They said during the episode that they were partners until an incident in 2003(?). They also mentioned that they caught the guy (or so they thought) in 1997. During the episode, they did also make it seem that they had worked together without issues in those intervening years. This would make you assume that it was something aside for this case that caused them to go their two separate trajectories. I will say though that I think we are going to find out during the season that Woody isn't doing as well as his appearance would have you believe.
Looks to me that the break up was caused when Matty Mac screwed Harrelson's wife, but he didn't care much, cause he was screwing that secretary type.
HEY! Would you look at that!!!! I forgot that I actually got one right. Nobody likes a bragger, though.
Anyhow, this is everything I could put together on season two so far. Sounds like there will be four main leads now.
So for those of you who are worried about who is going to play the four roles in Season Two - think about this: with the right writing, direction, scenery and cinematography, almost anyone can be an actor worthy of watching. Think about the number of Oscar or GG nominated actors who have either done nothing prior to or nothing since X or Y but were perfect in that one thing. That's what I think is going to happen in TD, Season #2. Remember, Sylvester Stallone has an Oscar nomination for acting and no one thought it was ridiculous back when Rocky came out.
Exactly. Before Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston was "the dad from Malcolm In The Middle". Robin Wright was "Jennay" before House Of Cards. The list goes on and on. More than anything though, I refuse to believe season 2 will suck.
oh yeah! and what happened to the idea of a female lead.
The consistent rumor regarding season two is that it will have three central characters. There is nothing to say that one (or two since the second casting rumor seems less definite than Farrell) of the other lead characters will be female. Secondary to that, there's a thousand reasons that the narrative could have been changed in the course of the writing process. Palazzo could have had every intention of making a female lead, but the story took it in a different direction. History is full of stories that ended up very different from the place they started out at. Jessica Chastain was that big rumor for a while. Assuming any part of that is true, Palazzo could have had her in mind for a role, and when she turned it down, he might have rewrote some things if they couldn't decide on anyone who was a suitable replacement for her.
Last thing I read was actually that it may have been bumped up to four main roles. That supports your idea about there possibly being a change in the narrative/storyline during the creative process.
Q: You said at the time that Season 2 would center around three main characters. Is that still the case?
A: That ballooned a little bit. I would say there are four central roles.

I got the DVD of Season 1 for my birthday a few weeks back and blew through the series again. Held up to a re-watch very well, and there are 4-6 minute interviews with the writer and director regarding each episode so getting some background info was cool. I really hope Season 2 can hit the bar placed by Season 1.
Though if there are going to be 4 main characters instead of 2-3, I hope they stretch the season to at least 10 episodes.
They tell us "Rock'n'roll is the devil's music." Well, let's say we know that rock is the devil's music, and we know that it is, for sure … At least he fuckin' jams! If it's a choice between eternal Hell and good tunes, and eternal Heaven and New Kids on the fuckin' Block … I'm gonna be surfin' on the lake of fire, rockin' out.
I haven't paid attention to movies the past few years, not much at least. I didn't realize how little he's been up to and how bad the recent films (flops) have been for him.

I just binged this thing over the past 3 days , and holy shit, this might be the best single season of TV I've ever watched. It was truly hard to not watch it all in one sitting, and I absolutely loved how ended in that not everything was resolved. Just like how Rust said that nothing is ever finished. Best work of either Harrelson's or McConauhey's career. I feel sorry for whoever has to decide who gets the emmy between Cranston and McConauhey. I sure as hell couldn't pick one. Rust Cohle might be my favorite TV character of all time, and that final epilogue just about nearly killed me. I just sat there staring out the window for a good five minutes soaking in what I had just witnessed in. The light's winning yall.
Sidenote: I'm slightly disappointed in the choices for Season 2's cast. Farrell and Moss should be solid to possibly spectacular, and I actually think VV could really work as the antagonist. I'm intrigued to see what he could do in such a potentially serious role. The one I was let down by was Kitsch as I've never liked him in anything I've seen him in. JGL or Ben Foster would been better picks for a younger character imo. I don't see how in the hell they will be able to top S1 though. Holy hell that was some impeccably righteous filmmaking.
The first season was so great that it's going to be hard to live up to, but we'll just have to see. I mean before this last couple years, you would have never of guessed that a show containing Matty Mac as one of it's lead characters would have been so great. So maybe when season 2 is all done we'll be saying the same thing about this season and it's new cast.
