We missed Bob Weir's solo set, but caught the rest. MMJ was fantastic as usual, and seeing them do I Know You Rider with Bob Weir was fun to watch. Never seen them cover the Dead until now! Wilco's first half was meh, but after they did Dark Star > California Stars > Dark Star, their set came alive for me and I really enjoyed the rest of it.
I saw Dylan at my 1st Bonnaroo in '04 and wasn't impressed. I appreciated the importance of seeing a legend onstage, but I was 18 years old & antsy so I went off to another show after a few songs. Last night he was admittedly not the best singer, but he put on an enjoyable show. His band's really good, and he's still a good harmonica player. My wife walked away impressed; my mom disliked the Dylan show, but she's not really much of a fan of him to begin with.
that first paragraph is exactly what I was going to write. traffic made us miss Bob Weir. we got there right as MMJ started. they were great as usual. the song with Bob Weir was great and Phone Went West! we were also meh on the first couple Wilco songs, they were living up to the wilcoma name. but they kicked into gear around the 5th song and it was really good after that. once again the song(s) with Weir were freaking amazing. and that's coming from someone that's neither a Wilco or the Dead fan. I had seen Dylan previously, so I knew what to expect. I had warned my wife that his voice is shot and you can't even tell what song he's playing. when he started singing she burst out laughing. he started the 2nd song and we decided to leave. it's really sad really, the shape his voice is in. I don't see how anyone could enjoy it, but to each their own. his band is good.
Lakewood pit is the best...didn't even break out the etymotics. Sound was glorious. And the pit got pretty empty after MMJ so I had to take full advantage (it was packed pretty tight during Weir and MMJ). They were real d*cks in there about taking pictures so I respected it and didn't take any. Bob Weir americanarama all-stared them sh*ts. I was pretty bored during Wilco until Weir joined them. My god, that was beautiful. I was literally like 30 ft away from Dylan. Whichever cheesed*ck that threw a glowstick and almost hit Dylan needs a butt-paddling.
I can't believe there is so much Dylan hate. He doesn't sound like he used to, you know that, and most importantly Dylan knows that. He doesn't even try to replicate his replicate his classic songs, he rearranges them into some them else entirely to fit his old, gravelly voice with his killer band. My buddy and I were saying that it is one of the only shows we have ever been to where we hoped the performer would not play any songs we knew. If you trust Bob Dylan as an artist and accept how he's doing something different, he puts on a great show.

For me and the times I've seen him it's not about him trying to replicate his old sound. It's more about how it sounded like he was coughing out any vocals he was doing and leaving a lot of blanks in other spots. It literally sounded like every word was a sick person mumbling. I always enjoyed his band but saw a few concerts where just seeing the legend wasn't worth the price I paid. If his vocals were a little better (at least at the shows I saw) then I'm sure I would have had a better time.
I feel bad for the people that are not able to enjoy it. But I think it's a problem with those people, not Bob. I hear American Idol has great vocalists...
If Weir was opening in LA I would of already bought a ticket. Still trying to decide if it's worth it or not. I am very broke at the moment. The MMJ sets look good but at the end of the day they are still pretty short. I'm not a huge Wilco fan and I've seen Dylan quiet a few times.
I'm seeing this tour at the Pops Ampitheatre in Colorado at the end of July. Any chance I can get a friend discount?
That's outstanding. I'm glad they went back to that name. I was a Heinlein geek as a boy (shocker!) and then when it became a character name in Sandman, it was pretty perfect for me. I wish I had some pull there. I also wish I were seeing it there instead of Merriweather Post.
During Weir's solo set, Nels Cline was on stage right watching the whole time. Nels cried after Weir said "I'm gonna do something different now because he hasn't been playing it and he should be" and then broke into Dylan's When I Paint My Masterpiece.
Saw the show last night in West Palm Beach. Everyone was good except for Bob Dylan. Yes I know he's 72 years old but what a boring show.
Right on. I was there also.
Did the Ampitheater seem empty or what ? I think even the lawn was only 25% full.
Very empty. I've been to cruzan over 50 times in the past 10 years and I don't think I've ever seen it that empty on the lawn before. Did you see Roger Waters do Dark Side of the Moon there? I've never seen it that packed. Could barely walk through the lawn.

Nah. I've seen DMB multiple times, Jack Johnson, and Santana. I love the area and ampitheatre but it's several hours from where I live so I can't make it to everything there.
MMJ and Wilco killed it, unfortunately Bob Dylan did not. The emphysema has definitely killed his voice. The rasp works for some songs but it ruins other older songs. I could hardly tell he was singing Tangeled Up In Blue.

Dang sang that's sad. He deserves better than that. You'll probably never get to see him again and you left after two songs after laughing at his deteriorated vocals? That's ice cold dude.
I would have been more sad if we stayed. why would you want to have that as your memory of him? it's awful.
I don't think anybody really stole the show. MMJ were really good, but are much better when they do a headlining set. Wilco would have been tops if their whole set was like their second half. I think Dylan killed it, but there are mixed reviews about that. A lot of people left after a song or two from Dylan. Those that stayed, loved it.
I do not think it is hating on Dylan, I mean laughing at him and leaving yes, but for me his voice sounded like he had a mouth filled with rocks, not hating, just stating the facts. With that said, I know what he has given the music community and I respect that, which is why I stayed for the encore.
No worries We haven't even tried to get rid of them yet (and like I said, I am not even 100% sure that she isn't keeping them). I just figured that if you happened to need Mansfield... I'll still be at Bridgeport, though
Yeah Bridgeport!
Between this and Gathering of the Vibes, I don't think I've ever wanted to be in Brodgeport so much in my entire life I love that the Americanarama show is going to be completely GA. I'll probably be on the diamond for MMJ but in the seats for Dylan.
Popping in here to say I too was in the pit for the Atlanta date and it was definitely one of the most fun shows I've been too in a while. I love MMJ had never been that close for one of their shows so finally getting to be that close was really special. Same goes for Wilco but I was farther back at that point whereas for MMJ I was on the rail.
Personal highlights for all the sets were Playin' In The Band (Bob Weir solo), I Know You Rider (MMJ w/ Bob Weir), One Big Holiday (MMJ encore), Dark > California Stars > Star (Wilco w/ Bob Weir) and One Sunday Morning. I mean really everything was outstanding but those were the first things that came to mind.
And for what it's worth, I really enjoyed what I heard of Dylan's set. His voice didn't bother me until Tangled Up In Blue but that's just because I've listened to that song so many times it'd be weird to hear anyone but Dylan's voice from that time sing it.
Here are links to MMJ and Wilco's sets. I'm sure Dylan and Weir's are on there too but I didnt' search for them.

Wilco has nearly 50 songs in rotation on this tour, and they aren't even playing full headlining sets. That's f*cking crazy. I'm really excited to hear some of the Mermaid Avenue material live. It looks like I might get a couple MMJ songs I've never heard live before, too.
Anyone caught any shows in the current leg with Richard Thompson? The reviews have been saying he's been tearing it up with the 30 minutes he's been given, which doesn't surprise me since he's a stellar performer. I keep hoping they'll book him for Roo.
