I still can't put into words what an amazing time I had this weekend. I truly hope to be at NFF every single year.
Before the weekend I was starting to think about making my return to Bonnaroo next year.
After this weekend, it's Newport or bust next year (and many years to come).
From Quack Club to the festival itself, I can't imagine any other musical experience even remotely comparable.
The only year I may purposefully miss NFF is the year I decide to make Glastonbury a reality. And even then I'll be sad about that tradeoff.
Glad y'all had a great time, but MAN am I sad I missed it! Even though I'm having a great time where I am, NFF/QC is the one thing that I am most bummed I missed this summer. Planning on making sure I can make it back next year!!
Also... my favorite review of the festival so far:
Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, Forecastle, and a handful of other major festivals have coaxed Top 40 covers and ranting and raving out of Jack White as he continues to tour behind Lazaretto. But at last weekend's Newport Folk Festival, the notoriously aloof musician didn't riff on "99 Problems" or make constant jabs at the slightly unflattering lines from his Rolling Stone cover story. (He only made one.) He shelved the haughtiness, the rehearsed accent, and the spectacle for a moment. At Newport, Jack White cried.
And because they are all Clemson fans now, here's this one. They know the fight song & everything.
I don't care if it actually happened or not. An image of drunk Steph singing the Clemson fight song at the top of her lungs is now in my brain forever.

We all (me, Andrea, Steph, Siggy and I believe some randoms joined us) did the fight song while walkiing out at Music Midtown.

I wasn't there for the pic with that flag thing, but my lesson happened in the van (and it did happen- YouTube backup and everything!)
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Steph tried to force a few of us to take home Clemson flags. She's trying to spread it around the country.
Clemson flags & fireballs. Y'all have figured out my master plan.
I love your quote. He must still be working on those MMJ sets, but the other things he has already gotten accomplished. Except I guess AC said no to corn.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Sunday around 3:30 or so, Heather and I were talking. It had rained off and on most of the day, rained a little (and was just blah) on Saturday - was starting to question whether or not it was worth coming back next year. All it seems to do is rain half the weekend every year, and the lineups (on paper) aren't really anything I'd travel a great distance to see. Traffic is always a bitch. Plus, Heather at her current job can't get Friday or Monday on the last weekend of the month off (anymore).
And then the day turned around. Trampled, then Rodrigo y Gabriela, then the Mavis and friends set as the sun finally broke out - back to back to back great sets. Then came the insane van ride home. White Girl Wasted moments we won't soon forget. Then time back at Quack Club, among good friends and that special vibe (for lack of a better term) and more White Girl Wasted moments.
There's just something about Newport, and when I start to question it - it proves me wrong. Turns out there's some really good music that happens here, and not the soundtrack of nap time. Performances which you would not find anywhere else. That Mavis set was one of a kind, among all the other one of a kind shows over the last 55 years. Most bands will take a reduced check just to play here, because of the history and the vibe. It's one of the most scenic venues in the country, hands down. My festival family has traveled hundreds if not thousands of miles to be here. I practically live in Rhode Island, why would I skip something so special with so many great people right in my own neighborhood? I don't want to remember what it's like on last weekend of July without Quack Club and NFF.
Special thanks to Fawn, Don, Tara, Katy Mae, and all the others who put in a lot to make it all happen. Just everything, fantastic.
Most important lesson learned this year - if someone asks you if you think they are are rock star, the right answer is yes. If you hesitate, they will play mind games and probably win

Cool! Kaitlyn & I stood right in front of the writer during Jack White's set. When he said that about Rolling Stone making it's first trip to NFF, she said bullshit. A couple of minutes later the RS writer walked over & joined her. I spoke to both of them a couple of times throughout the show.
I don't know if it's official yet, but Jay Sweet announced at the Watkins aftershow that NFF will be July 25-27 next year (thus pushing NJF into August).
So with that information, I'll start the speculation!
Headliners: The Decemberists (Fri), Mumford & Sons (Sat), Leonard Cohen (Sun)
I still think Mumford will pull a Jack White one of these years and accept a pay cut to play NFF.

Just a question to those who went. I understand that NFF is nota cmaping festival like Binnaroo. How much did the hotel rooms cost this year? I would love to go before I die.

Supposedly hotels are expensive nearby but I think there'd be reasonably priced ones less than an hour away if you didn't mind driving a bit each day to get the festival. I'll let the real locals give you more specifics though.

I think the dates would have to be the 24-26. I stayed in a hotel for the weekend last year and it was only a 15 minute ride to the fort including traffic and it was just under $400 for the weekend
I'm thinking Dylan is probably near the top of the list for targets next year.
And yeah, hotels on the island itself would be pretty expensive. If you want cheaper, you're probably looking up around Warwick (near the airport) and driving an hour or so each way.

Oh man. I saw Leonard Cohen last December, and it was three hours of absolute perfection. If he plays the Fort, I will have no choice but to sell some non-vital organs on the black market - missing Jack White was hard enough. So... anybody need a spleen?
EDIT: Dylan was actually pretty good when I saw him at Americanarama last year, surprisingly. He's probably a bit out of NFF's budget though, and I can't really see him doing it for a pay cut like Jack White did. I think you're safe.
