Adele is a phenomenal vocalist, but I don't think that would translate well to the main stage, she plays with a minimal band and theres really no stage show that accompanies her. Its just her standing at a mic. Again I love her, she is a fantastic artist/vocalist but as a headliner blah
How dare you have an opinion and actually discuss it on this thread!

I think it's more about how the opinion is formed and how it is presented in the thread.
Like I said, it's just MY opinion. Elton John and Billy Joel are amazing performers. Billy Joel is one of the greatest singer/ song writers of all time. He's the third best selling solo artists in the US. The man has done it all. His accolades eclipse Beyoncé's by far, and Elton John trumps his. JT is an amazing performer/artist, the guy can do it all.
I mostly agree with this, although I do think you're overselling Billy Joel a bit. However...
William Martin "Billy" Joel (born May 9, 1949) is an American pianist, singer-songwriter, and composer. Since releasing his first hit song, "Piano Man," in 1973, Joel has become the sixth best selling recording artist and the third-best-selling solo artist in the United States.[4] His compilation album Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2 is the third-best-selling album in the United States by discs shipped.[5] Joel had Top 40 hits in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, achieving 33 Top 40 hits in the United States, all of which he wrote himself. He is also a six-time Grammy Award winner who has been nominated for 23 Grammy Awards throughout his career. He has sold over 150 million records worldwide.[6] Joel was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1992), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1999), and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2006). In 2001, Joel received the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2013, Joel received the Kennedy Center Honors, the nation's highest honor, for influencing American culture through the arts.

JT is an amazing performer/artist, the guy can do it all. Honestly, although he might be the worlds largest summers breeze bag, Beiber is a more talented musician than Beyoncé. She lip syncs and doesn't even write her own songs, what makes her so great? If it wasn't for her husband she wouldn't even be a blip on the map. She's decent but not legendary like Billy and Elton.
So you think even if Bieber writes his own songs, which I doubt, that they are somehow more meaningful than Beyonce's work? Do you even know who Destiny's Child are? Your argument saying Beyonce wasn't big before she got married sounds dumb. The Writing's on the Wall sold about 6.5 million copies and went 8 times platinum in the US in 1999. Jay Z and Beyonce didn't even collab until 2002. Also Bieber hasn't even come close in album sales. Beyonce may not be legendary like Elton John or Billy Joel, but is at the same level as JT IMO.
Yes, Beiber writes his own songs. I never said they were more meaningful. Yes I know who destinys child are. No, she was not at all near the size she is now before Jay-Z. I understand that Beiber didn't sell as many records, I never said he did. I said that "I" think he's more talented as a musician. How many instruments can Beyoncé play? I can't stand the guy but he is definitely talented as a musician. As for JT, he's more talented as an overall entertainer. If you think they're on the same level, well then that's "your" opinion.
"I don't listen to Beyonce now let me tell you why all the men on the list are better than her" isn't much of an opinion.
Lol, seriously? I've listened to some of her music, not all. I'm not an expert on her music, I know this. I actually like some of her songs that I've heard, most of them I don't. As for the whole gender thing, I think you might need some therapy for that. I see this being a reoccurring thing for you. Why did you only include 3 males on the list out of 10 artists? Are you sexist? Lol. You just happened to put 2 icons on the list and a very talented young guy, JT.

The voice is a god given instrument. She went to a performing arts high school - I'm goddang sure she can play piano let alone other instruments. She brings a 10 piece band on tour with her. Saying that her visibility comes from Jay-Z is just ludicrous, borderline sexist. 'Writings on the Wall' sold US: 6,300,000 -- "Blueprint" in 2001 US: 2,730,000. She was selling records at the same or better pace without him. Whatever the case don't be dense and presumptive

The delivery is almost as important as the message.

Alright dude, let's take this from the top.
1. You should really be careful about making proclamations you know nothing about. Beyonce won an ASCAP songwriter of the year award.
2. "If it wasn't for her husband she wouldn't even be a blip on the map." This is a horrible thing to say. It's also completely inaccurate as she was an established megastar before marrying Jay Z. But thanks for validating my (admittedly) dickish comment about you only liking music made by men.
3. This is the big one. You're clearly new to the boards, and judging by the Jimmy Page & Prince Superjam wishlist, fairly new to Bonnaroo. I'd very much advise against going around preaching to people what Bonnaroo is and isn't about. Those of us who have been attending since the beginning have heard it all. Dave Matthews isn't what Bonnaroo is all about, Radiohead isn't Bonnatoo Headliner. Jay-Z will ruin Bonnaroo. People made the same arguments about them you're making now about pop music. And guess what, Bonnaroo goes on, and if you ask around I'm sure you'll find people around here who only went Bonnaroo to see JayZ or something and got hooked on the experience. Bonnaroo will book anyone with talent. That includes the occasional pop star. Next year there might even be a country headliner! Not my cup I tea, but you won't hear me claiming that they don't belong or making gross generalization about country artists that have no factual basis.
1. Music producer Soundz, who's worked with Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Ciara, says that Houstonian Beyonce isn't the songwriter she claims to be. (He produced Usher's song "Love in the Club Pt. II" that featured Beyonce.) So why does her name get listed as one of the writers when she had no input? According to Soundz, it's all about money and power, and she does it because she can.
2.this was just mere speculation. JayZ was much larger of an icon than her when they got together. I wasn't trying to say that she needed a man to help her with her career, she might've made it just as big without him, who knows. I personally think that he helped out her career. I don't only enjoy male music, some of my favorite artists happen to be females, like Stevie Nicks.
3. Yes, I'm new to the boards. I take it my post count gives that away. No, I'm not new to Bonnaroo. Not sure how my superjam wish list would determine that at all, remember its a "wish" list. My first Bonnaroo was 2007. My favorite show that year was the Roots. I agree, people have said that certain artists would would ruin bonnaroo, I'm not one of them. There are so many shows that I don't care if certain acts are there. Like i said before, Beyonce can headline, that's fine with me. I just don't see that as a headline show at bonnaroo. Didn't say it would ruin bonnaroo or anything like that, but I'd be willing to bet a lot of people would skip her performance. I could be wrong, but I would bet I'm not.
i wish I knew where you lived so I could send you some relaxing tea or something. Take it easy.

Beyonce and JT are clearly playing on the same level
Umm, do I need to point out the obvious here? It was pointed out in this thread that she just broke some record for record sales. So how is she selling records at the same pace? Get your facts straight. The fact is that she's much more popular now than she was then. Could her being with JayZ be a coincidence? Sure. Do you think she had a shot at headlining a Bonnaroo type fest before she was with JayZ? I don't remember anybody clamouring for her back then.
You can assume things all you want. Beyoncé is a singer, can she play a piano? Maybe. If she was a talented piano player I think we'd probably know. Or maybe she's just hiding all of her instrument playing talent for a rainy day.
"Beyonce and JT are clearly playing on the same level", I believe that's called an opinion.

Don't say sh't like this. It makes you sound like a sexist prick. Unless of course you are a sexist prick, in which case f'ck off.

You probably don't remember people clamoring for her to be a headliner back then because she wasn't at a headliner level at the time. She's definitely gotten more and more popular and it's not because of who she married but rather because her music reaches people and they respond by buying her music and attending her shows. Does having a husband like Jay-Z help? It sure doesn't hurt when they can collaborate on stuff. But it's also not the reason she is at the level she is at.
Bernie Taupin was not a secret. They've been collaborating for a long time. He's obviously not as well known as Elton but I think a lot of that is because Elton's the performer. Elton wrote a lot too.
I seriously seriously redacted the first thing I was going to say. Really really holding back my mod buddies.
beavdog151 600k+ on a first week sales is immense. The numbers above are cumulative up to a given year (most of them 2011) = different timetables. We are talking about when they met because you want to have this before/after Jay Z bullshit
I was friends with more girls than boys in HS and College, the DC/Beyonce love was well beyond Jay Z. They are a power couple. They made each other stronger and bigger artists by just being together and talented. I'm not even going to start on "you think she had a shot at headlining a Bonnaroo type fest before she was with JayZ? I don't remember anybody clamouring for her back then." It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. When they got together in 2003 neither of them would have headlined such a festival.. You know why, because there were so goddamn few of them and they were for Jam Bands.

they've been together 10 years? wow.
Which is exactly my point, and why that remark got to me

I didn't realize it had been that long. so were they together before her debut came out? she was huge already then. Their(DC) hiatus saw the release of Knowles' debut album Dangerously in Love (2003), which established her as a viable solo artist worldwide; it sold 11 million copies, earned five Grammy Awards and featured the Billboard number one singles "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy" if there was a Bonnaroo in the form that it's in now, she definitely was big enough to headline. but the thing is they have never had a headliner like that. lots of artists are technically big enough to headline, but that doesn't mean that it would actually ever happen. I don't see it happening, so I don't think it's even worth arguing about.

Elton John would be so amazing on the farm. Saw him last year and he played for over 3 hours. I also voted for Adele and think a pre-headline spot between the two would be spot-on.

Throughout a career spanning 15 years, she has won 17 Grammy Awards and sold over 118 million records as a solo artist[8] and 60 million with Destiny's Child,[9] making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
there's no denying how big she is and has always been. whether you want to see her or not and whether she would ever headline roo or not are entirely different things.

You really think so sang? Maybe not Beyonce, but I think some pop star is inevitable. What about Lady Gaga this year?
