Announced the Avett Brothers a month or so ago but released a round of artist additions today. Pokey LaFarge and Shakey Graves included in the announcement.
If you've never been and are in the Southern Ohio region I highly suggest making the trip to Nelsonville, year in and year out they have a great lineup and without a doubt the most friendly atmosphere of any festival I've been to.
Here's the lineup thus far...
The Avett Brothers Ray Wylie Hubbard Shakey Graves Pokey LaFarge Grupo Fantasma Pierced Arrows The Men Michael Hurley Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas Saintseneca Motel Beds Tweens Tim Pfaff
I have not been to Nelsonville yet, but I would like to make the short trip sometime. I have yet to do so because in my opinion it's a little expensive for what you get and it extends itself out over too many days for the amount of acts that it gets. Avetts and Shakey is a good start though for a little fest!
I'm a huge Avett fan and love Pokey as well and am thinking about going for the first time. We're up near Akron.
I have a few questions though - do they post a schedule beforehand? And does the headliner usually play the same day every year? And can you get day passes?
I'd love to go camp the whole time but that weeks bad timing, not sure we could swing it.
They do post a schedule beforehand and the Avetts have already been confirmed to be playing on Saturday I do believe. Day passes are also available but to be honest are a bit overpriced. I paid for a day pass last year to see Wilco and some other bands and if I remember correctly the price was somewhere around $90 but I could be wrong about that and the day passes vary in price depending on the day.
As far as ticket prices being overpriced in general I don't agree. I've gone for the last three years and each and every year the atmosphere itself is truly incredible, as I stated in my last post it's an incredibly friendly place and the organizers are very down to earth individuals. The festival itself is ran by a non-profit opera house (Stuarts) that's based in Nelsonville itself (an incredible venue in and of itself), so it's going to a good cause. They do different things such as after school music programs for the youth. I'm not necessarily trying to convince anybody to make the trip but I'll be completely honest and say that the vibe that exists there is truly unique.

I was the one who made the overpriced comment. By no means am I saying it's not a great atmosphere (I've never been, but the atmosphere IS what would get me there for a weekend). It's just, compared to other small festivals, I don't really feel like I'm getting a deal at Nelsonville. I could get a 2 day pass to Riot Fest in Chicago for $70. There are at least 32 bands on the lineup that I'd have to pay $25+ to see live if I wasn't catching them at a festival (one of them last year was a reunion!). As for Nelsonville, (I don't know how much the earliest tickets cost but) tickets right now are $100 and there are only about 6 bands you would have to pay more than $25 to see live.
Never been. I go to OU actually, live closer to Columbus now tho and I consider this every year. Avett may be what gets me there finally. No one else interests me so far tho & the ticket price is steep for one band..... We'll see. I can still be swayed I'm sure tho.
I went to OU, grew up in Lancaster and now live in Columbus, and I went to this fest last year for the first time. I'd heard good things about it from friends and others, and it lived up to the positive feedback. That written, I agree, outside of the Avetts, the lineup is kind of barebones at this point. Looking at previous years, I expect that to change in the coming months. My wife and I already have our tics for this year based on what we experienced last year. In short: - The setting is awesome. It's on the campus of a small SE Ohio college, with a river on one side and rolling hills on the other. One of the stages is surrounded by old-timey log cabins and trees. You can grab a draft beer, sit in the shade and take in the music on that stage. - The camping is within short walking distance of the stages, and, like Bonnaroo, we quickly discovered everyone camped around us was super friendly. We took in multiple shows with some of our neighbors. - If you've ever been to Athens and Jackie O's, a local brewery, you'll appreciate the fact they have Jackie O's on tap. Heck, if you've never been to Jackie O's, you'll likely appreciate it. Great beer - at fair prices. - The variety of food vendors was, outside of Bonnaroo's food truck oasis, some of the best I've ever encountered at a fest. - I'm in my early 40s, but we raged pretty hard, with zero issues the whole weekend. If they add more acts you're interested in, I'd highly recommend this fest to anyone.
By the way, MonieMonster I see you list you've been to a few 'villes. I've been to 17 of them, in all, and seen ekoostik hookah well over 100 times. In fact, I plan on seeing them this Friday in Columbus.

Where are they paying? Skullys? I'm off on Fridays, May have to go. Haven't seen them since comfest.. I live in canal Winchester but I have friends who still live on campus so I would love to see them!!

My wife and I have also been a couple of times. Believe it or not, Robert Randolph got us there the first time and Les Claypool the second. We're not huge Hookah fans, but the vibe was cool and it was a great introduction to festivals. Now, we go to Bonnaroo every year! Cool to see other Inforooers in the area with similar interests!

Yes, they are playing at Skully's. Glostik Willy is opening for them. Luckly, it's not supposed to be -40 degrees that night!
Just added: Dinosaur Jr, The Head and the Heart, Jason Isbell, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls, Hunters, NO BS! Brass Band, The Dynamites feat. Charles Walker, Village of Spaces, and Wesley Bright & the Hi-Lites
It's not too bad for a smallish festival in the hills of SE Ohio. I honestly was curious, after the Avett Brothers, what else they'd be able to add from a financial standpoint. This pretty much put a big smile on my face.

Might try and make it back this year to see Dino Jr. and Jason Isbell again. Last year was the first time I didn't go in the past four years. I went to OU, so it's always nice to get back to that area and visit with old friends.

I've volunteered that this festival three years now and I must say, it's the only way to go to this fest. I paid for my ticket the year before that and though it was an amazing time, I cannot even begin to explain the people I met volunteering, the short hours and the friendly staff. With free camping, a free ticket to see the music, and some volunteering opportunities that are actually a hell of a good time, it's totally worth it. That being said, Volunteering opens up tonight at Midnight!
They originally said that they wouldn't have it open until March so I'm not prepared to purchase my place on the volunteer list. Hopefully they don't all get snatched up before next friday! =/

So question about volunteering, and the fest in general.
Can you leave and re-enter? My little brother's high school graduation is May 31st and my family would kill me if i missed it. I have this time off work already so pretty much his graduation would be the only thing keeping me from going, which really sucks because I was thinking I could take him as a graduation present....
I'm trying to go to several fests this year and volunteering at all of them, its the only way i'm going to a fest because i can't afford the tickets straight out.

Absolutely! This will be my first year camping as every other year I've gone, I've lived in Athens. I now reside in Columbus and I'm beyond excited to finally get to camp with some of the coolest people I've ever met. =D As long as you have your wristband, you're golden. It appears that vehicles and patron alike are allowed to leave and re-enter. It doesn't specify about the campgrounds in the FAQ but further down the page, it mentions when the campground gates are open and closed so I would assume as long as they're open, you're free to go and if you have any questions you can't find answers to, I'd be happy to send Stuart's an email real fast. I interned with them two years ago. =D

what is volunteering there like? there isn't a whole lot of info up right now. how many hours do you have to put in, do you have to show up early, what kinds of jobs do they give to volunteers, etc? sorry for bombarding with questions. but you're the first person i've seen/heard mention volunteering here.
also, who knew so many people from columbus were on this board!!

No worries at all! I'm excited to be talking about it! Nelsonville is just one of my all time favorite festivals! So in past years, there have been three shifts of 3 to 4 hours each and you're always with someone else at your volunteer station or whatever. I can't recall exactly how many hours. It's either 12 or 15, I believe. They have openings for set up and tear down so that you dont have to worry about having to make it to a shift during the weekend, they also have spots in the green booth sorting trash and at the beer stations either selling tickets or pouring beer. I've stood at the artist entrance gate and made sure everyone driving through was authentic before. I've also put wristbands on people and sold wristbands for one day only or to whomever tagged along for the weekend without buying a ticket beforehand. So the volunteering activities vary substantially and the best ones go fast. When it opens up tonight, take a look at all the options. If it's like previous years, it will list what you're doing and what time you're doing it throughout the weekend and you just choose and hope you're the first one to click that spot. Then closer to the Festival, they reach out to each volunteer with an email saying who to meet where and what time throughout the weekend and they make sure you know who to find if there's a problem. This early in the game, though, it's hard to tell how much info they'll actually have on the webpage.

so they usually let you pick the shift you want up front? they don't just assign it? that'd be great, because i basically have to have saturday volunteer free. i could tear down though if it'd free up my entire weekend.... thanks for all the info! i'll make sure to check out the site in a few hours, hopefully they'll have everything updated on time!

Yep! I've always picked my own shifts. Hopefully nothing has changed this year! No problem! I love getting people excited about this fest. There are a lot of people from Columbus, I've noticed this myself lately. Woo Ohio! <3 :-D

Update! I just got an email saying that they changed the volunteering management this year and you cannot pick your times this year. Instead you pick a time frame and general area you want to be in. Also! The deposit this year is not the full price of a ticket so that's nice.
So question about volunteering, and the fest in general.

That's true about the vehicle re-entery. We headed to Athens and grabbed breakfast at Casa one morning, and took back Big Mama's for lunch. That was a good day.
