I've been watching too much kitchen nightmares lately. HOW DO PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND BASIC THINGS LIKE THAT?!
Crazy bagel lady used to keep fresh lettuce on the floor of the walk-in cooler. It was in a box, but that was it. Ready to eat food was on the bottom of the shelving in the same cooler. i refuse to eat there after seeing the state of that cooler. It never got mopped. The grossness is endless.
I think if Gordon Ramsay walked in there he would invent a whole new set of swears to describe her and her food handling practices.

Fuck OSHA right?
They're just trying make our lives harder. It's not like they're looking out for our safety or anything.
I wish I could say that was the worst of it. The state health inspector passed her though. So that means everything is perfect!
As much as I hate being back in the nursing home kitchen, I do take solace in knowing that our health inspections are thorough, we get judged on every little detail. Restaurants have it easy, at least in my county.
Seriously? Someone would get dick slapped in my restaurant if they put any food on the floor no matter how clean it is. I thought that was a major offense? My restaurant gets checked like 3-4 times a year- an internal company comes through regularly in addition to the state department's trips.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Well that sounds pleasant enough to stop a disgusting practice.

You can hire a consulting firm or similar to come in and do audits of your kitchen, but most small, private owners can't afford that. our nursing department does "environmental rounds" and basically checks everything the state would. We tell them to fuck right off most times because they try to make us do things that are just unnecessary. It's always fun when the state does come through and tells us something we've been doing but nursing wanted us to change is just fine/how they want things done.
But yeah, food being stored on the floor, even in a container, is a huge offense. An easily fixed one, but still huge. Typically the inspector will make you throw out whatever product was on the floor and then fix the situation when it is replaced.

same with the places I worked in minneapolis.
one of my criteria for selecting a restaurant to work in has always been the state of the kitchen. if I'm grossed out by the kitchen, I'm out. I quit my extra summer serving job last year 70% because of how the kitchen was run.
just had to completely rewrite a research / pitch document I've been working on for the last 3 weeks. sooooo today's been super stressful. fortunately, after I took a step backward to see where I was going wrong, my boss gave me 2 thumbs up. that's what I get for trying to base my writing off something else. I just need to remember to go with my gut and keep to an info flow that I think makes the most sense.
you're working for a creative and innovative company. you're so hard-working and smart, and they picked you for this internship for a reason. i hope that the issues with your coworker don't make you re-evaluate what you're doing. hang in there, gal. you got this!
thanks beebee!! things went much better later in the day/this morning. sometimes it's hard for me to get over not doing something correctly, I get instant "failure" feelings, but I have to remember I'm here to learn. and I've been able to learn from a lot of other really smart people at this place!
I'm so torn. Today one of my very good friends offered me my old position back in her office, which is a much better work environment (duh, working with my friend every day was awesome), but MUCH less stable (I was let go due to lack of funding, being the newest person in the office).
Meeting with her for dinner tonight to talk about it, but I wish grown up decisions were easier. She really wants me there, and I love working with her, but I feel like I'd be trading one type of stress for another.
So I'm applying for the position in my old workplace, and most likely I'll be the person chosen due to my past experience in that office (with a small increase from what I'm making now).
If I get it, I'm going to have a lot less stress but I'll really miss my role in hiring students. It's a shame that the parts of my job that are miserable (unreasonable volume + bureaucratic minutiae) have pushed me to want to leave the part I enjoy.
The office next to mine is the Dept of Labor. They don't keep regular office hours here in Greenville, so I have lots of people stop in my office looking for them. I just had a man come in my office reeking of cologne, and now I can't stop sneezing. I think I'm going to go shopping or something until the smell dissipates.

I received a resume from a masters student that includes every school they ever went to in their education section including preschool, elementary, and middle school. What the fuck

That's hilarious. Did they provide references from their teachers, too?

Probably, their resume was 4 pages and I couldn't stand to read the whole thing.
Yes, I think it's pretty common for professionals to do this. People fear reprisals from their bosses sometimes that would keep them from doing so, but reasonable employers I think appreciate the ability to search for someone and maybe have them train with/shadow the person leaving before the person leaves.

I did this even when I was a server/bartender, I have never just quit anywhere. I think that is very disrespectful, although some bosses deserved it, it isn't who I am.

Oh I'd never just up and leave, just trying to determine if my friend should give more than 2 weeks or not.

In my current position, I would definitely give more than 2 weeks notice. Only because there is so much involved with my job that I would need to make sure they had the basics before I left. Also, I would try to time it so that it wouldn't conflict with the book closing.
I gave 30 days when I bartended because I wanted to be done by my 30th birthday and I knew the management would take forever to replace me.
In any other scenario I would only give 2 weeks; that is pretty standard and isn't unreasonable of a time period. I do know that some bosses are assholes and when you put in your notice they tell you that you might as well not come in anymore, but I think that is a rarity.

When does *your friend* start the new job?
She doesn't know yet! The new job people are asking how much notice she'd prefer to give. p.s. this is all within the same employer, just completely different offices.

It would seem then, since same employer, that she doesn't need to fear retaliation (though I never trust an employer...). If it's flexible, 3-4 weeks notice is a courteous thing to do when it can be afforded in all directions.
At my work, we are required to give 4 weeks in order to retain benefits, get paid our vacation days, etc. Even moving between departments HR ensures the 4 week period is abided by.

I mean I guess if something like that comes up that's what it will have to be. I might even ask HR what they advise, since they see back and forth internal movement all the time.

Anddddd I just found out my boss's boss was on the hiring committee and had to recuse herself (for obvious reasons). So basically this transition really going well so far, lol.
