The other main reason for legends is that it helps if everyone at least likes the headliner a little bit. The possible headliner pool is kind of small if you do that. Did you like what Coachella did this year discoannak ?
I like Coachella's thinking (Blur, Stone Roses,RHCP - throwbacks but not too far back). I don't necessarily agree that those were the best choices but then that's subjective anyway. (I like the Prince idea, although he played a few shows here recently at a smaller venue and people were kind of bummed about it (didn't play the hits, too short of set, weird renditions of songs) - if he went full on stadium/arena show it'd be perfect for a Sunday close out.
I also really like the variety at Coachella (obviously they are bigger and have more days so they can be way more diverse, but no reason Hangout can't move in that direction.) FWIW I think they started to go that route this year.
I guess I just think there are a lot of big names out there that are pretty recent that the great masses could all agree on. The way every band crosses over in genres all the time and plays on multiple format stations I think we can do better, Hangout!
Bottom line is, I think, people want to rock/jam/dance out during headliners, especially if you're capping them off with fireworks and I just don't think a lot of these old guys can hang anymore.
I'd love to see an electronic headliner (if it's Daft Punk that's great) because let's face it, that's what's cool now. Ideally I'd love to see a recent rock headliner Friday night, electronic headliner Sat night (DP, Chem Bros?, Calvin?) and a 80s/90s? "legend" Sunday night. It's 2013 I think we can move past the classic rock era.
Maybe I'm just still stinging from the double old guy - kings of lame-on triple threat in May...
I am of the opinion that Neil Young and Crazy Horse cancelling their current tour makes them more likely for Hangout and or Roo next year. They'll want to finish on a strong note, surely.

I would hate to see an electronic headliner, because let's face it, who wants to go to a festival to see some guy sitting behind a laptop? Save your cash and go to a dance club.
Absolutely not! When people like Neil Young and McCartney stop performing then we might be able to inch our way into having electronic headliners. Classic rock is too big a part of American culture and our music for it to not be recognized at festivals. I would never go to a festival where the top line is something like Mumford-Chemical Bros-Foo Fighters. As much as I love Foo there would have to be a heck of sub/undercard billed for me to go. In a few years I might change my mind if the top was something like MMJ-Depeche-Good Untz but I'm not ready to give classic rock up (especially after last year)

Well, judging by trends in festival lineups, lots and lots of people want that. Lulz at mentioning Daft Punk, the Chemical Brothers and Calvin f*cking Harris in the same breath, though.
Don't get me wrong, I was lumping them together based solely on the draw of people, not saying they were in the same boat quality wise.

yeah, probably no one, that's why they had to expand the tent and have the 'Bama State Troopers out for Skrillex. (Also, I don't like Skrillex)
and as for saving our money and going to a club for EDM headliners I will argue that the point is the LOCATION so the draw would be that particular "guy with a laptop" on the beach, hence why it's different than the club. Also any EDM act that would headline a festival wouldn't play at clubs. They're too big. Except for Vegas clubs, which is not cheap, so saving our money to go the club doesn't really make sense as an argument against.
(Also I don't really know how to quote correctly so sorry if it's all whacked.)

The Bama State Troopers were also out in force for Shpongle back in 2012. But that doesn't mean Shpongle (or Skrillex) should be one of the main headliners on the beach. It just means Bama State Troopers think you must be on druqs to listen to EDM and want some easy pickin's.
Anyways, I can save you some more money if you don't want to go to a club to watch a guy sit behind a laptop, just go look over the cubicle wall or head to a Starbucks.

There are VERY few EDM artists that I feel are capable of headlining, maybe I'm wrong, please correct if I am. Even the biggest new names, skrillex/ pretty lights/ Bassnectar, don't seem like headliners to me, idk why they just dont seem worthy, the only electronic acts that I could see headline would have to be older artists that are almost legends at this point, Daft Punk and Chem. Brothers, but there's no way that Hangout gets them. And you really can't be angry about the classic rock HL's, classic rock acts are really the only ones that can bring in crowds from all demographics, old/ young/ rock lovers/ even the edm kids and hardcore rap fans often show enough respect to at least stop by and watch the old guy's set.

To add to this I think EDM is much better fitted for LN. The spot Pretty Lights had this year was perfect for me because there is no way I could just head back to camp after Macca. If Pretty Lights or Skrillex headlined it would definitely leave me wanting more than they can provide. I know a lot of people were annoyed with Sir Paul's stories in between every song but I was loving every second of it. I could never imagine Bassnectar stopping his show to tell us about a show he did that was memorable. Just my opinion but there is a time and a place for EDM and it's not headlining the What.
I don't really think there's an electronic headliner that fits Hangout. I don't think Daft Punk will play it and they're the only ones this fest could get by with in my opinion. There will always be rock headliners at the big festivals. I would expect more opposed headliners with electro in the Boom Boom in the future though. The five year anniversary of the fest is going to be big.
On to other news, I started this Hangout board a few years ago and I'm wondering how everyone thinks we could make it better? It needs more people, but I can't figure out how to get more without spamming the heck out of Hangout's posts and I don't want to do that. This is the coolest board on the Internet to me, so I thought I'd just ask you gals and guys. If anyone would like to help out on it, just let me know.
Yep. They couldn't even sell out the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, whole upper deck was blocked off.
Nashville is a city full of cheesed*cks though. For instance, Atoms For Peace is on an Arena tour and I think their Nashville show is the only one not in an Arena. It seems like the majority of people in the southeast (Atlanta might be the only exception) are just generally not concerned about seeing live music unless it's the stuff that gets played on the radio: classic rock, country, pan-handle derp rock, mainstream rap/r&b, etc. Hell, I was at Bridgestone the night before for Iron Maiden and it wasn't sold out either. And Maiden generally sells out every arena/amphitheater they play anywhere else. The crowd at that show made me feel like I was in f'n Biloxi too...bunch of redneck doofuses. I didn't get that impression from Maiden's Atlanta show the year before.
Muse are still big enough to headline any festival in the world. Especially f'n Hangout. Your examples from the past 3 years are WSP, Jack White, and Stevie Wonder. All 3 are less expensive to book than Muse. I suppose Muse wouldn't be as big of a draw in southeast as anywhere else, but arena shows and festivals are two completely different animals when considering how well a band will draw though. People travel all over the country for festivals, especially this one as it is just as much of a vacation as it is a music festival. So the question is not whether Muse is big enough...it's are they enough of a draw to consider booking for hangout and does Huka even give a shiz if they are counting on the other two being the big draw for the local attendees?
I feel like Hangout will get one band like Muse/Arcade Fire/Atoms for Peace/Black Keys, one legend act, and then another failed attempt to get Phish that will result in Jack Johnson sending all the hetti folks back to their condos early for the night. I really hope I'm wrong about the latter, but it just seems inevitable at this point.
"A.J. Niland of Huka, questioned about his company’s relationship with the Hangout Music Fest, said that after three years in which Huka played a major role, it is no longer directly involved in planning of the 2014 Hangout Fest. But his company is actively booking theater shows throughout the Southeast and also is running other significant festivals."
Wow, this is news to me. I knew the city council shot down huka/smg control of the saenger, or at least until some changes were made in contract. That is still kind of vague though and I wonder if they're still helping out or if hangout is using a different completely different booking company. I have a bad feeling about this. Prepare yourselves for bayfest on the beach.

Didn't some company buy Hangout last year? Or am I confusing that with Voodoo? Or did both get bought by the same company? Trying to come up with some information on google and I couldn't figure it out.
Anyway, whoever got bought, I remember reading about the company at the time and not feeling like they were the kind of company that would come in and screw up a good thing. Your typical bayfest crowd has an aneurysm at the thought of bayfest tickets going up $15 for a weekend pass, so any halfway decent festival management company has to know who the market is for $200 festival tickets, and its not Three Days Grace and Theory of a Deadman fans.
Regardless I'll buy tickets in the blind presale, and will continue to do so year after year unless Hangout does completely go down the tubes.

I was joking about the bayfest on the beach. I am curious though if this will completely change the pattern/formula of how booking is done for hangout. Will they continue to focus on the jam crowd?
Do you get off work for black friday? you should round up some friends and try to do the $50 ticket thing if so. Assuming they do it again this year.

I've tried to get caught up with some of the ideas in this great board. HUKA entertainment and Hangout Fest are now owned by SFX. I'm not sure what that means for in terms for who books the fest for 2014. My guess would be HUKA but SFX now owns several booking agencies. Using a local booker makes since; but until I see something in writing, I've got no clue. We do know HUKA got the go ahead last week from the city council of Mobile to start booking shows again at the Saenger. If I was betting I'd say HUKA is not booking the fest next year. They now have another festival on the beach and I believe partnered with Winter Circle for BUKU.
I'm starting to think that this festival may have a new home in the near future in a beach town that's less family oriented. I'd bet we'll see more police in 2014, more stop and search, and whatever the hell else the city thinks will make them feel safe.

Here's everything I could find. Evidentally, that deal with SFX and Huka fell through. I still can't believe that Huka isn't booking Hangout. The last two lineups have not been very good for my tastes, but nothing will ever top that second year I don't think. It was marvelous and Huka booked that one too.
This is from that first al.com article...
(After the meeting, Niland also confirmed another parting of the ways: Earlier this year, industry publication Billboard.com reported that Huka had been purchased by SFX Entertainment. Niland said that deal had since been cancelled but disputed any perception of a setback, saying that Huka is an expanding company with more employees now than it had a year ago.)
Evidentally, Huka is also working on a festival in BC?
Also, Arcade Fire isn't playing festivals, just stadiums
What's your source for this? Do you just mean US fests?
Because Arcade Fire is playing all of these Big Day Out Festival 2014 Dates: 01/17 – Auckland, New Zealand 01/19 – Gold Coast, Australia 01/24 – Melbourne, Australia 01/27 – Sydney, Australia 01/31 – Adelaide, Australia 02/02 – Perth, Australia
If I was betting I'd say HUKA is not booking the fest next year.

I just checked and Ryan Chavez from Huka is no longer the Hangout fb page admin. I think I had checked a couple of weeks ago and he still was. It doesn't say who is now, so whoever took over the reigns made that information private.
