So this year after watching Mud, Dallas BC and then the premiere of this show last week got me thinking - has anyone had such a rapid move from goofy, punchline actor, to A-list serious dramatic fabulous actor as Matty Mac?
Just watched the pilot last night, can not wait till the new episode tonight. Matthew McConaughey is on a role this last year. Mud, Wolf of Wallstreet, Dallas Buyers Club, and now Interstellar (Don't let me down Christoper Nolan!) . Hes a long way from Failure to Launch, Fools Gold, & Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.

Hes gone from horrible chick flicks to being a contender for an Oscar. Talk about a career face lift! Still need to finish DBC though, what did you think of it?

I just had this conversation last night. It's amazing that Wooderson is now seriously being considered for the high-honor awards for actors. He's on a great run, but he'll always be the stoned pedo from Dazed And Confused to me.
And True Detectives looks awesome. I haven't been as uncomfortable and creeped out by a show like that in a long time, the way it's shot is great and the acting was phenomenal. Also...Brother Mouzone! I love when HBO brings back favorites from old shows.

I'm loving the show so far. I hadn't seen that clip that The Horn posted till now. The flash forwards have me even more excited.
I think Matty Mac's hot streak started the year before last with Killer Joe and Magic Mike. He hasn't been in a bad film in awhile. I wish I could have caught him in the stage performance of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County with Elvis Costello as the devil.

This show is phenomenal, I was blown away by the first episode.
The TV writer from Grantland has taken to calling this the McConaissance, a term I quite like. Even though he was about the only TV critic in the universe to give this show a poor review. I've been talking about the Matty Mac thing for a while, it's completely and utterly insane how sudden it happened. Hell, he was getting some awards buzz for Mud even before DBC. It's crazy.

Every time i watch a new show on HBO i look to see how many The Wire characters i recognize.
ok my question is, or maybe i just wasn't paying enough attention....
i wonder what happened to them in the future timeline for matthew and woody's characters to be in such different places. was it just this one case that made matt's character go off the deep end?

They said during the episode that they were partners until an incident in 2003(?). They also mentioned that they caught the guy (or so they thought) in 1997. During the episode, they did also make it seem that they had worked together without issues in those intervening years. This would make you assume that it was something aside for this case that caused them to go their two separate trajectories. I will say though that I think we are going to find out during the season that Woody isn't doing as well as his appearance would have you believe.

You are literally not legally allowed to talk about Ghost Brothers without stating that it is by Stephen King(TM).

Looks to me that the break up was caused when Matty Mac screwed Harrelson's wife, but he didn't care much, cause he was screwing that secretary type.

Well, I've already mentioned that in the Upcoming Shows thread. Apparently nobody here went.

There's a lot of set up of other stuff going on in this first episode. As you point out, they get the culprit of the incident in '97, split up 5 year later and then in 2013 they're clearly at two different stations in life. Also as you suggest, there's more to Woody than meets the eye - and I think his little trip to a private room to go over "depositions" with the cute younger gal, is in an indicator that he's not the straight shooter we're led to believe.
Oddly, McConaughey's character reminds me of those OCD or Asperger's or whatever characters who seem frustrating and annoying, but you're still rooting for them. Like Ray Romano's photographer in Parenthood.
oh, another thing to his credit with all these roles, is he obviously knows what he can do best (texas boy) and is making sure to pick choice parts. the way it is looking he will probably win best actor IMO.
This is shaping up to be an excellent show. I read somewhere that they are planning to go in the direction of American Horror Story with it, new settings, new characters, new themes, etc. each season. Either way, consider me hooked!

woobs, yes, this season is supposed to be a standalone story which actually gets me a little more excited about it since I feel like it will lead to a tighter narrative. I don't know if it will be the same as AHS where they reuse many of the same actors from season to season.
I also really enjoyed Rust's vision where he sees the symbol in the birds as they take flight. Visions and hallucinations can look hokey very easily, and I think they have done well with introducing them. You can only assume that the toll of the case will cause them to increase in frequency and intensity. I wonder how that will fit into the overall plot.

Yeah I agree, this season being a one off story will definitely keep things pretty reeled in. As much as I want them to stick around I don't see MM and WH playing more than these characters for this season only. Could be wrong, I hope I am.
