I worked a 12 in the psych ED today. My all day patient was a 25 year old man with no psychiatric history who has been intermittently catatonic, and not caring for himself in general for well over a month. Catatonia is a rare and extreme physical response to psychological distress. I've seen it four times in the 20 some years I have been working in psych. All four patients had extremely slow movements, to the point of not moving at all for hours at a time. It is difficult to watch in and of itself.
How this young man came to be in this state is that just before Mother's Day he and his younger four siblings witnessed their mother being shot to death by her boyfriend. One of them tried to stop him and was pistol whipped. This poor boy. This poor family. The world is hell and work is hell. This is why nurses drink.
My company has been really shitting the bed over the last few months so I'm on the hunt. I just applied for a marketing position with Live Nation. It could be a dream job... or it could be absolute hell. It feels a lot like sleeping with the enemy...
And I got the layoff notice. Either improve my performance by an unrealistic expectation (which I won't know till I accept) or take a severance package. I work at Meta so it's a clear sign the big tech companies will start rolling out more layoffs. I'm really annoyed at how sketchy it all went down but I can't dispute it. Like, I'm literally given no options to do so. The severance is nice and I'm able to take quite a few months off but I've been involved with the company for over 5 years so it's a big chunk of my life gone. Oh well. Onto the next one.

That sucks. Take the severance. You will get something even better. My brother in law got the same BS unrealistic expectation performance evaluation. Took the severance and and wound up with a lot better job.

I took it. Last day is Friday. The whole week I've been processing the news since I was not prepped for this scenario. We have been bleeding ourselves by not hiring anyone despite our headcount drastically low so I didn't really think the layoffs would come to my team.

I know people who work for them but more on a localized level. They're pretty desperate for smart people. One of them just had an opportunity to move up to marketing and sales for a specific venue. But that individual makes too much money with a second gig to give it up and go full time. I think that one was around $55-60k with some commission for venue rental which is not anything special but certainly not terrible either. So if you live somewhere where the cost of living and wages are higher, you can probably do okay (not to mention getting to see tons of shit free and even the occasional free festival band if you ask).
Someone brought Shipley's Donuts today. But they were stale. I had to go to the kitchen to microwave mine for 10 seconds which of course brings a donut back to good as new. But still, they're going to have to demand fresher donuts when they go to the shop before 8:00am.

I don't normally complain about my job - I have it pretty good. But recently a coworker - who is younger, less senior, and not as good as me (though very good) - got picked for an assignment that I wanted. This is both devastating and angering me. Frankly, I don't know how I can stay at this job. I think of all the work this person gets to do that I would love to do and I just can't get over it - I think about it when going to sleep, first thing when I wake up...I'm generally pretty good with work/life balance but this is really getting to me.

How long is the assignment for? Have you communicated you concerns with your boss? It could wind up being too much for this employee and you get the job in the end. Try to be supportive and trust that something good will come your way. If it continues to be a problem, maybe it is time to look for something else.

I'd guess it will be an assignment for about a year, but could be two. It won't be too much for my coworker because of the way the work is structured - it's hard to explain. But this is an assignment that I've wanted for 13 years. That my coworker - who is one of my three best work friends - was assigned this really feels like the end of the road.

work is hell is maybe too strong of a phrase, but i got in this morning at 8am, worked for a bit, had to go to a funeral, then got back and worked some more, feel like i'm tired and i've been working hard, look at the clock it's 2:20pm, look at my clocks and i've posted a whopping 2.95 hours of chargeable time. geez.
fridays always feel tricky anyway because most people work from home so i feel weird being in the office, like i should go home.

Less work is hell, more I’m a doofus, but today I had to take my computer in to work for a software installation. I got halfway down my road before turning back because I remembered I should probably put a bra on to go into the office.
When doing the install, they signed in to the admin account, so I had to put in my user name and password to sign on. I always have to put in my password, but my user name is usually already filled in, so I don’t have to put it in. I couldn’t remember what it was and had to call IT to find out. It’s my name.

I work with a woman who frequently has questions at like four thirty on a Friday or the day before Thanksgiving. I don’t know if she just wants to make sure we know she’s working at these times or what, but I wish she’d learn to wait until Monday for these things.

I just got an email for a new (non-urgent) issue this morning and I'm very annoyed. It came in at 10am, I can only imagine how annoyed I would be if it came in at 4:30. This is an unspoken law.

The dance between "make money to live and further your artistic career with private artistic business coach sessions" and "have enough time and space and brain power to make art" is the worst dance. And I've been dancing it for almost 20 years.
Do I want to take on more shifts so I can pay someone $75 an hour for advice that may or may not work? Fuck no. Can I keep treading water in my mediocre stage of my career? Fuck no.

Because I work for research professors, any academic break means I'm busy as hell because they're done teaching and ready to ramp up their research again.
I've been doing this work for over a decade but every "break" I'm still surprised by the bump in activity lol.

I'm almost at 15 years and I still am surprised about how many people assume I get summers off.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

This could go in the yay thread but it’s still work so it’s going here:
I got a new job! At a different health insurance company! They had originally rejected me but got approval to hire more reps. the manager I interviewed with first apparently really liked me and spoke very highly of me. I knew I blew the second interview with his boss as soon as I ended the call. Thankfully I didn’t completely blow it and just fell a little bit short. Lesson learned: Don’t do interviews after working all day.

Haven't been in the office for a start to the new year since 2020, I forgot how much you hear about people rattle on about "being bad" over the holidays for eating holiday treats and drinking eggnog and shit. Please take your disordered eating thoughts out of earshot, thank you.

Someone that was sitting at my desk (for god knows how long) and then lingered in our shared workspace for over an hour just let us know her husband has the new strain of covid.
If I finally get covid after this long because of their trip to costa rica I'm gonna be pissed.

With good reason. What a douche. Sorry hope you stay negative.

Hey, so it turns out the company that hired me back in July is a complete and utter shitshow. Three times in the past month, I've been told to convey certain messaging about someone's pay, job status, or team structure to the people who report to me, only to have those things reversed a couple of weeks later (the latest example - a freelancer who was told he could be onboarded to salaried employment, signed his agreement, and now it's being blocked because of nothing having to do with him or his performance). The operations team implements new policies without even letting the people it's going to affect know it's coming, or taking the time to kick the tires on them to discover whether there are any gaping holes that are going to cause further problems. There's no plan. There's no strategy. Apparently, we're losing money, which wasn't communicated to me until just now, and only because I pressed on it. Meanwhile, literally everyone here is underpaid by industry standards.
Shit. Show. Time to scramble to find a new job before this whole thing implodes under me.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
