Bonnaroo actually got Louis CK in 2008 when he wasn't near as big yet. He was probably on his way up...about like Hannibal Buress is now.
Uhh,, what? CK was nominated for an Emmy in 08, and his special "chewed up" was on Showtime. He also had already won an emmy for his writing in 1999.
An emmy has little to do with popularity. When his name was added to the line-up in 2008, that was my first time hearing of him. And he is significantly bigger now. Its not even close.
This lineup is fantastic. I have so much I can't wait to see.
Lets see, 2013 had:
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis....were NINETEEN. 19 on the lineup, after spending 10 weeks at the #1 spot with two different songs in 2013. the Ed helms superjam is in their spot this year.
You also had Nas, a hip hop legend who revolutionized the game, Illmatic is one of the best selling and influential hip hop albums of all time. Damon Albarn is in that spot this year. Now if he plays "Gorillaz" and "blur" stuff, then that's still not a fair trade compared to the legend that is Nas but it's better than Albarn's solo stuff.
Your logic is flawed. You think that someone in the same spot on the lineup should have the same credentials as an artist in that spot from previous years?
You want to talk about a hip hop legend who has revolutionized the game and put out some of the most influential hip hop albums of all time? Look at Kanye West, one of our headliners. Surely that's a bit bigger deal than Nas.
Plus, as far as I'm aware, Damon Albarn shows not a very common thing here so I think him playing Roo is a big deal for some.
But the comedy isnt good. No well known names other than Hannibal. What happened to getting big guys like Conan, or Tosh, or CK?
Hannibal is well known and I'd bet a ton of people are familiar with Craig Robinson from the Office and Hot Tub Time Machine (among other things). You're right that there aren't any huge names like Conan or Tosh but CK wasn't the powerhouse that he is now when he first played Roo. Conan was a chance booking that worked out because the stars aligned and the timing was perfect. Roo didn't actively try to pursue a huge name like that every year. It just happened. It could still happen this year but it seems unlikely. Still, the comedy tent will have plenty of awesome talented comedians that you'll be happy you saw if you check out a set. I always discover new comedians and see some people i've wanted to check out in the comedy tent.
I mean they couldn't book a superjam. It's still a question mark. If we get something half fucking assed and last minute because bonnaroo couldnt get it together, I'm going to be really upset.
In the original incarnations of Superjam you didn't know who would play. I love that they have told us hints and bits the previous couple of years but that's not how it's always been. Also if you checked out the Reddit AMA you'd know they are working on it. I think they realize Superjam is a huge part of Bonnaroo and will come up with something that satisfies most people like they've done the past two years.
Last year had 3 stand up sets in the top 50 of the lineup....this year the comedy headliner comes in at 43. lol
So? The order of the billing doesn't really matter. The music will be awesome and the comedy will be funny. Just because you don't "know" all of the names doesn't mean they are bad. Find some new people to enjoy.

still, lets not compare the Reno 911 crew, the workaholics guys (people extremely well known), Chris Rock, CK, Tosh, Conan, David Cross, Aziz Ansari, or any of the other big names with this years lineup. It is weak in comparison. I'm not a huge hannibal fan either, I think he's a less funny Mitch Hedberg.

I did forget about Kanye. My b.
Still, I think this years lineup is weak. Ice Cube is a legend, whats up with his low billing? Being billed under Wiz? c'mon. I discovered Michael Che at the comedy tent which is cool but he's not big so I'm not exposed to him.
Damon Albarn? If I said that name to your average person they wouldnt have any idea. "Gorillaz" is way more recognizable. His solo stuff is weak too.

Don't focus on billing. Make a list of all the acts you're excited to see and put them in any order you want. There's so much talent on the lineup that getting bogged down on who is listed a few lines higher than someone else is just pointless.

im still extremely excited, I just was way happier with 2013's lineup I suppose. It seemed like Bonnaroo was willing to spend a lot more last year than this year. I hope we get some nice tent additions.
Not that I'm disagreeing with your larger point, but I've see the Pixies with and without Deal in the past two years and the version without her is so vastly superior it's shocking.

I can't speak for the comedy tent additions, but in general most festivals are having an off year and I would say it is because of the product that is available than saying the promoters didn't do their job. With that being said there are some good grabs on the bill this year and some fun shows top to bottom.
What the hell is up with Bonnaroo not getting very many big names this year? Their booking seems kinda shitty. I mean ESPECIALLY after the fucking shit Coachella just pulled off. Strokes and the Pixies? Beiber was there, Prince was there, Nas brought out Jay-Z.....
Did Bonnaroo have a bad year with Artists? I mean even superjam "?" is just that -- a big question mark. They have no idea who's even playing yet. WTF, AC/Superfly
Elton John, Kanye and Lionel Richie are almost nowhere this summer. Jack White isn't far behind.
Coachella didn't have the strokes. They had Julian Casablancas, big difference. Pixies aren't the same without Kim Deal. Prince didn't perform (so why bring him up?). Do you really want Justin Bieber? He only showed up for two minutes anyway.
You say big names but don't talk about Coachella's headliners. Outkast are awesome but their show has divided people to say the least. I've heard almost nothing about Muse. Arcade Fire was awesome but are playing the entire country this summer.
So, your perspective might be skewed a bit here. I guess that's what I'm saying.
Yes, Bonnaroo is going without a big comedy name this year. But I couldn't get in for Daniel Tosh last year, or Conan in 2010. The line was even too long for the freaking Cheech Marin show in 2011. So while the comedy tent is cool, it shouldn't make or break the Bonnaroo line-up. If it does, you might be ignoring the dozens upon dozens of musical artists worth seeing that are already confirmed.
This Broshops character is way off, but just FYI Lionel Richie and Jack White both have pretty extensive tours this summer. And Kanye has played everywhere the last two years. They aren't great arguments for the point you're trying to make.
Damon Albarn? If I said that name to your average person they wouldnt have any idea. "Gorillaz" is way more recognizable. His solo stuff is weak too.
Yes, but. The "average person" is an idiot. The average person owns Nickelback records.
Firefly is a good 'average person' lineup this year, with a lot of "big names". Def better than Bonnaroo's 'weak' top billing and insanely deep lineup....
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
To be clear, I'm not as high on Bonnaroo's lineup as many. I think it's a close second to Coachella, but I also think the festival scene is just stagnant this season...most lineups are either very similar or are similar to lineups from the past 18 months. I just think that the average person argument is hilarious. Go to iHeartRadio if you want average person.
Also i came in here to talk about Hannibal Burress and how he might be the first comedy show I watch at Bonnaroo since Chris Rock. But instead I stumble upon stupid opinions.

Bridget Everett and the Tender Moments. I might have to make an appearance at this one. Never heard of her but her shows looks like a riot. Interesting that Ad-Rock is in her band. This could be one of the most interesting shows of the bunch. Ya gotta love a chick that has a song called "What I Gotta Do to Get That Dick in my Mouth"
