Over the past few days, I have watched the entire season. Here are my thoughts.
Episode 1: Pained looks, sex toys, shaky accents, and the aptly named Taylor Kitsch.
Episode 2: Incestuous mom, bad investing, doubling down on bad investing, doubling down on doubling down on bad investing, overblown fight between underdeveloped couple, aerial shots of freeways, creepy sex apartment, absurd cliffhanger.
Episode 3: Neil Diamond and Elvis lovechild, mustaches, gay paramilitary lover?, low-rent Mad Max and Braveheart lovechild, sassy gay hooker, Hawaiian Paul Wall, amateur dentistry, absurd chase scene involving a member of Jabbawockeez
Episode 4: Wheeling and dealing, riding in cars with cops, underdeveloped girlfriend of closeted gay cop is pregnant and doesn't believe in abortion and they're gonna get married!, institutionalized sexism, EXPLOSIONS, bad aim but still everyone dies,
Episode 5: Time skip, new jobs, all kinds of dicks, Vince Vaughn insulting everyone, so many lawyers, I CAN ACT ANGRY, least subtle tailings of criminals ever, abortions!, collusion and bribery and secrets, oh my! hunt for the homemade porn, blackmail, someone actually caught a criminal!, condors, crows and a murder shed, ominous undertones
Episode 6: Overacting, underacting, DA getting sassy, knifeplay, fathering from nonfathers, cocaine and chin-ups, generic torture in generic warehouses, prostitutes of all shapes and sizes, literal Mexican standoff, espionage!, icky perverted old white men who run the world, betrayal, Eyes Wide Shut on MDMA -> bad trip at an orgy, violence violence evidence.
Episode 7: Nobody's safe, angry hooker who likes hooking, what shade of crimson looks best on walls?, wasting fine alcohol, it's a set up, no one's in charge, an Irishman who increasingly can't play a Russian, faux detente, blackmail AND betrayal, hey it's that one guy, scorched earth, implausible shootout, sex scene that no one asked for, CONTRIVANCES
Episode 8: Marital strife, revelations galore, so many guns, Ray Velcoro dressed like Raylan Givens, Colin Farrell's thickening accent, CHAOS, more aerial shots of roads and industrial sites, contingency plans and escape routes, time to visit the lodge, HOUSECLEANING, someone smiled sincerely!, the most convenient puddle ever, justified paranoia, black cars and the Cisco Kid, daddy problems, two down x2, bad action movie-level stupidity, unknown disappointment, three down, would you rather it be the rapist or the murderer? lots of endings, but little resolution, oh come on really a baby? Sticks!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH. Hawaiian Paul Wall.
So is this thing gonna come back next year or do you think they wait a bit or if they wait too long will people care?

I think they'll wait a little bit. The head of HBO or something like that took the blame for the second season being bad because they rushed the creators to get it done to capitalize on all the buzz from season 1.
Season 2: So bad it destroyed Pizzolatto's creative will
I hope they don't end up with a situation like with David Milch. Going from Deadwood to freaking John From Cincinnati. I wish they could have made that Faulkner anthology thing work.
HBO is starting to worry me. Fincher's two deals crashed and burned, one was to be an adaption of Utopia. Westworld got delayed again. Which means it could be pushed back to next Summer.
Found the Blu Ray set of season 2 for under $10 at 2nd and Charles a few weeks ago and binge watched it last week. I don't think it's nearly as bad or disappointing as it was built up to be. All of the main actors did great jobs in this, especially Vince Vaughn. His performance here really reminded me of Vince D'Onofrio's Kingpin from Daredevil, even down to his relationship with his wife. The show kind of hit a lull in the middle episodes, but the bookending worked extremely well for me. I'm going to watch it again here in a few weeks, just like I did after finishing season one as it really made me appreciate the show that much more a second time through. Season one was A+ to me, season two was a strong B right now for me.

Nic Pizz is directing and he's never directed before so the skepticism that season two buried inside me is rearing its head here. I think that Cary Fukunaga was a big part of season one's success, as well.
EDIT: Evidently, Jeremy Saulnier is directing alongside Pizzolatto. Anyone see any of his work? I heard Green Room was interesting.

Yeah, he's legit from the work I've seen. He's only got a couple features but all are well liked by critics and the festival crowd. Even though he's not writing, his directing style seems to fit against the problems of season 2. Which hopefully points towards a more streamlined story.

Think I saw Dave Maynar post this on Facebook so I had to seek it out.
Looks good so far. I like that they seem to be doing the same "Older guy looking back" thing like they did in the first season.
All in all I didn't absolutely hate the second season but holy cow was it a step down from season 1 and felt like so much shit just being thrown at the wall.
This looks solid though. Ali has a lot of stuff coming up that I'm really excited for (this and the movie with Viggo Mortensen looks fantastic).
Here we go. First two episodes tonight. Will it go on Prime after it airs or at midnight? HBO dropped Sling and I haven't cared until now.
Prime meaning Amazon prime? Unless you have one of those partnership/subscription things that Lino's your hbo to print I think their deal is only for older stuff. I don't think new episodes of shows go up on prime.

What's your favorite episode of Letterkenny? Also, do you find the non-main characters (all the others outside of the main four at the house) kind of intolerable and wasted screen time? There's a phrase in Fartbook, which is kinda cringeworthy otherwise, that is one of the funniest things I've ever seen on television. It has to do with numbers and letters.
the wife's story about being a writer who wrote a true crime novel about a major unsolved case that was being "worked on" with the help of amateur sleuths on the internet immediately reminded me of michelle mcnamara (patton oswalt's late wife). i did a quick google search to see if that was any kind of inspiration and found that hbo is making a docuseries based on mcnamara's book. just seemed interesting.

Thought the last one was a bit slower but that was because it was a lot of talking/acting from some of the people who haven't got to do much yet. Scoot McNairy and Mamie Gummer both got to have big acting scenes in this one.
I'm digging the mystery. Got a lot of avenues it could go down. There's still more we have to uncover a out the past. I'm sure there's some dark secret with Hayes. The line about what he left in The woods.
Ali and Dorff are both captivating to watch.
There's some rumors/speculation of tying this together with other seasons. At least the first. There's been something in a previous episode that seemed to allude to S1 and there's an explicit connection in the scenes for next week that are very interesting. Maybe just an Easter egg. Maybe something bigger. Nic Pizzaloto apparently used the word "trilogy" about the show recently.
Have to be honest, I find this season to be kind of boring. I’ve watched four episodes and I feel like nothing has happened. Not super into it.
i'm enjoying it.
my wife and i made an agreement with two of our friends that we will watch the whole series together. since sunday nights are difficult, we are all skipping the new episodes on Sunday and watching each new episode the following Saturday. So I'll constantly be 6 days behind, but we are all enjoying the process of going to dinner before, watching the ep, then talking about the ep. so i might be a bit biased because we are having fun with our friends.
while i am engaged, i'll concede it is a slow burn. but the slow burn makes me happy because they aren't trying to do 50 million things like in season 2. i like that the story is simple, but the themes and character development will be complex.
maybe i'm trying to hard, but i also think we might be looking at some complexity in the storytelling mechanism. i think we might have an unreliable narrator situation, like the 1980s scenes, even if seemingly being told from the perspective of 1990 narrator, are actually coming from the more frail mind of the 2015 narrator, which means certain things we assume are the facts will end up not being true.
You guys ready to admit this season was a turd yet?
It was a good season of television. Flawed and imperfect, but good. Not the kind of thing that is going to stick with me and make me think for months but I enjoyed the ride.
Our group was split on the finale. My wife and I enjoyed it, my two friends enjoyed the season but didn't like the finale/resolution.
Generally my friends expected something more action packed, a resolution that was darker and more insidious, a la season 1. The series hinted so hard at some deep pedophile underground controlled by powerful people, to the extent that they even referenced season 1, that it was a sharp pivot to a resolution that was more sad and tragic than it was dark and scary. Furthermore our entire group had figured out this was the case after the penultimate episode.
My biggest complaint regarding the finale and the season as a whole: for a season of television which was ultimately about time and relationships, I found Wayne and Amelia's story line kind of boring and in need of editing. Wayne and Roland's relationship was far more interesting, as was Wayne and his son. Even Wayne and his daughter was more interesting, and I feel like we barely even scratched the surface of that (the payoff in the scene with older Wayne and his daughter in the car wasn't strong since we had to infer to so much about their relationship). Yet we have many many lengthy scenes of Wayne and his wife fighting and making up over and over. Just wasn't interesting or entertaining.
I also was predicting from the beginning that we were dealing with an unreliable narrator in the form of Wayne, and his memories of the past as we are seeing them would be revealed as being tainted or incorrect. Like maybe Roland was in on the conspiracy the whole time but Wayne just couldn't remember, or other areas where Wayne's spotty memory would act as a big reveal at the end. Obviously none of this was the case, so a bit disappointing.
So not a great finale, but the case itself was a good story well told for the rest of the series.
If season 1 was 5/5, and season 2 was 1/5, season 3 was 3/5. Didn't live up to the greatness of season 1, but I'd still recommend season 3 to anyone who likes mystery stories.

Definitely not a turd IMO. I really liked the season and enjoyed that it didn't just recreate the first one, like it seemed like it was going to. I loved the format and the jumping between times. Stephen Dorff killed it and I'm glad to see him getting some acknowledgement and he just signed on to some new show for him based on the performance here. I am glad it didn't end up being some of the insane theories I was seeing people come up with.
I kind of wanted a bit more with the memory loss stuff.....at times it seemed like Hayes was playing it up more than it was in order to continue his investigation but seems like he really was just going senile.
Also agree a bit about Amelia/Wayne. It felt like there was more to her that we didn't really get. I kept expecting more about her wild past or something. There were also times where she seemed a bit manipulative and I thought that would become a bigger story but then it seems like they just kind of lived on happily married for years until her death.
Loved the performances. Enjoyed the story more than S2. Everything was beautifully shot and damn did everyone act the hell out of their scenes. Scoot McNairy was fantastic and even Michael Rooker nailed his one scene bit.
