After watching last night's episode, I think the worst part about this season is Colin Farrell's great performance will be overwhelmed by all the other bad stuff about the show. I've never been this intrigued by a character played by Colin before.
As of now the best part about True Detective night is hurrying through it as quickly as possible so we can watch Ballers before bed.

What an inane way to discredit negative opinions
Complaining about an episode not being good is encouraged. Complaining that a season isn't as good as you'd hoped but you're still enjoying it? Fine. Not enjoying this season and being upset that it isn't as good as last season? Still fine. But complaining that you dislike having to sit through a show or saying you can't wait for the season to be over is a little strange. Are y'all in a household where your significant other or roommate makes you watch it?

Howsabout "Continuing to watch a show that has not met your expectations because there is only an 8 episode commitment and you still have hope that it will come together in an awesome way based on the good will generated from the show's original iteration, all while voicing your feelings about the show along the way"?
Personally, now that they have actually advanced the plot in an interesting manner, I wish there were more episodes to look forward to. Despite the still-apparent flaws.

There are a few reasons to continue watching something even if you aren't enjoying it. Whether or not these are good reasons is up for debate:
1. You are hoping it gets better. There is the hope that something will happen that will make the boredom that came before it worth it. This is my most common reason. As discussed in another thread, this was extremely pertinent to my enjoyment of The Leftovers. The first 5 or so episodes were almost excruciating, so depressing, so many boring unlikable characters. But I stuck with it, and the payoff was fantastic. When this happens I'm able to mentally revisit (or visually revisit) the prior episodes and delight in them.
2. You are so emotionally invested in the series you just can't NOT see it through to the bitter end. Not so much the case for a show like True Detective, which has only had one season, and is a totally different cast and story from season to season. But this is definitely why I kept watching Dexter and True Blood. #2 often has a naive hope of #1 as well, that the way the series wraps up will make the bad season (or seasons!) that came before it worth it. Unfortunately this was not the case with Dexter and True Blood, but it was the case for me with Lost, which got real bad during season 3, but I was so glad I stuck with it, because what followed were some of my favorite moments in television. Note #2 is primarily applicable to obsessive types. Certain personalities can easily hit their "fuck it" button and stop watching a show no matter how many episodes they've watched previous (my wife). I just can't bring myself to stop once I've put in the investment.
3. Everybody is going to be talking about it and I want to talk about it too. And when I talk about it maybe I want to talk about how shitty it is, and make fun of it, and post funny memes, and read other people ripping it and chuckle to myself. Maybe this isn't healthy? Perhaps my time is better spent watching the next episode of Black Mirror because I know its going to be badass and thought provoking? Or maybe I should eschew the visual arts altogether, read a book, or subscribe to the digital archive of Harpers and enrich my life with poesy, or damning testimonies about big oil, or gonzo articles about a romance novel writers convention? Maybe I should exercise more?
I should exercise more. Working on it. But I'm still going to watch the rest of this season, hoping for #1 to come true, but having #3 as a backup to make my choices feel valid, just in case.
I can't help but thinking of Michael Connelly's detective character Harry Bosch whenever I watch Colin Farrell on the show. But that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

Wow, me too. In fact I've been meaning to say if anyone wants to see a really solid series of TV about a detective in LA, check out amazon's series Bosch, based on the aforementioned Michael Connelly character. Titus Welliver does a great job, and as a bonus you get Jamie Hector being awesome too. It's not high art or anything but its well acted, well written, hugely engaging. Melody and I burned through it fast.
It does, however, have the coolest intro/opening credits sequence I've seen in a long time. I loved it every time I watched it.

Right? I hate when people have discussions about media!!!!!! Let's go ahead an torch the GoT thread, Now Watching & Playing threads, Film Discussion thread, the books thread, Album of the Month thread, and everything else that may expose you to these erroneous opinions complaints.

This is the thing the internet is doing together right now (watching this show) and this is just how the internet works. Its' definitely annoying IMO considering while a little disappointing TD is still about 5 notches in quality above your run of the mill network serial drama or whatever. However, the internet is going to meme...best not to get worked up about it.

I do agree that the whole episode made me feel like we had all listened to a four hour story to tell a five minute point. Once I got past that, I really thought this episode reinvigorated my interest in this season. All the running around finally made sense, and the whole mess seems to have a purpose now. The only scene that really didn't work for me was Kitsch and his mom. It just didn't strike me as particularly well-acted on his part and that threw me off.
Ive been pretty interested the whole time, honestly. Maybe it's because I watched all 5 episodes over the course of 3 days, or that I expected there to be something more than just "old guy gets killed to cover up dirty land deal.". The whole kink stuff and camera at the city managers other house and the obviously corrupt mayor and weird psychiatrist implied something a bit more sinister. I was actually kind of glad they weren't being too ham fisted with their foreshadowing. It also seems to be following the same pattern from the first season of " get some unsatisfactory resolution to the case only to have our heroes regroup some time later to solve the case and find personal redemption"
The scenes with trailer trash mom are the only ones that I didn't really like, because I thought there was enough going on with that character with his gf, ex bf/lover, and the starlet bj scandal. The first season was spectacular, one of my favorite seasons of TV ever, and this season isn't as good, but I'm still intrigued and not disappointed. And I'm definitely the type to abandon shows when I can't take it (true blood, walking dead, Dexter for a couple seasons)

I can't say enough how the director change is the reason behind a lot of the complaints this season. I can see Nicks story in there somewhere, but the subtlety is gone. I can't give VV all the fault.

WTF True Detective? Why did you have to go and tarnish the image of VW microbuses?
There's no saving some of the writing at this point but that was a much better episode. The main thing I took from it is Miguel Sapochnik is a director to keep an eye on. More then this episode, he directed the Game of Thrones episode Hardhome. Which was easily the highlight of season 5 and will likely stay one of the top episodes that show has ever done.

Until the end of Ep 4, I had thought about not watching anymore. Then, BAM, in the last 10 minutes of the episode my interest was ignited. I loved Ep 6's opening scene with Colin and Vince, but the scenes with Rachel in the party house just seemed so contrived and juvenile to me.

This was like an entirely different show. I'm jazzed to see how this all ties together. I've been patient the whole time because I figured if the first few episodes were slow, there was a reason. I agree that the director change has been the biggest reason for some missteps, but I bet it gets wrapped up nice and tight, which was the main complaint from season one.

Are you guys seriously saying that was a great episode?
I've been really trying to keep a level head.. but this season is pretty much a pile of shit.
This episode was one of the worst yet. If I had to choose one line to some up how bad it truly was (a la the "bad pussy" line from GoT) - "These contracts...they have signatures everywhere!"

I just finished binge watching True Detective season 1. True Detective season 2 faced an uphill battle. I've learned to forgive it's shortcomings and enjoy it for what it is. It ain't season 1. It is however the best serial cop drama currently on TV, in my opinion. If you let go of any comparison to season 1 it actually stands on its own as a damn good story.
