First half of the episode was slow, boring, more of the same from last week. But once things finally came together it was great. Excited to see where it goes after the events in last episode.
Farrell and McAdams were both amazing in this episode. That younger guy is pretty poorly written. Vaughn is really bad, low point of the show imo.
That opening monologue was rouuuugh. Vaughn has been all wrong for the character he is playing so far...but based on scenes later in episode 2 and previews from future episodes the character is going to evolve into something more up his alley.
Why are spoiler tags needed for things that have already aired? If you don't want to get spoiled, and the episode has already aired, why the fuck are you in this thread?

I don't understand how people can browse posts without proper context. Plus you see a bunch of shit you couldn't care less about and also risk spoilers.

I'm not reading through this until I watch ep2. During ep1, I had to rewind like 3 different times to try and understand what had been said and never did figure it out. Is anyone else bothered by the sound/lack of enunciation by the actors? Or, maybe I need a miracle ear, I dunno

So much whispering, we had to rewind a good bit this week.

i didn't have any problem hearing the dialogue, but then again my power amp puts between 300-500 watts to each of my 75 pound tower speakers.

okay that was stupid, apologies. i do love my speakers though, and have been surprised at how those mumbly types of dialogue scenes haven't been a problem since I upgraded, especially since I ditched my center channel and went stereo.

I agree completely, I did a lot of rewinding this week. Specifically on Vince Vaughn's 8 minute whispering pillow talk dialogue that turned out to be a long walk for a short drink of water.

Oh hush, you yourself once showed me how you used to browse the forums via recent posts, lol.
i am actually addicted to watching tv with the subtitles on. i watch ALL my shows with it. for some reason i feel like my brain doesn't have to pay as much attention.

Same, even video games. I feel like it all started for me when I got all Monty Python's Flying Circus on DVD. Just couldn't understand some of the things they were saying. Now I do it for everything just easier not to miss things that way and if its a video game I am probably listening to music so tv is a low volume or muted.
Edit: someone who was glancing through on recent post. I have never seen this show.

Yea, the rat monologue didn't work for me but him being vaguely threatening and charming to that guy that those goons roughed up was perfect. The way he was smiling and then went to menacing worked for me.
Haven't even watched this yet, but with the first season being one of my all time favorite bits of TV, I owe it to myself to get caught up this coming weekend.
Somehow, I have evaded all spoiler talk in quick fashion, and I've still not read a word of this thread since my last post. Here's to a quality season 2!

This is where I'm at, as well.
I love Vaughn in the scenes when he's meeting with Farrell. That, his threatening the car accident guy scene, and the scene where he's doing detective work and searching for info on Caspere were all solid and I enjoyed them but everything else has been a little rough for him. The longer monologues haven't clicked when he's telling them. Not sure if the writing isn't as good as the Rust Cohle stuff or if the delivery is just that much worse. Leaning towards delivery.
But Farrell has been fun to watch even as he goes deeper and deeper into despair. McAdams was great this episode IMO after being kind of a non-entity in the first one. I really enjoyed the scenes with McAdams and Farrell working the case/driving together. That felt like season 1 stuff in a good way.
Kitsch just isn't working for me. Not sure if his acting is bad or if he's supposed to be this way (I don't have a lot of stuff of his to compare his performance to). It's clear that his character is a closeted/self-hating homosexual who is trying to repress it deep down but there were a few times when I was just looking at his face and I didn't see any emotion. Maybe that's the point? I don't know. I also was getting some incest-related vibes from his mom in that short scene. They laid that on pretty heavily with her saying not to call her "Ma" and how she was touching him/telling him how strong he was. Also the way she was snapping and barely containing the contempt she felt for whatever "woman" she thought he was thinking about/shacking up with. Thought that performance or writing of that scene could have used a bit more subtlety but whatever.
I'm liking it so far. I really enjoy the shorter seasons for things like this. If this was a 22-episode season I'd be checking out.
Yeah I feel like Officer Riggins may just not be into sex because his mom used to fuck him, or at least some type of mother figure. If you notice, when his mom calls someone a "motherfucker", they both make a weird face like "that's awkward that I just called someone a motherfucker when Officer Riggins is in fact a motherfucker."
Also, if you really wanted to know how many episodes Colin Farrell (or any character for that matter) is featured, just go to IMDB. It tells you the amount of episodes each person will be in.

I refuse to allow you all to say mean things about Tim Riggins. He is doing the best he can. Both his parents are dicks and left and his brother Billy raised him, and Billy was trying to the best he could too, but he was all screwed up and drank too much. All Tim was ever really good at was football and now that its done he's trying to be a cop. He just wants to ride the bike. Y'all just need to let him ride the bike.

IMDB is notoriously unreliable when it comes to TV shows. People troll the pages all the time. Game of Thrones fans know a great example of that.
You need to check the actor's CV or casting agency info. Even then it's usually just listed by the show name and directors they worked with on it, which might not give you the full picture.

I figured out the fate of Ray Velcoro because of the preview for next week as well as some other promos/trailers for this season of True Detective that air before other shows on HBO. Don't watch the previews if you want hints (seriously....one line from it confirmed what I was thinking).

Nah.....he's a closeted/repressed gay dude. Although, I did sense some incest vibes from the mother. It's all in the dialogue though. She tells him not to call him "Ma" because of it being "too late to start that stuff now". Part of me thinks he found his real mom late in life (either after being left for adoption or just taken by social services) and that's part of the reason why she's so against being known as his mom but also so into touching/rubbing up on him. She also snapped when he'd mention being busy and she didn't hide the contempt for other women that her son may be seeing. She was definitely giving off a creepy feeling though.
But the reason I say he is a repressed gay guy is because of: - the viagra to sleep with the girlfriend (originally thought this was PTSD or something but after episode 2 I think it's cuz he's trying hard not to be homosexual) - the anecdote about some "fag" at the bank trying to hit on him felt like he was trying to hard (plus it was random) to make sure that other cop knew he wasn't into that stuff - staring off the balcony and seeing the two happy/out gay guys holding hands and going to the costume party. I thought he was going to go out and beat those guys up but one review I read mentioned how he was envious of them so I think that makes more sense. He also had the part about seeing a dude get dropped off after likely performing some sexual act so I imagined we'd be seeing him in a future episode either picking up a guy or trying to be the one to get picked up. Definitely thought we'd see him pulling up in a car at that spot.
He's gay but he doesn't want to be/thinks it's wrong. Seems that way, anyway.

Until the mother loving scene, I also thought he was a repressed homosexual, but I now think it's because he had a really messed up relationship with this mother figure (maybe a step mom? She sure seems to know his father) that probably made him really hate sex.

I definitely think that's his mother but that he didn't know her growing up. Maybe she did molest him as a kid but I really just figured that he looks a bit like his daddy did when she got pregnant and now that he's back in her life she's feeling less motherly and more drunk-old-whore-like. It could be that she messed him up as a kid but I feel like we wouldn't see him being so friendly to her.
I think she just wants to bang him and he's not into it/is oblivious. But I definitely think he's repressed gay. If he really hated sex I don't think he'd be getting with a girl and faking it. I think he's forcing himself to do what a "normal" guy would when he has no interest in the female sex. If he just hated sex I don't think they'd include his anecdote about the guy at the bank and wouldn't show him watching the gay couple/male prostitute at the end. There's definitely something going on with homosexuality and it's either that he's repressed or he just REALLY hates gay people.

I'm thinking Momma Riggins wasn't around during his childhood because she is an addict. He likely raised himself early in life and she was off doing God knows what. Would explain why she has an creepy physical relationship with him and why it's "too late" for the "Mom" stuff. Would also explain why she got angry at the suggestion she start working again.
