James and Jeff Tweedy joined Bob on singing "Let Your Light Shine on Me," by Blind Willie Johnson. Some reviews of earlier shows ended with the writer vowing "Never again!" I do not know what the early leg of the tour was like. But last night in B-port, Bob was in high gear and a joy to see. The crowd roared and nobody bailed. Bob gave us as great time. Note on the rest of the show: Ryan Bingham is a great find: we would see him again. Wilco was brilliant -- they can really make some music. My Morning Jacket was good at times but seem to be getting lost in the weeds with sonic tones and feedback. They should put away the hookah and the Radiohead cd's for a while and get back to the music.

Wow I can't believe those MMJ reviews. It wasn't the best MMJ show because they weren't headlining and didn't stretch out their songs as they usually do. But they still sounded immaculate in my opinion.
I had a great time with KevBot and our reviews were similar. MMJ was great as always and I was really feeling Ryan Bingham's set as well. I couldn't stop yawning during Wilco (dodging stones) and Dylan was pretty good. We were on the rail for the first three sets and the first few Dylan songs. Then we stepped back and took a seat (It was completely GA, but gave the first floor wristbands) to give the Dylan fans a chance. Every single person we talked to was there for Dylan. I managed to get three Wilco set lists and we looked around for awhile for Wilco tshirts and such to give them away.. it was hard to find!
