Come gather 'round, children, and let me tell you a tale of sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll, and general bacchanalia. Our story begins in March.... actually, back up for a bit. Thar be a prologue to this here story. Allow me to set the scene for ya.
Swingin' Sixties, foggy London town. In an uncharacteristic move, my dad has snuck out of his boarding school after bedtime and taken the train into the city. He pays his laughably cheap admission at a nightclub and makes his way into the crowd. The band take the stage, and all the mods and hippies start rocking out, my father among them. After about 10 or 15 minutes, Dad has a moment of panic when he spots his carpentry teacher nearby in the audience. Understanding that he could get in very deep trouble, he leaves the venue immediately. My dad has regretted that decision frequently over the past 50 years... because the band on stage just so happened to be a little outfit called The Rolling Stones.

Fast forward to about this time last year, and I've just purchased my own ticket to see the boys at Hanging Rock (outside Melbourne). The show was to be the weekend after my 27th, my big blowout celebration - alas, it was not meant to be. The tour is cancelled, but my trip is non-refundable, so I try to make the most of it anyway.
In early November, I fly down again for the rescheduled date, which is also cancelled at the last minute. It's starting to feel as if I'm doomed never to see them, just like my dad before me. Thankfully, I'd had the foresight to pick up a ticket for the following weekend when that date was added - a ticket I very nearly sold off when money was tight, because I'd already be seeing them at Hanging Rock. After being twice bitten, I'm on tenterhooks for the Hunter Valley date the following weekend. It's only after the Sydney show goes off smoothly that I allow myself to slowly get excited again.
My only regret of the day - and it's a big one - is that my cousin couldn't be there with me. I even considered throwing caution to the wind and buying a last-minute scalped ticket for her... and if I'd known my savings account balance, I would have. And I so should have. I’ve been kicking myself over it ever since, and I’ll always regret that part of it. It’s understood that this will almost certainly be the Stones' last tour of Australia; if ever there were a time to embrace the YOLO philosophy, it was then. C'est la vie. But I feel her with me when the bus stops for lunch, and the cafe has a sign about living for the present moment, which is something she's always trying to tell me. I let that be my mantra for the day.
We continue onwards, winding our way through the picturesque Hunter Valley, until arriving at the venue. The coach pulls into the vinyard, and it is stunning. Grapevines to my left, mountains in the distance, all gently sloping down into a natural amphitheatre ahead. I make my way to the front of the lawn, just left of the lighting rig, and find myself a spot between all the picnic blankets and wine buckets.
I don’t know how much I should be revealing here, but oh well, here goes. The drugs are burning a hole in my pocket, but I decide to let the suspense build for just a little bit longer. After 5 minutes, I can no longer resist, and I lick the plastic clean. This creates a very weird and trippy vibe to the night, where everything feels as if it’s happening 5 minutes out of sync. That might sound like I missed the perfect time to take it, but it actually added an extra layer of psychedelia onto the night’s energy, so no regrets. It was like one of those composite photos where the top layer is just slightly out-of-place, creating a blurry and spacey vibe.
British India play first (meh), followed by The Preatures. Something clicks for me during The Preatures in a major way. Here's a band that I love, friends of friends of mine, who formed while attending the same music college I'm attending. In the past 18 months, I'd watched them transform from the little local band that could, into an international pop success - #1 album at home, now opening for the biggest band on the planet - after starting out as a Stones cover band, no less. Could there be a clearer sign? It was almost a cliche unto itself, as was so much about that day... and I mean that in the absolute best way possible. With any other band in the world trying this stuff, you'd just roll your eyes and say "who do you think you are, the Rolling Stones?" It felt that way even more than at Macca or Roger Waters, because it was still the full band. You almost didn't know who to look at on stage. It didn't feel corny that so many people were decked out in Stones swag, because who are we kidding? We've all been looking forward to this for months.
The skies have turned from partly cloudy to grey, and the wind gusts playfully over the hilltops. A storm is literally threatening. There is a definite electricity to the air. The whole setting feels very Tolkien-esque. If I have to compare it to any show I’ve seen before, I would liken it to Plant & Krauss at Bonnaroo ’08 - which coincidentally happened to be my first experience with the type of corn I was enjoying that night. It was a definite throwback. It just felt so big, in a way that I haven’t always quite felt even with other big names like Roger Waters or Macca.
Suddenly, the Stones’ chopper looms over the horizon. It almost feels as if that’s what’s creating the weather; the only other time I can recall really feeling that way was at My Morning Jacket’s 2008 thunderstorm late-night set. It was that level of grandiose. I make my way over to the fence to watch their arrival, just as The Preatures are rushed into ‘Is This How You Feel?’ to close out their set.
The Stones make their way down the dirt road, where they are soon joined by an entourage. Passing behind a truck, they all hide under jackets and blankets and continue onward. As they arrive side-stage, they throw the blankets off… and we’ve been bamboozled! The Stones have snuck backstage as their entourage did the ol’ bait ’n’ switch. It was almost a caricature of itself, because it’s not like we weren’t going to see them in a few minutes anyway. Or 45-60 minutes, because they still had to wait for it to get darker. Like I said, the whole experience was just that over the top - and with any other band, it probably would have just felt annoying and put on.
I've forgone the grapevine in favour of the corn cob, and it's more overwhelming than anticipated. Everything about the experience was larger than life, and this was no exception. Even the form of the party favours (in a sugar cube) was big. Some other fans notice and take a moment to mess with me… all in good fun, though. I have a moment in the grass to meditate, and I start to get a bit emotional. This moment had been a year in the making, and it had almost not happened several times, just as it hadn't for my dad. But it was here now, and everything felt as it should, even though there were people I was missing terribly (I will always regret not splurging and shouting my cousin). Some of my other cousins and cousins-in-law were also going to the Hanging Rock show, until it was cancelled. It almost felt like a duty at that point… at least one person in the family has to see them!
The intro begins, and it perfectly matches the suspenseful, mammoth mood of the night. Immediately they launch into Jumpin’ Jack Flash, and I couldn’t have picked a more perfect song to kick off the night. Just as I’m feeling so emotional, they’re up there singing a song with my name on it, telling me that “it’s all right now… in fact, it’s a gas”. It was exactly what I needed to hear to let go and enjoy the evening to the fullest.
"It’s great to be here, it’s great to play somewhere you’ve never been before. Anyone here from Newcastle? How about Sydney? How about Tazzy? Oh I dunno, I’ve seen the list! …how you doin’ out there, you alright? We've never played in a winery before. I heard some of the best wines in Australia are made here. Is this where you get your goon?” - Mick
He called it goon. Night made.
The whole evening, I had an overwhelming sense that for every time I’d wished I’d been alive for Woodstock, or Monterrey Pop, or London or San Fran in the mid-late ‘60s, or the mid-late ‘70s NYC punk / post-punk / hip-hop scene, that I was experiencing something just as special in its own right. Even my phone has gone out in true rockstar style, with the home button finally falling off early in the night. I’m actually kind of grateful for this, because it encourages me not to spend the whole night watching the show through a screen.
The setlist seems to perfectly match my moods through the night. Just as I’m thinking of my brother, they launch into Paint It Black, the one Stones song he loves. Just as I’m thinking of my cousin, it’s Miss You & You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Just as I’m feeling so overwhelmed at the end of Gimme Shelter (especially as I’ve been trying to cover the song lately… yet another beautiful coincidence), the party pants come back on for Start Me Up. And so on.
It was an interesting contrast when comparing it to Paul McCartney last year. Even though I'm a bigger Beatles fan, I think I have to give the edge to the Stones show. Whereas Paul opts for a marathon setlist and plays the charmer, the Stones pick a tighter selection and make no pretenses about their bad boy side.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was the third time I was supposed to be seeing them, and the first time it had actually happened. After the disappointment of no Hanging Rock show the previous weekend, I tried to stop myself from getting too excited again. But the third time’s a charm, and three is the magic number - and three days before Hope Estate, the Sydney gig goes off smoothly. Then three days later, for only the third time in history, we get to see Keith take the lead on three consecutive songs. That was such a treat; in some ways, I feel his blues gruff has aged a lot better than Mick’s more punk-ish vibe. Not that Mick was bad at all; he sounded almost completely recovered - sometimes a little short of breath, but that also sort of fit his style. I guess you learn some tricks after half a century of touring.
After Keith’s mini-set, they brought out Mick Taylor for Midnight Rambler. I have no idea why they’re bringing Mick Taylor on the whole tour, but only bringing him out for that & Satisfaction. He was by far the best guitarist of the night (at least on a technical level - more soul from Keef), and it’s not like he doesn’t know the other songs. But I suppose I can’t complain too much after a show like that. After Mick leaves the stage, they launch into an insane 5-song run of Miss You > Gimme Shelter > Start Me Up > Sympathy for the Devil > Brown Sugar to close out the set.
Gimme Shelter was an emotional rollercoaster - in part because it’s such a powerful song, but also as I’ve been working on my own cover of it as of late, and they absolutely slaughtered it. Talk about a moment of inspiration. I needed an upbeat number like Start Me Up after that. Then things climaxed with Sympathy for the Devil, with a smooth transition into Brown Sugar. You’d almost think Brown Sugar would feel tacked on at that point, but it most definitely didn’t.
A quick breather, and they’re back on stage with the Sydney Philharmonia for You Can’t Always Get What You Want, followed by (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction with Mick Taylor. Then comes the big pyro finale - which is actually kind of a small pyro finale, because there’s no stadium or anything to launch them from. Kind of a funny juxtaposition after a show of that size. They come back out to take their bows, and the audience goes absolutely mental with applause. My jaw drops to the ground, and moments later, their chopper flies off into the distance. There could be no clearer sign that Elvis has left the building, and no more rockstar way to go about it.
And that, ladles and jellyspoons, is the story of how I saw the greatest concert of my life this weekend.
I figured a night like that is worth commemorating properly, so I just dropped entirely too much money at the frame store yesterday. But I think this will look just smashing on my living room wall once it's done... don't you?
(by the way, how did I not know Karl Denson was the saxophonist for the Stones? I guess when it’s the biggest band in the world, it just eclipses the other names surrounding them.)
I love to read opinions on live music and her what people think of certain bands, especially ones that I may have the chance to see myself. I hope there isnt a thread like this already but oh well, im sure someone will tell me if there is so its cool, win/win.
Can I just throw out that Karl Denson is not the Stone's saxophonist, he MAY have played with them at that show, but he isn't the founding member and has never touring member or a studio member (to my knowledge.) But I know Karl Denson wasn't their original saxophonist at least (and pretty sure he never was.) Either way, The Stones are the group I want to see most in the world and my chances are growing narrow each show (largely due to the astonishing number of cigarettes that Keith smokes each show) and I'm thoroughly jealous and happy for you to have had that amazing experience.
Of course I know he's not a member of the band... but Karl Denson was absolutely there and is a touring member at the moment. From the boys themselves:
“It’s the opportunity of a lifetime, the chance to see the world through a giant pair of lips,” says Denson about his upcoming shows with The Rolling Stones. “It’s going to be amazing to get even closer to this music that I have listened to all my life.”
I didn't actually see Keith smoking a whole lot on stage - but I was also way back on the lawn, and not entirely sober that evening, so maybe he was. The fact that he's made it to 70 is miraculous enough; can't go expecting too much, now.
Thanks for the kind words. I really hope you get your chance!
Bobby Keys from Slaton, Texas is the saxophonist who played on most of The Stone's records, had that great part on Brown Sugar. He also played with Bobby Vee, Buddy Holly, John Lennon, Joe Cocker (Mad Dogs and Englishmen), Harry Nilsson, Warren Zevon and many more. Apparently Mick didn't want him included in the band, but Keef pushed for it and brought him out for some shows without Mick knowing it was going to happen. He also played with them at Glastonbury. Karl Denson is a fine replacement. It be nice to get to see them one day. I doubt I'd ever pay their ticket prices so if they played a U.S. fest that would be perfect for me.
5/Josephine Baker, Theatre des Champs-Elysees, 11/5/25. This show was hot. My first time in Paris and she'd only been doing La Revue Negre for about a month - but I was told this was the first time she'd performed wearing only a feather skirt. Ou la la. Also, her pet snake, Kiki, was on stage with her and it freaked me out a little bit.
Now, I figured they don't call you Pops for nothin'... but really? As Inforoo's token nonagenarian, you must share your exfoliation routine.
4) Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto tour 2012, Atlanta GA, the xyloto wristbands came on and the whole arena went nuts. Coolest use of technology I've seen in a set yet
3) Blink 182 - 2009 Reunion Tour, Birmingham AL. That whole set was amazing because Blink will forever be one of my favorite bands of all time.
2) Chance the Rapper - Bonnaroo 2014 - 2 am set, front row. The energy was unbelievable, contagious, and I've never experienced anything like that before
1) Head and the Heart - Bonnaroo 2014 - Friday early evening set (pit) - One of my current favorite bands. Sun was setting as they played the tail end of their set. Singer pointed the mic towards me and some others to sing part of "Lost in My Mind"
Lets see if I can get to 10. Not in order, but 1 is definitely 1.
1. Catskill Chill 2011-I went for the day on the strength of Umphrey's headlining and Sister Sparrow playing a daytime set. This is where and how I got my start as a concert photographer. About a week before was at a friend's small show at a local club and I met the keyboard player from FiKus-Jon. After discussion he says-bring the camera, even if you aren't trying to shoot music it is a beautiful camp. (most intense car search ever on way in) I bring the camera, take couple shots of The Heavy Pets and ShwizZ-the first 2 acts. I head over towards Sister Sparrow's set. While shooting their sound check the festival's PR guy finds me, asks who I shoot for and asks if I mind sending him shots as they are short photogs. Of course I say yes! Few hours later we run into each other again and he offers me pit access to shoot Umphrey's!! From there he lets me shoot from the VIP viewing area for a few minutes and I end up meeting DJ Jazzy Jeff!. Were it not for this day who knows how many fewer shows and bands I would have seen/discovered in the last few years.
2.Roo 2012 Umphrey's late night set-Help from above #1-last saw/spoke with my friend from #5 at Radiohead saying we would meet up at soundboard for The Word, then Umph. His phone died and we didn't see each other at The Word. After leaving to head to Um I find the tent already packed and run into some other people and hung with them for an hour or so. They went off to some other show (not sure why lol) and I started to wander. Since my friend had a guest pass and I had GA I figured he would be in the VIP area. I head over to see if I can describe him to the security worker there to have them check to see if he is there. When I arrive my friend grabs me as he and some others were on their way back in says he is with us and the guard lets me in. I am convince his wife who passed away 1 week after Catskill Chill 2011 was somehow looking over us and arranged for us to arrive at that random spot at the same exact time. She was also the one who gave me the tickets for my first phish show below. In addition to that the set was unreal!! either best or second best Roo set I've seen (only went to 2) with The Mars Volta 05 the other contender
3. 12/29/97 first Phish show-Got a ticket from a friend. Didn't know much in the way of songs, or band history other then they put on a great live show. I was blown away from the start and it transformed how I rated bands as I stopped caring about albums and started caring about how they played live. It was the first of 56 shows for me and the second best Phish show I've been to.
4. 4/5/98 Phish-favorite concert ever
5. Mountain Jam 2011- We did this as a bachelor party for a good friend. His brother in law manages a few bands so we had the hookup! Stayed in the hotel under Warren's room block, partied like rock stars in hotel lot with grill, and with radio outside the lobby at all hours. Rediscovered Umphreys after not seeing them since Roo 2005. Found out how the other half does it when half of us ended up at a latenight party with members of several bands in attendence. Basically sleeping in a real bed and sitting in a hot tub in the mornings almost ruined the traditional tenting method for me but I started with air mattresses so I can still camp.
6. Help from above #2-Catskill Chill 2013-run into a friend and fellow music writer who tells me randomly as I'm on my way to the set that George Porter Jr. was going to sit in with the McLovins. Were it not for that tidbit I would have shot the first 15 minutes and gone to relax for a bit. As a result I stayed for the set, met George, and Page McConnell of Phish. My friend and I both got to meet Page and George because of that chance statement my friend Karen made about the sit-in. I am also convinced my friend from above sent Karen to tell me so we could meet Page
7. Van Halen 2005 ish-First arena rock concert
8. They Might Be Giants 2007 ish-first small club show (realized these were much more fun for the most part)
9. Phish IT festival 2003 fitst music festival-learned how to spend 16 hours in traffic while having a blast the entire time
My group and I all thought Jungle was better than Outkast. But the crowd at Outkast made for the most enjoyable large gatherings of people I have ever seen. Amazing day.
The energy they brought with Julia was unbelievable. Hands down the best nonfestival day of music I've experienced.
In no particular order after Sir Paul: Paul McCartney - Bonnaroo 2013 Kanye west - American Airlines Arena 2013 Deafheaven - Bonnaroo 2014 Neutral milk hotel - Bonnaroo 2014 Animal Collective - Bonnaroo 2013 Avey Tare DJ set - Grand Central Miami 2014 Gesaffelstein - Coachella 2015 Father John Misty - Coachella 2015 Tame Impala - Bonnaroo 2013 Caribou - Grand Central Miami 2014
Honorable mention to all of iii points music festival. Had me dancing nonstop from start to finish.
I mean, Frank Dux is great and all, but let's not overlook Colorado Rapist's likely completely fictitious list...
I actually don't necessarily doubt this. I feel like a while ago someone on the Coachella board challenged him on something similar, and he posted pictures of his ticket stubs. Like, even though he's a burned out pedophilic piece of dried up dogshit, ol' Ron certainly saw some cool shows. Hetti.
The thing that stands out to me is that Pink Floyd show in Detroit. They opened for The Who that night, yet somehow that fact wasn't worth mentioning and the opening band put on the show of a lifetime.
Ok good I didn't think so either.
BONNAROO 2016!!
I feel like you covered the "shroomed" thing pretty well after the ninth mention.
STS9-Austin City Music Hall, 2014-Self explanatory to begin with, throw in catching a signed drumhead,(never try and catch shit, never really cared to try), but basically fell in my lap so it was pretty cool, only to lose later in cab after a night on 6th, what can ya do. 311/Snoop Dogg-Smirnoff Center, Dallas 2005 Disturbed-Nokia Theater-2004 I think. Front Rail, shroomed, fucking crazy.
is it bad that most of my live music best memories came while under the influence of some sort of something?
Ok good I didn't think so either.
BONNAROO 2016!!
I feel like you covered the "shroomed" thing pretty well after the ninth mention.
I'll play. I've only ever seen about 50 sets, so it's not a particularly large sample, but a statistically significant one nonetheless. I'll check back in after Lolla 2015.
10. Broken Bells - House of Blues, 7/31/14 (Set 14)
WHY DID THEY BOTCH THE BEST PART OF "CONTROL"? WHY?! Rant aside, this was a good show. Docked points for little crowd interaction.
9. Arctic Monkeys - Lollapalooza, 8/1/14 (Set 21)
I liked this showsue me.Sure, Alex was drunk for the encore, but "Knee Socks" into "My Propeller" will be a favorite transition of mine.
8. Bleachers - Vic Theater, 11/15/14 (Set 42)
This was my second Bleachers concert, after their Lolla set was just...not fun to be at. Under a roof Bleachers are a fun show. They're just not a festival band (although the rain at the Lolla set didn't help). And they covered Wilco, which was nice. 7. Jungle - Lollapalooza, 8/2/14 (Set 23)
Pure fun(k). Danced the entire set, which is not something I am prone to doing.
6. The Districts - Lollapalooza, 8/2/14 (Set 22)
Their EP is full of great, Americana rock. Perfect summer release. Their LP ain't bad either. The sound cut twice during this show and you could still hear them. Wish they were plying in Missouri in the near future, but alas.
5. Walk the Moon - Aragon Ballroom, 12/6/14 (Set 47)
I entered this show with near-zero expectations. My friends had raved about this band but I wasn't convinced. But damn this show was good. Definitely look forward to seeing them again.
4. My Morning Jacket - Chicago Theatre, 6/10/15 (Set 51)
Seriously. They put on a flat-out fantastic show. I wish they did the Spontaneous Curation thing more often. This was the show that really "got me" into MMJ.
3. CHVRCHES - Lollapalooza 2014, 8/1/14 (Set 19)
I was front row for this set. It was worth it. And no, I was not the guy in the gorilla suit.
2. Darkside - Lollapalooza 2014, 8/3/14 (Set 38)
I didn't know who Darkside was until about a week before the festival. Then I heard "Paper Trails" for the first time, and my Sunday night plans were made. There was a particular energy about Darkside. They commanded the attention of the crowd in a way that I had never seen before, nor since. Truly memorable.
1. Arcade Fire - United Center, 8/27/14 (Set 41)
This show was amazing. I couldn't have hand-picked a better setlist, the band, the lights, and the setup were all on-point, and there was Mavis Staples covering the Rolling Stones(!). Hearing Win yell "LET'S GO TO CHURCH!" followed by the opening notes of "Intervention" is a moment I will never forget. Hands down the best set I've ever seen.
I submitted a list for this thread a few years ago and still stand by that as my definitive top 10 experiences (view it here: inforoo.com/post/1392577/thread) but I was fooling around this morning and came up with another list of Top 10 dates seeing music.
HM: 06/17/06 Radiohead, Beck, Elvis Costello (My first Bonnaroo) 10: 06/14/13 Paul McCartney, Wilco, Wu-Tang Clan, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, The xx (Paul McCartney headlining Bonnaroo) 9: 06/13/09 Bruce Springsteen, Nine Inch Nails, Elvis Costello, Wilco, Bon Iver, MGMT, Booker T & the DBTS (favorite Bonnaroo lineup year) 8: 10/04/09 Neil Young, Wilco, Ernie Isley (Farm Aid 2009; my first time seeing Neil Young) 7: 07/06/08 Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band (First time to see a Beatle live) 6: 05/20/04 David Bowie (First and only time to see David Bowie) 5: 08/10/08 Bob Dylan, Iggy & the Stooges, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails (V-Fest in Baltimore, my only Dylan festival set & first Stooges) 4: 11/02/02 Bob Dylan (First time seeing Bob Dylan) 3: 04/17/09 Paul McCartney, Morrissey, Leonard Cohen, Franz Ferdinand (First and favorite day of my sole Coachella visit) 2: 10/02/04 Bruce Springsteen, REM, John Fogerty, Bright Eyes (Vote for Change tour. First time seeing all these acts (only time for REM)) 1: 09/24/05 Rolling Stones, Beck (First Stones show and also first time seeing Beck)
Memory is too sketched to remember everything along the way. But I'll try:
1) Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe (with Tony Levin), an evening of Yes music at the Summit in Houston 1989
2) Pink Floyd - Division Bell 1994 Superdome, New Orleans, LA
3) Yes Union (in the round with everyone) 3 hours opening night Pensacola Civic Center 1991.
4) U.K. - Azure Seas Tour show #1 - Caribbean Sea, North America 2013 with John Wetton (RIp), Eddie Jobson, Terry Bozzio and a touring guitarist
5) Tool - Opening Night UNO Arena, New Orleans 2010
6) Pearl Jam - Deluna Fest 2012 Pensacola Beach
7) Lotus - House of Blues February 2015 New Orleans
8) D.O.A. with Virul Nihils1986 or so at Franklin Ave. VFW Hall. I asked them to play Fuck You and they did. Roch P put me on his shoulders and I went back and hung upside down slamming
9) Dead Kennedys, Stark Raving Mad, Maggot Sandwich and Shell Shock - 801 Club New Orleans, circa 1985
10) Dregs Industry Standard Tour (them having dropped Dixie in their name) with Jaco Pastorius 1982 Tulane McAllister's Auditorium
HM would have to go to King Crimson (sextet) Thrak Tour whenever that was at House of Blues night 1 New Orleans; also HM Allan Holdsworth IOU Tour with Steve Morse Band Tipitinas circa 1984 and finally Ministry at Lollapolooza 1992. \m/
10. The Werks 10.11.15 Rams Head 9. Toe 07.14.15 Union Transfer 8. Red Hot Chili Peppers 2011 or 2012 at Prudential Center 7. George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic Starland Ballroom December 2011-2012ish 6. Twiddle 3.13.16 9:30 club 5. Tool 9.2012 Izod Center 4. Radiohead Roo 2012 3. Sigur Ros Coachella 2013 2. Moon Hooch 02.01.15 1. Dead and Company 11.6.15
These guys rocked a packed room about 400 sq ft in size. Left this one sweating.
8. Walk the Moon; Aragon Ballroom - 12/6/14 (Set 47)
I entered this show with near-zero expectations. My friends had raved about this band but I wasn't convinced. But damn this show was good. Definitely look forward to seeing them again.
The further I get away from this set, the more I look fondly on it. Those Quadrophenia shows were something special. Hearing "Love Reign O'er Me" live was amazing.
5. My Morning Jacket; Chicago Theater - Chicago, IL; 6/10/15 (Set 52)
I enjoyed this set, even from the back. There's a gap between the Who Quadrophenia set and this one, and my 1-5 are all packed closely together in terms of favorites.
I remember coming away from this one absolutely stunned at what I had seen. This was a personal turning point, when I realized that going to gigs was something I enjoyed, not something I did because it was the thing to do. While it's not my absolute favorite, it's probably the most important set I've ever seen, in terms of forming who I am as a person.
3. Arcade Fire; United Center - Chicago, IL; 8/27/14 (Set 42)
I expected the part I remembered most from this gig to be "Sprawl II". I was wrong. It's "Intervention" and "We Used to Wait". This night still seems very visceral to me in a way that most other experiences don't. Only Darkside, the London Olympics, Boston 2004, and the next two sets immediately jump to mind as having equal staying power.
That said, it's up there. Technically speaking this is probably the best set I've ever seen. Macca burned through the hits in a way few others can, and it was spectacular. But it doesn't beat what I saw the next night.
This set was the culmination of a childhood dream. Being front row, at a Metallica gig, with my dad. This set as personal in a way only the Darkside and AF sets can come close to matching, and Metallica has been in my life far longer than either of those two. My dad used to use Metallica as a lullaby for me and my sister. So seeing them was a treat. The laser show during "One" and hearing the opening notes of "Whiskey in the Jar" are moments I will never forget.
Alright I'll bite. This is going to be tough and ever changing but here we go. Don't judge me.
10. Styx/Foreigner/Kansas circa 09-10? It was the summer and I wanted to go to my first concert. I remember crying and begging my parents to let me go to a concert and my dad said he would bring me to this. Styx was the headliner but I thought Foreigner was better. This was much less a great concert experience more so a great experience with my dad. The show was very good though.
9. Chance the Rapper at Rites of Spring Fest 2015 I had never previously been a fan of his but had never really given his music a listen. I was in Nashville and wanted to go to a show and saw he was coming and a couple of my friends' whose music taste I respect really liked him so I checked it out. It was his birthday and he was having the time of his life. T - Pain opened and it was predictably terrible but now I get to tell people I've seen T - Pain so that's funny.
8. Dead and Co at Scottrade Center 2015 Do I really need to explain this one? I was in pit and Mayer played one of the best solos I have heard in my life during Sugaree. 2 of my friends and I were literally crying.
7. Run the Jewels at Wk 1 Coachella 16 Yes ZDLR didn't come out this week and I just get angry every time I think about it. But that didn't stop them from absolutely killing it. Nas, Gangsta Boo, and Boots came out and I was also one of the first people in the world to hear an RTJ 3 song. I was also super close to the stage so that made it that much better
6. Tame Impala at Lollapalooza 2015 I actually brought some towels from my hotel and took a nap in front of the stage right before this (Macca drained me from the night before). I woke up right before they began and it was the best alarm clock ever. Seeing them in Chicago again in about a month. Right after I crowdsurfed at Kid Cudi during Pursuit of Happiness
5. Grouplove at Loufest 2014 This was overall just a great day. It was the second day of my first music festival (I'm glad I worked my way up). I crowdsurfed and some lady dropped me. They covered Beyoncé and The Who. They even brought out Portugal the Man (who played that stage before them) for Baba O' Reily. I also bonded with pretty much my dream girl (who of course has a boyfriend now and lives in a different state). This was a really great weekend and I definitely would not be going to festivals if it weren't for this festival
4 Sia at Coachella 16 I didn't know what to expect from this show but I never wanted it to end. One of the most captivating and beautiful shows I have ever seen. Sia sounded not only emotional but tortured. The between skits were haunting and set up the songs very well. The dancing was phenomenal and I feel sorry for anyone at the festival who missed it (even for Death Grips).
3. Macca at Lollapalooza 2015 I have never had such a soar throat than after this show. I woke up the next morning in fear that I permanently damaged my vocal chords after singing every work to every song. I had seen him before and it was just as magical but I knew his music better this time around. My only complaint was teasing a Kanye appearance that just led into We Can Work it Out. The woman from Alabama Shakes (I'm forgetting her name right now) coming out for Get Back was a nice touch and he used a video of the sign I made in his year in review video that he posted for 2015. I was near tears by the fact that a Beatle acknowledged my existence.
2. Here is the one you all will hate me for. Twenty One Pilots at The Pageant in 2013. I know I know. You all hate them. But this was before their fanbase became absolutely intolerable. I actually really love this band despite how meh I am about their most recent album. The show was incredible though. I haven't heard them sound so good since and the energy was incredible. The crowd was just as into it as the band who were in shock at the fact that they sold out a venue not in their home town. They played all of their 3rd album (the first one people actually cared about) and my mom had gotten me these tickets (which doesn't ever really happen. I remember having just heard of them when she got an email about it. 10/10 concert
1. Cage the Elephant (once at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and another time at Pop's Night Club So the Pop's show was way better sounding and the crowd was the craziest and best I had ever been in. Even the band was stories with how energetic we were. Everyone around me knew every word (this has been the only time I've seen this) and I will always remember this show. But their show at VWA in 2013 was a life changer. I had met them before the show at a record shop and I had written Matt a letter. I went to the show (which was sold out at 20,000). At the end of the show he said "We're Cage the Elephant and this is our last song". They proceeded to play their last song but Matt stopped them. He asked the girl I liked at the time to homecoming. In front of 20,000 people. I felt like a rock star for the first time and I have kept in contact with them since and they're really nice guys. Without this show I would not even be going to concerts all the time.
So there we go. Can't wait for Radiohead to make it on this list
