This. I've learned that, especially if there is a conflict between a band I want to see on Which or a band I want to see elsewhere, I always go for the elsewhere. Chances are Which is going to just bum me out.
The only act I caught at Which this year was Byrne & Annie, and luckily the sound was pretty awesome from my spot. I was behind the SBD/beer tent, so I couldn't see the stage but had a great view of the screen, the midbass was thumping perfectly and I had plenty of room to get down (along with a few others in that spot that had the same idea as me).
Next year I'm strongly considering VIP if for no other reason than to always have the option of seeing shows on Which, assuming they still have the VIP pit next year.
This was my first VIP year, and every show I saw at the Which Stage was fantastic. Especially Grizzly Bear, which was my favorite show of the weekend behind Paul McCartney. I walked into the VIP pit for that show about 10 minutes before they went on. Distance from the Which Stage can turn a terrific performance into an awful one. However, in close proximity to the Which Stage, the sound is actually great.
Ya it was easily our most used VIP perk. We watched like 4-5 shows from the pit and they were all great. The only one we had to line up for more then 10 mins before showtime was Edward Sharpe.

Hate me now, but the ONLY disappointment for me was was Edward Sharpe. The sound was horrid, and their stage presence- lets just say that someone farting on a snare drum would have been more entertaining to me. Left after about 30 minutes... but hey, that's my opinion only.
Otherwise, I thought Which Stage was solid this year (compared to years before... nothing pissed me off worse than when I couldn't hear Buffalo Springfield right behind the pit in 2011.)... given, I was in the pit as much as possible this year. Also don't get why people didn't enjoy Jack Johnson... sure, there were a couple of mess ups, but for a last minute 2+ hour set, come on! I mean, would people have been happier had he not been there and the stage went empty?

I'm going to get on my little high horse for a minute. F$$ck VIP. If you go to one fest or so a year, I suppose some can afford it. Most can't but when it gets to the point more can afford VIP then there will just be SUPER VIP. Let people that will do the work ie; wait for a band to play or whatever get up close. Enjoying a fest should not be the privi of the few. My fest days are going to end soon, but you kids don't let them do it to ya.... Off the horse.. cr****
Couldn't hear a thing from anyone who played on Which Stage, which sucked, because I was really looking forward to the Lumineers, OMAM, and Edward Sharpe.

Well we are thinking of doing VIP camping next year, because it just seems like there was far less wait for them, so you'd get to see many more shows from a decent vantage point. 1000 a person is a bit steep, but I think pre sale is 1500, so now you're down to 750 per person which I think is manageable.
There is already super VIP, its party like a rock star.
Like I said, were thinking about it. With the camping gear all bought now, I'll have more money for such an extravagance.
Only thing with passion pit is, why didn't they do any encore? They just stopped singing, said think you and walked off.
That was really my only complaint. I was 5 folks back from the pit area, and in front of the stage on the right side so I had really good seats sound wise. Passion pit sounded good to me, but then just walking off when there was an hour before wilco just seemed like a weenie move. Maybe that's what they had to do, idk. Just odd
If they ended early that is one thing, but I do not think I have ever seen bands (besides headliners, and sometimes late nights) perform an encore. I think that is pretty standard for festivals.
Almost every band, hell even david byrnes did an encore, performed some level of encore. Billy idol did, 21 pilots did, several others.
Just seemed odd, maybe they had to for the festival, but just odd

What? First off Wu Tang really wasn't bad, but I'll let that one go. How in the hell do you figure AnCo was bad? They're set was fantastic. Unless of course you aren't a fan of their music, which in that case you can't say it was a bad show..

Araabmuzik - His set reminded me of the opening credits to Bruno. I never knew Epic Euro Trance would make a comeback in 2013. I was waiting for Taint to flash across the screen.
Cat Power - Like her, but she seemed off for Bonnaroo.

Well, David Byrne closed a stage, and Billy Idol was a late night. I understand those situations are a little different. But I would not have been surprised at all by Passion Pit playing around 5:00 pm on the What Stage and not having an encore.

I can tell you that there were very few shows at the Which Stage I wanted to attend and use my VIP privileges. All other shows, however, I definitely did my work and waited 2+ shows ahead of time for a good spot. Having good spots for Japandroids, Alt-J, Superjam, Tame Imapala, etc. definitely took some determination.

Trying to convince festivals that can sell tickets at three to four times the amount (and sell out that section first like Bonnaroo did this year) to stop seems improbable.

Not a fan of anco but was with a friend whos a huge fan so i was willing to go give them a try. Was there for 10 maybe 15 minutes and even my friend was disappointed so we left. So maybe it just wasnt my cup of tea but the way my friend talked them up i was expecting something that was gonna be awesome and it just didnt turn out that way for me.... as for wu tang i like them alot as a group but wasnt feeling it for some reason, maybe cause all i could hear was bass and 15 diff voices singing out of tune. Was in the porto when they came out, sounded better in there

VIP is not "three or four times the amount" of a regular GA ticket (it's about 2 and a half times, depending what tier GA tickets you buy). I get not being able to afford it if you're a full time student or just out of school, but if you're working full time and know how to budget, buying a VIP ticket is very doable.

Meh. "Let people that will do the work to get up close"... shiz.. I saved for 6 months and did a payment plan with my girlfriend. We are FAR from rich or even moderately ok on the financial front but it is our big vacation of the whole year. Everyone has the same options to save and sacrifice and "work" that way if they want to. Or you can sacrifice and "work" sitting at which for 3 acts. You make it sound like it is this picked exclusive thing when really we all have the same options to put in the sacrifice and work ahead of the festival. I ate less corn for 6 months, bought very little fun things, skipped Rodriguez, Imagine Dragons at Red Rocks, Bob Dylan with MMJ, and Avett Brother's double headline of Red Rocks when weighing VIP or those shows. In the end got treated to the time of my life.
Not only that I have a medical condition, and I know this sounds funny and some will laugh, but I literally have to pee more then you could ever imagine and I wish this on no one who loves shows. We got VIP originally just so I had access to more bathrooms to make sure I could catch more shows.
I think it is all perspective. I definitely put in work for the few extra which stage pits I got.. And outside of that I sat thru stepkids for 21 pilots. If anyone was there they know that was work but yeah all other acts in every tent we were there like 3 shows early even with VIP.. I think options are not the death of festivals. I think not considering the reasons and work people did to for whatever option they went with largely ignored. Walk in their shoes for a minute it isn't about being lazy or just wanting instant gratification. It is for a love of music.

VIP tickets are $1449 a pair. That's $724.50 per ticket.

$724.50 divided by $224.50 = 3.22 right?

i love weighing in in WHICH discussions. my first couple of roos i figured the bands i was seeing there just weren't very good live. last year i was most excited to see ben folds five and WHICH completely ruined it for me. I vowed to try avoid which stage at all costs after that. Unfortunately its not that easy, and there were too many bands i wanted to see this year on which. I just planned ahead and got to each show about a half hour early, walked up the right side and made sure to get a good spot. i loved every show on which this year. basically, if you can commit and find a good spot you will be fine. unfortunately, that is the only way i know how to enjoy a set there.
Sounds like I somehow made nothing but perfect decisions this 'Roo. A lot of the shows people are complaining about, notably Nas, Wu-Tang, and Wilco, are all acts i seriously considered seeing, but ending up skipping for other sets I loved.
I got lucky. Its hard to know when a set will be a stinker sometimes, whether it be because of the sound, the song selection, or the performance itself.
In general I've learned to avoid Which at all costs. DB&SV sounded fantastic on Which though, probably because it was so easy to get a close spot.
Keep in mind, "stinker" is quite subjective. People have been shitting all over Wu-Tang in this thread, but to me, they're iron clad in my pantheon of top-five shows for the weekend. Even Nas -- he wasn't life-changing my any means, but hell, I walked right into the pit two minutes before show time and had a fun hour! Disappointment derives from expectations. When you go into Roo with no expectations, it's hard to be disappointed by anything.

My point wasn't really about the working for a spot but more the bucks. You are right with what you said but for me and my gal, if we did VIP at each of the fests we have or are going to, it would add about 5K. For me that's a few more than I can afford to pay for shows just for the summer. I'm more talking about the people that at the last minute buy VIP on Craigslist or whatever because money doesn't mean that much to them. I worked 30 years at my job so I could enjoy my music so it's not like I feel someone owes me something but I like an even playing farm as it were ... cr****

Ya I get ya I really do. I'll admit there are a bunch of people who last minute buy them because it is "the thing to do" or all the arrogant butts that just buy VIP to drink cases of beer in camp and have a middle age life crisis trying to be something they are not rather then being there for the music and people. But saying all VIP sucks is like saying all GA is filled with college frat bros with pockets full of ruffies and bourbon on hand. I swear to freaking God I pee'd no less than 6 times during Paul's set and there is only so many times I'm comfortable letting it rip in a bottle under my poncho

You're still not comparing apples to apples. The first tier VIP tickets that went on sale the same time as the first tier GA tickets on Black Friday were $1399 a pair. That being said that vast majority of people got price level 3 ($254) or 4 ($269) tickets in GA.
Sure I realize other festivals do other things. But we're talking about Bonnaroo, not those festivals.

And your math still equals 2.75, sorry. But you (sort of) made your point.... possibly. Either way it's not worth this because we know the real deal with VIP is that they are sold in pairs.

We did VIP in 2007 and were underwhelmed. At that point they still included food with the tix... all the meals were the same every day; the "air conditioned" lounge was not; the bleacher seats for Which were pretty weak and the VIP hill for What seemed pretty far away... Is it better now? Where can I find a thread outlining what all is still happening? (Sorry in advance for the ignorance but searching for "VIP" brings up a crapload of unrelated threads)
