Yup. Meals are expensive here. I regularly leave $50+ tips. The high end places often have impeccable service and the staff there are excellent. They should be compensated for their excellence.
This plus higher end meals tend to be longer, have more courses, be in smaller restaurants, etc...
A higher tip is just part of the cost of being fancy.
I'm not interested in your judgments. I'm more interested in what smellycat thinks would be appropriate.
I've served in about 5 different restaurants, and what most people don't realize is 1) servers compare tips in sales 2) servers tip out a fixed amount, REGARDLESS of how much they are tipped, because it is calculated in sales. Example: $100 cheque :
$5 dollar tip (5%) TIP OUT IS CALCULATED OFF SALES: 2.8-5% tip out = $2.8-$5 The server could make no money
$15 tip (15%) 2.8%-5% tip out = $2.80-$5 Server walks out with 10-12 dollars.
$300 cheque: $15 tip (5%) 2.8%-5% = $8.4-$15 Server makes $0-$6.6
$30 tip (10%) Server make maximum $15-$21.2
$45 (15%) Server makes 30-36.2
So depends.. If you liked the service, then tip more because they're tipping out a lot on high bills. Same thing if you didn't like the food, but service was good. Be mindful the kitchen gets tipped out regardless. Also, if you have coupons/bogos.. etc, be mindful that the amount isn't on the bills. Servers hate promos like that because we make less tips - tip on what they amount would have been if you got food discounted.

Knocked out 325 at Le Bec Fin in Philly several years ago. 9 course with wine flight. 20% tip was gladly left. Agree with others that it should be considered standard with any dollar amount.
"wow. thank you so much for your suggestions - everything you picked out was exceptional" $20 on a $175 ticket
"that was the best dessert I've ever eaten" $4 on a $56 ticket
"this is the best meal I've had in years!" $16 on a $145 ticket
LOL!!
What do you think a tip should be on a $300 meal? Is there a point where the 15-20% tip rule no longer applies?
Edit: I'm not suggesting that those above listed tips are reasonable. I'm just curious to know from someone who actually has worked as a server.
$300 meal? I expect $60 at least. I'm running around for you, hand and foot, trying to ensure everything you have is awesome and up to your standards. I'm making sure you and your guests are well fed and happy and enjoying your experience. I'm making the effort to walk through every portion of the menu with you and share my knowledge and make sure you're having a good time.
I have bills that are regularly above the $600 range at my restaurant. there is no point where the percentage rule goes away. the higher your bill goes, the more a server cares and the more work they have to put into it. along with that, the more the server has to tip out.
at my restaurant I have to tip out food runners, wait assistants, and bartenders. those are all based off my sales, not what someone feels like they should tip me.
and as an aside, I know I'm an excellent server. I'm really really good at what I do. and I can also admit when I give poor service. which, honestly, is very rare. if I'm giving solid service, I expect a person to treat me with respect.
if you can't afford the meal + tip, please excuse yourself from my establishment. this is the money I live off of. people often forget that part. people tend to take for granted the amount of hard work servers do. it's not fucking easy.
I fucking hate people who come in, act all nice, give you a million compliments, and then leave you a shitty tip. as if them being pleasant is a tip enough for you. that shit doesn't pay my student loans.
$67 ticket. in the tip line: "don't suck a dick for a dollar"
fuck this. I can't wait to get out of doing this full time. the amount of shit I put up with from complete strangers every single day is just too much. this is by far the rudest thing a customer has ever done to me.

Holy fuck. I can't believe someone would actually write that! And that asshole probably thought they were hilarious too, joking about it later with his friends. Douche.
That's so far out of line, that really sucks. Sorry it's been such a shitty time there recently. But remember, you're almost out of there!

UGH, I saw that snap but couldn't quite read it 100% all bleary eyed this morning. That is awful. Unbelievably rude.

OH HELL NO!
Reminds me of a story my Mom told me when she was serving in a very upscale restaurant. She had been serving a table of six who had her running around like crazy for two hours. At this establishment, she was told she needed to "float" through the dining room and it was all she could do not to run to keep up with their demands. As the group was leaving, she noticed they had left a quarter on the table as a tip. They stopped to talk to people they knew near the front of the restaurant. Mom my walked up and screamed "YOU FORGOT SOMETHING!" and hurled the quarter at the man's head.
Edited to add, she lost that job but didn't regret it one bit.

LOL, my Mom did the same thing with pennies People have been rude to servers FOREVER. Boo.
This is my boss' last week. Starting Monday, I will be all by myself (sometimes having co-workers flying down) until December 31. Good thing I have you guys.

On my last day of work at a restaurant I did the same thing! They left me the "change" on they $59.37 bill, they paid with 3 $20s. I ran outside and threw the change at them, and told them they forgot their change.

I was fucking fuming. my face and neck were bright red for a solid few hours and I didn't even speak to my coworkers except for "fuck people..." if I hadn't already been cut for the night, I think I would have walked out.
they seemed so normal, too. but I guess you can never tell. I don't understand how streaks of terrible people like this happen. I work in a fairly upscale restaurant - like, it's not cheap to eat there. but some of the people I deal with... blerg.
and yes, almost out!!! I'll be starting class a month from yesterday
The worst tip I have given (in my memory) is about 15% for REALLY bad service. I feel guilty going lower no matter the service. I'll regularly still tip 20% for bad service, tend to tip 21-25% for the average meal, 30-50% for happy hour, and I tip as much as 150% at my regular joint. custeph and I tipped $22 on our $18 check last week (happy hour prices and free drinks).
I picked up a check a few summers ago that was $600-$650. I know I tipped $20 or so on top of the 20% added gratuity. I know the total charge on my account was upwards of $700, so the tip had to have been around $150. I believe that it was my highest tip I have ever paid alone. So yes, I have tipped more than $60! I have worked in restaurants since age 14 and still work in one part-time.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

It's too bad you didn't get a chance to confront that asshole. Since you're leaving in less then a month, could have gone out with style!

haha I would have loved to. I didn't grab the check from the table until after they left, unfortunately.
the timing was rather ironic. I had one table (this rather young, really nice couple, right next to the "suck a dick" table) who had a couple of cards declined... they got some cash together to pay after their cards didn't work. when I went to take their payment the boy grabbed my arm said "I'm really really sorry about the tip. we didn't expect this to happen, so I just wanted to apologize for it because it's not enough" I told them not to worry about it, shit happens, yadda yadda. I take the cash and it's still almost an 18% tip. I commented to my coworkers about how nice the boy was and how he didn't need to apologize because it wasn't a bad tip. right after I was talking about that, I looked up and saw the other table was gone. went to grab their signed check, and saw the delightful note.

Twice, I have tipped exactly 15% for really bad service. Once, I worked out the 15% on the back of the check in an attempt to make it clear what I was doing, but I have a feeling it was lost on the guy. The other time, there were three of us, and we paid in cash, leaving exactly 15%. I think one of my friends may have also left a note explaining that we were basically completely ignored the whole time we were in the restaurant, but I don't remember. Anyway, I read somewhere recently that if you put down two pennies on the table, that is to signify that you are intentionally leaving a bad tip because you are unhappy with the service. Is that really a thing?
Usually, I figure out 20% (of the after tax amount) and go up a couple of dollars, but I've been known to go way up for great service.
