Point is. This show would be miles better if they just cast someone better for VV role. Like Pacino or Ray Liotta
Can you imagine Pacino or Liotta saying some of the stuff Frank says? I can't. Because Frank isn't a mob caricature.
Honestly those were the names that just popped into my head. It was a stupid comment. However, despite the fact that I thought Vaughn was doing well after the two episodes, it has become clear to me that he just isn't the right guy for this role. It all just seems so forced.

CPK and I were talking about who would do better in this role.

Season 1 had this weird other worldly almost paranormal slant to it. Season 2 is just another gritty dirty cop drama. It's good one so far but nothing extraordinary. I'm a bit disappointed to be honest.

I picked:
And he agreed.
Who, I can't see the pic.
Might be a little too young, no?

This season is okay. Not lighting stuff on fire like the first one. The shootout was exciting but also sloppy. I couldn't follow the action at points and just thought "holy shit when do they run out of bullets?" for some of the gangsters' guns. Didn't match up to the big action set piece in the first one for me (the one-shot undercover breakout thing with Cohle) though it does seem like this will shake everything up going forward.
I really don't care too much for Kitsch's character and everything going on with Vaughn's wife troubles. I did enjoy Vaughn intimidating the guy outside the car a few eps back and thought he looked tough beating up the gold-toothed dude last week but other than that I'm not too into him either. I do really like his meetings with Velcoro in the depressing bar, though. I'd rather hang around that place more.
Maybe a little young, but he pulled off a really subtle and desperate mob-ish person in A Most Violent Year.
I really want to see that movie. Oscar Isaac is quickly becoming one of my favorite new (at least new to me) actors. I need to see this, Ex Machina, and he's got more stuff on the horizon that should make him a big star (X-men, Star Wars).

I've loved him in everything I've seen (Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year, & Ex Machina). He will also be in HBO's new mini-series.
Also, Oscar Isaac was awesome in Drive. I'm a huge fan.
Yea, was just about to mention this. I originally saw Drive a while ago but only realized that it was Oscar Isaac on a recent re-watch (after getting to know who he is and seeing him in other roles). Was blown away that I didn't remember him in the movie and thought he was fantastic in that. Small role but made it feel real.

I don't think your comment was stupid. Pacino is my favorite mob actor of all time, between Michael Corleone and Tony Montana.

For sure, but stupid in the sense that they wouldn't really be right for this role either, and I just thought of two guys from famous mob movies.

Agreed. So many movies and tv shows have the sketchy boyfriend of the cute girl who lives across the hall and they are almost always caricatures even on good tv and movies (the recent Mr. Robot episodes for example). Oscar Isaac crushes everything. I wish Inside Llewyn Davis got him an Oscar nomination because he deserved it.
Just want to hop on the love train fro Oscar Isaac. Inside Llewyn Davis was brilliant and he definitely deserved a nomination for that, but the Academy really didn't like that movie (it got two noms for cinematography and sound mixing). I still listen to the soundtrack for that movie fairly regularly. His part and performance in Drive was great, and I liked that ILD paired him up with Carey Mulligan again, who I also love. I'm excited for him in Star Wars. I thought he would've made a good sith, but his part still looks good. He also came on stage for a duet with the artist Gaby Moreno when she opened for Punch Brothers in NYC, and I was hoping he'd come out with them when they sang "The Auld Triangle."

Ani pulling out a knife at the end of that gunfight and then sliding it back away in her boot holster thing made me laugh a lot for some reason. Like....I wanted to see her run out and start using it.

That was such a bummer. I thought she was about to julienne some gangsters.
the characters while trouble aren't really engaging. they just dont feel honest. The first season the tortured nature of Cole felt real, and Hart really felt like a failed man. Vince Vaughn's character isn't relatable, and he should be, because the archetype of losing it all is something anyone can understand. they just dont really drive the madness home, they dont drive home the chaos and fear. they talk about it, but it feels clinical. The rachel mcadams character, too bad ass, no real connection to her vulnerability. The gay guy, i actually like the character, and it seems like the story is about to develop. Vilcaro, probably the best of the bunch but the piece is shot so Film Noiresque that the interactions between him and other characters doesnt really hit for me. The backyard scene, was the icon of this disconnected execution. I personally love the scenes in the bar and its in that place that I think the real ethos happens, but its just layered together with so much bad shit and crappy material that im bored to death.
the gun fight... liked it. cross fire with civilians. was hard to keep track but it was brutal. the "cheat code" on the bad guys bullets though... boring.
I think Edward Norton could definitely play this role. I just don't know if he would play any better or differently than VV. I know it sounds blasphemous, but I feel like they would play the character very similarly.
Why did they wait until the 5th episode to make the plot compelling? "Disgraced former detectives trying to save a missing woman from sex slavery and take down a corrupt city government" is far more interesting than "Some old guy got killed to cover up a dirty land deal and also Vince Vaughn got screwed over and has to menace people with stories of his excellent dental record"

Agreed 100%. And I was having similar thoughts during the shoot out last week "All of this over one dead old guy??".
