Sorry for the triple post, but because I'm already in this thread, I figured I'd post some of the upcoming "folk" releases (may help us get an idea of the lineup; folk is used in a very loose sense):
James Vincent McMorrow (although, he kind of ditches the folk on this album) Damien Jurado Eric Church (a little more country, but non-country festivals have embraced him) Lost in the Trees Beck Needtobreathe Simone Felice Drive By Truckers The War on Drugs Woods Avi Buffalo The Decemberists Father John Misty Fleet Foxes Jack White Jenny Lewis tune-yards Wilco Robert Plant & the Sensational Shapeshifters (tour dates make him look unlikely, but it's still possible) Nickel Creek (only rumors of a new album; nothing from the band or label yet)
I'm sure I missed quite a few (whether I was looking at the wrong source or because I had never heard of the band before).

The New Year is here, and so is our Early Bird 3-Day Offer!
As many of you know, each year the Early Bird offer has sold out faster than the previous year- in 2013 it was mere minutes.
We’re continuing the tradition of rewarding our most loyal folk by offering 10% of our tickets at the Early Bird price. As always, it will be the very best deal we offer at $179 for all three days - and it’s likely to sell out just as fast. Luckily, once the Early Bird is gone, all other ticket types will become available, including regularly priced 3-day tickets, 2-day tickets and single day tickets. No code will be needed to purchase regular price tickets.
Pre-Sale starts at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, January 15th.
YOUR PROMO CODE IS: THEGULL
CLICK HERE ON WEDNESDAY TO BUY (Service charges apply)
Offer not available to the general public and is only good while supplies last. There is a six ticket limit including children’s tickets. Any customer purchasing over the 6 ticket limit will have their additional tickets cancelled. There will be print delay on all ticket orders until June 3rd.
The artist line-up will be announced at a later date.
Getting a ticket would certainly be a good way to start the first day of school. Even if it does mean I have to get up 2 hours earlier than I otherwise would
itm: What's your take on Simone Felice? I really like this song and am looking forward to the new album. I'm kind of hoping he's this year's Father John Misty. I would also think he'd be a welcome addition to the NFF lineup this year.
EDIT: Is he channeling a Dylan song (or two) in this? I swear I keep hearing Dylan-esque refrains (or maybe it's just because he sings "baby blue" in the first line).
He's been on this journey of what he wants to do since leaving the Felice Brothers. Started off with The Duke & The King which had some great tunes and was an awesome live show but then out of nowhere that kind of disintegrated and now he's trying the solo only route.
He has written some of my personal favorite Felice Brothers songs from their albums ("Don't Wake the Scarecrow" and "The Devil is Real").
With his solo stuff (at least the times I've seen him live....haven't been to a solo show in over a year) I felt like he was channeling the singer/songwriter side of Neil Young/James Taylor (who are influences for him). He used to be the more animated/odd/interesting one with the most stage presence when part of FB and I've seen him go from that to just a more laid back, calm storyteller with an acoustic guitar.
I've got his next album pre-ordered and like his other solo stuff well enough but it hasn't hooked me as well as some other things. I have a bunch of videos of him (with and without the Felice Brothers and Duke and the King) on my Youtube page: youtube.com/swalmmd
Here's from a solo show (kinda dark lighting) with him covering Tom Waits:
If he's touring/playing with more band members it could be like this (with him jumping from guitar to drums):
He's good stuff. He's written a few books/novellas that I've got and he's got a way to really connect with you on stage in intimate venues.
Also, this song is what solidified my love of this band (at my first set of theirs at Roo 2008):
This is another great one from his brief Duke and the King days. Great one live or on album:
10 am on a Wednesday? Crap. Heather and I are both working - I won't have internet access at that time, and I don't think she does either.
Quacker and I both went into the system last year at ten on the dot.. my tickets went through for early bird price and his did not. They slightly discounted tickets went VERY fast, as in if you were the first bunch to hit enter they were gone. The price just goes up a little after that and stays at the full amount until they sell out.
I'm definitely picking up my ticket Wednesday!! Anyone feel free to text me earlier in the morning to remind me as work is cray cray right now and I might need a reminder to stick my head out of my work hole. ITM- refer to Fawn's post about selling out. I thought it was 20 minutes or so and then they released more? Or maybe I am confusing it with another fest.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
3 Day passes are now completely sold out. No more on sale, even after the lineup drops.
2 Day passes & Friday passes are still available, which is what I ended up having to get due to forgetting to wake up+money concerns. I got scared of being shut out completely from NFF though, so I bit the bullet.
IF YOU WANT TO GO TO NEWPORT, BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW. THEY WILL SELL-OUT COMPLETELY!
I think if you want a guaranteed 3-day extravaganza get online Wednesday. I remember it took awhile for the other ticket packages to sell out.

And i just went back and checked. I dont recall any delay last year -- my tickets went through priced at the 10% discount for three day passes, and when Don hit enter a bit later his tickets were the full price.
The tickets went on sale on January 8th... at the end of the day as above the three days were gone. You had to move to two days and friday. On February 17th, the saturday tickets were gone and only friday and sunday were left. Do keep in mind that last year the line up dropped starting late January day by day (or every other day). Saturday sold out shortly after Jim James was announced.
I would not dilly dally if you want tickets.. The year before last sold out in mid-March, last year end of Feb with saturday gone mid February.
There will be some form of Quack Club barring an Isle of Misfits catastrophe.. may be not as grand as prior years but a place to stay, a reasonable form of sleep space.. ya'll know the rules:
As long as you are not a summers breeze or allergic/don't like felines/canines/fenines, can leave your drama at home, and generally play well with others QC might be the place for you for NFF.
Festival lineup announcement season means I can start learning about new folk bands that appear on the bottom rows of these lineups (I attribute this to my early interest in Alabama Shakes and the Lumineers, among others).
fawnmart : Kodaline and Wild Feathers are both starting to pop up on lineups (Firefly for both, Stagecoach for Wild Feathers)! You may be right about them at NFF this year.
I'm also really enjoying Vance Joy, thanks to the Firefly lineup. Would not mind seeing him at NFF (even after just a few listens). Also happy to see Shakey Graves is making the festival rounds.

Hi folks, hard to believe it's already that time of year- the 2014 Early Bird Ticket Announcement. It's also the time when people start asking about the line-up, so we want to address both points. We’re continuing the tradition of rewarding our loyal folk by offering 10% of our tickets at the Early Bird price. As in years past, it’s likely to sell out quickly. Luckily, once the Early Bird is gone, all other ticket types will become available.
Now, regarding the line-up: as a small non-profit organization, we have a budget that is a fraction of most major music festivals. That being said, we strive to bring you the best lineup possible without charging major festival prices. In order to accomplish this, there are tradeoffs we need to make, such as not announcing artists until a set date and time in order to satisfy certain contractual or marketing obligations. This is why we do a rolling line-up.
We hope you understand and support our decision to put our tickets on sale this way; it's simply the best way to give you the best line-up for the best price.
The excitement, conviction and most importantly TRUST you display is truly what makes this festival so unique. We sincerely hope the experience we deliver reciprocates that same unbridled enthusiasm.
on the just starting to hear them front.. do we know anything about 'Birds of Tokyo" K2B? I don think i've ever heard of them before yet on the SXM spectrum have heard them several times in the last two weeks.
Interesting on the line up drops re: Wild feathers. Still got a cookie on them.
Was thinking on the way in to work this am... last year were not a lot of the smaller acts somewhat pet projects of many of the board members? Who are the board members cultivating this year??
Hate to admit that i enjoyed the rolling line up in that it gave us time to listen to each act that we were not familiar with rather than trying to check everyone out at once...

I have not heard of that band yet, I'll have to give a listen.
I loved the rolling line up last year. It gave me something to look forward to each day for about 2 straight months. I was actually sad on weekends because they didn't announce acts.
As for pet projects, I think you're right. I never thought of that, but a lot of the smaller acts were bands that one (or a few) of us had been championing leading up to the festival. I know I had been championing the Milk Carton Kids, Lone Bellow, Houndmouth, and Lord Huron. I was very pleased to see them on the lineup.
This year, I'm putting my support behind Shakey Graves, Jake Bugg, Willie Watson, The War on Drugs, Wake Owl, and Ivan & Alyosha (as far as upcoming acts who have not played NFF; although Willie Watson technically played before as a member of OCMS). Although, I have to say that I haven't heard too many new and upcoming folk acts between last festival and this post. I'm hoping to use some of these festival announcements to help discover the next talent.

Of the realistic possibilities for new artists I would rank Jake Bugg tops. He would rock that place out. Returnees that I'm hoping for are Trampled By Turtles and Lone Bellow. I missed Milk Carton Kids there and would not miss them again after seeing them on the Inside LLewyn Davis piece, Another Day Another Time. If you haven't seen it check it out.
If I remember correctly, NFF responded on social media to a request for Jake Bugg last year that he turned them down. Now, I would venture that it was more due to a very tight tour schedule (the big fests in the UK are very close to NFF), but it is possible that Jake Bugg becomes one of those elusive folk musicians that never plays. It is reassuring to see him on some US festival lineups this summer though; I'm really hoping it works out.
If I had to put money on which of the new artists I mentioned end up on the lineup, I'd do so on Shakey Graves and Willie Watson. I don't see either of them making the European festival rounds this summer. Both have been finding their ways onto US festival lineups and seem to be on the up and up. Willie Watson also runs around with Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch, and it seems like the board members like to keep it personal with the artists they invite.
And if I was asked to bet on which artist(s) would return, I think Milk Carton Kids would be my answer. They were stuck in a pretty bad schedule spot last year, but everyone who saw them was singing their praises. Would be fitting for NFF to invite them back and give them a better time/stage.
