I'm just remembering the scene now with the daughters in their bedroom with the dolls in a circle and one doll smack dab in the middle, facedown and naked (if memory serves me right). You're definitely onto something.
I am sufficiently unnerved for the rest of the day.
crazykittensmile and I have discussed in chat at some point that this is definitely a series that bears repeated viewings of episodes because it seems like they are throwing out a ton of information without you knowing quite how it connects yet or what is actually important.

We were all so drawn into getting to know the characters that we missed alot of background and even foreshadowing stuff in the first few episodes I guess. Well, guess ill run through the gauntlet again tonight. But the "right under my nose" thing is beginning to pick up some ground it seems.

No, I seriously don't think I can handle watching the show a second time through. I'm gonna need to move onto Too Cute or something similar. This show makes everything else look like a ray of sunshine. Incredibly smart show, just so thought provokingly sad? Final? Scary. All thanks to Matthew McC and who would have ever thought that?

Anyone catch the "black stars" in the dust on the broken window when Cohle was in the school looking at the twig devil thing?
Also that Marty's 2 daughters were fighting over a play "crown" that ended up dangling in a tree?
...This is alot for a 8 episode show.
During last nights episode, there was part when Cohle left the police station in his red truck and there was a big yellow crown above his head in the cut scene. Seemed to be a fast food spot. Trouble finding an image but Patton Oswald tweeted it. link
Could mean that the Yellow King still looms over Cohles head as in he is still very involved in tracking the killer. Could mean Cohle is the Yellow King. Could be nothing. Paging southern posters to recognize the sign and if it would be a common fast food place in Louisiana?

Watching that scene again with the his kids is just creepy. It instantly makes my heart rate go up. I don't read much into the crown thing but with a little research:

This show is one of the best things to happen on TV in quite a while. The layers and depth is impressive, as is the acting and direction. In my opinion, the nearly seven minute tracking scene at the end of the Episode 4 was like the opening to "Touch of Evil." So technically sound and not distracting or showy. You know a show is hitting on all cylinders when you spend the days after the last episode going over dialogue and images/symbols in preparation for the next episode, which you can't wait to view.
And to follow up on my last post, how do you hide/post spoiler info? I have some theories of my own I would like to post. ...
Either use the button on the far right of the toolbar about where you write your reply (it looks like a smiley with a hand over its mouth) or [spoiler*][/spoiler*] without the asterisks.
The rest of this season will take place in 2002. Next season will take place in the "present day." Season 3 will take place in a dystopian future where Cohl battles serial killers with lazer guns on the moon.

Sorry to say but false. When this season ends so does the case and all the characters in it. The next season will be a completely different story with completely different Detectives.
IMO HBO really shot themselves in the foot with this first season. This is a season to go out on and instead they create this masterpiece. They should just walk away after this season.

Sigh, we started watching it from the beginning last night. Episode two tonight! You do start seeing so much more now. For instance, there is a report of young girl being chased by a man that the Sheriff (in another county) had dismissed because she called the man a "spaghetti faced monster," something along those lines. The sketch drawing portrayed him as a guy with yellow ears and marks all over his face. Hmmmm, the man with the scars on his face maybe, as in how everyone talks of the Yellow King?
Also, the billboard from the last episode that Rust drives by with the missing woman on it is also given attention in the first episode. Both times, Rust studies it while passing by.

Should any of this be spoiled tagged?
Since we have no friggin idea if that relates to anything I think your good. Now if you were hanging out with Woody last night and a few beers deep he tells you Maggie's the Yellow King, that you should tag.
there is no way rust is the yellow king. if he is, he is is schizo or something b/c there are too many scenes where he is acting like it is new info to him. even when no one else is around to witness it. i'm mostly thinking of him putting the gloves on to pick up and study the devil things in the school when he was alone. if someone else was there he would need to put on a show like that, but i don't see why he would do it if he already knew what they were/why they were there and he was by himself.
Rust ain't the King. I'll put anything on it. My prediction is some very sinister forces are at play here (maybe even other worldly...I know that's far out, but I can't take it off the table right now), including the drug task force, the church and...gulp...perhaps Marty.

Yeah, I thought the climax to Ep 4 was just masterfully done.
So I'm not backreading at all, but I just found this thread dedicated to this masterpiece. I think Marty is the Yellow King. 3 more days till I get my fix.

SPOILER ALERT:
The killer is Maggie's father. He is rich and hates young people bc all they care about is sex the reason he is killing prostis. He used to have sex with the oldest of marty's and maggie's daughter being the reason she is all weird and having sex underage with two dudes. That is the reason he was introduced in the first place of the show. There y'all go, It's 100% him just watch episode 7 and y'all will figure it all out.
I would not be surprised at all MM. I was thinkin about that in my head too. One of the daughters def gets molested one way or another, to draw her away from being "normal." Also like you mentioned, that scene is pointless without the father in law being involved in some way. There was way too much friction there to be a quick character shot with no actual impact.
