I know there are wrestling fans on here (besides Bishop). Where are you all at?
A lot of crazy things have been going on this past week with how poorly the Rumble was booked and with CM Punk possibly leaving the company. Fans at live events might hijack segments with Daniel Bryan/CM Punk chants. And any incarnation of a WM30 main event that doesn't have Bryan competing for the title is likely to have the same treatment. And all of this is on the heels of WWE's network launch.
I mean, it's crazy that Daniel Bryan is the hottest thing in the WWE since god knows how long, and they don't know what to do with him.
Fellow wrestling fan here!! Going to Mania this year. I think if Punk doesn't come back before mania, WWE will just slide Bryan into Punk's supposed match against HHH. I agree that a Batista-Orton or Batista-Orton-Cena title match will get a negative reaction, especially if it goes on after Bryan and Taker.

Nice! What seats did you get? Are you any less hype about the purchase after recent events?
I don't think Cena would be in the title picture, as they're probably building Wyatt vs Cena (and imagine the hometown/state pop Wyatt is going to get). Extreme Rules will be in Seattle the month after Mania, and I think they'll wind up having Bryan's title win then. I think it's also likely they could work Bryan into a triple threat at Mania ala WM20. And they were probably going to do that until Punk quit, and like you said they'll probably have Bryan vs HHH. Hoping for the triple threat but hope hasn't been an apt word for wrestling fans lately as it pertains to WWE.
Hahah, yeah, WWE has been a mess for the last half year or so (not to even go into TNA, good heavens). I thought they were on fire in the late spring and into July or so, great matches on every show just about, Bryan was getting over huge and you could sense something big was about to go down with him, the booking had some real bright spots... but after Summerslam it just went off a cliff, coincidentally around when one of their better new writers quit. I'm sure Daniel Bryan will be involved in one of the four "main event" programs, but I don't know about the title picture... I want to say after this past week, it's most likely he'll go into the Authority angle, but I do think that him winning the Chamber and going on to face Batista (who almost has to turn heel, you'd think) isn't too far out of the question.
I'm a pretty big fan, own lots of DVDs, tapes, heavy torrent-er, so the majority of what I've been watching over the last decade or so has been older stuff. I normally would catch Raw weekly (I think I only watched four full Raws in the last few months of 2013), stopped watching Smackdown regularly in 2004, and have only regularly watched TNA for a few months at a time, seemingly every four years or so. Recently, I've been really into watching early 90s FMW, WING, the dawning of the blood and guts era (lots of stiff matches from that region and specific period, stuff that you wouldn't dream of flying today), as well as old Smokey Mountain episodes someone has generously put up on Youtube.
Just a general stat of my fandom, I've been to about a dozen indie shows over the last decade, 10 WWE shows since 1997, and one TNA house show in 06. Attended Wrestlemania 27 in Atlanta, one of the less loved Manias, but it had a few good matches, and I personally thought that Taker/HHH match was brilliant... horrific time management, though, and specifically Bryan/Sheamus getting bumped to pre-show and the atrocity that was Lawler/Cole were real sour notes. Not to mention Miz in the main even, but it was among the least of my complaints.

I know, right? It was like every other week there was some variation of Bryan, Kane, the Usos and the Shield and they would just main event like every RAW and tear the roof off of the place. I would hope they'd just can the idea of having HHH in a match altogether and just have Batista align with HHH so that the title match could be the culmination of the Authority angle--with Bryan hopefully in it. Supposedly, there were some rumors that their creative team went into a two day meeting to reassess all the booking going into Wrestlemania, and the quote I remember reading was that "nothing was sacred."
I definitely gotta step up on my fandom. I've only recently started branching out from exclusively watching WWE. I've found that I really like late 80's NWA/WCW. I've also watched a little bit of ROH around when Steen/Generico was a thing and really enjoyed that. I was keeping up with Chikara for awhile before it was "disbanded" and they started doing this awful ARG thing. The wrestling isn't always as good in Chikara but goddamn it's entertaining. Seeing some of that stuff is actually what got me back into wrestling a few years back. I'm looking forward to the Network if anything for the tape library that they'll slowly put up there. Don't they own the Smokey Mountain library? Think they might put that up there?
I was really hoping that the whole thing with Shawn screwing Bryan out of the title at Hell In A Cell would have lead to a one off return match with Bryan at Mania, it was even suggested by a good many of the insider-journalists like Alvarez, Keller, even former writers with connects like Bauer. But, I don't think that's happening.
Ah man, I used to be a huge ROH fan in like 04-06... Daniel Bryan, Punk, Samoa Joe, Homicide, Matt Sydal, Nigel McGuinness, Austin Aries... every card had an excellent combination of one of those guys. I kind of stopped following, oddly, around when they started doing PPV shows and the HDNet series. Even then, I'd randomly watch and see great stuff from Tyler Black and Davey Richards (who at one point was my favorite wrestler in the entire world... he was like Dynamite Kid on steroids... oh, wait...). And Steenerico were an amazing team, the matches with the Briscos are out of this world (Generico is wrestling without his mask in FCW right now, and he's on fire). Chikara, I have only seen a few shows of, but it doesn't really come off as my type of thing... I like humor in my wrestling, but I just couldn't get into it. I'd like to look into more.
Late 80s NWA was largely some amazing stuff, the year of 1989 specifically being one of the best years in terms of match quality. As for Smokey Mountain's library, I think it is indeed owned by WWE, since they were a feeder for WWF in the early-mid 90s, but I'd not be surprised if Cornette tried to keep those from them. Not sure on that one.

Nice live stats!
I've been to one ppv (Lockdown 07), and the recent ROH tv taping here in Nashville. Although we did buy ringside seats for ROH Best in the World in June. Been to a handful of Raw and Smackdowns.

We got seats in the 500 section, so pretty far from the ring. But with Roo coming up we didn't have the cash to spend. I'm a little bummed that Punk might not be there, but overall my excitement hasn't waned much. It's still Wrestlemania after all! The Showcase of the Immortals!

Man, Chikara can have lots of stinkers of matches. Every now and then though they'll have some hidden gems. This one's one of my favorites they've done--especially the sequences with Generico and Ibushi.
And yeah, Generico is killing it in NXT. Him and Cesaro pretty much did their ROH match last summer and tore the place down. I'm really looking forward to him getting called up. It's a shame he couldn't keep his gimmick but that would have never worked in WWE.

I'm getting it, if anything so I don't have to go through the hassle of streaming/torrenting. You know, one less thing that could land me a DMCA notice.
I'm considering getting the network... It's really a much better deal than Classics On Deman/24/7 was, and I'm sure they'll be putting their biggest guns up front for the launch as far as content goes. Which could either mean bunches of stuff I've already seen or some of the more rare stuff that few have seen, depending on how they do this thing. They're going to be airing Benoit starring shows, but I still think they'll be editing out Jesse Ventura's commentary on old WWF and WCW things, so I'm very curious how far they're going to go on overall editing, with such a mass amount of programing to be put on the Network.

Any of you dudes read The Masked Man's stuff on Grantland? It's pretty good material. He also has a weekly podcast on there with Peter Rosenberg (the Hot 97 radio host).

I heard they'll be putting disclaimers at the beginning of each of the Chris Benoit shows. That should be pretty harrowing.

I haven't, but I've heard a lot of Rosenberg's interviews with wrestlers and they were fairly good.

Yeah I agree, Safox21. The podcast is usually always a refresher on the Masked Man's previous column. That guy's writing is 2nd to none on Wrestling. And definitely one of my favorite writers currently on Grantland.
Yes! For this thread. Thought it was just me and Bishop for the longest time. This might ass well be the GRRR wrestling thread as it's probably just gonna be me complaining.
Anyone want to take a stab at predictions for Elimination Chamber Sunday now that it looks like the card is set. Here's mine
The Brotherhood (Cody-Goldust) beat Ryback-Curtis Axel (preshow) Outlaws beat Usos to retain tag titles. Titus O'Neill beats Darren Young Big E beats Swagger to retain Intercontinental title Batista beats Del Rio The Wyatt Family beats The Shield Orton wins the Chamber to retain the WWE Title, pinning Bryan last after interference by The Authority.
Post by cory's beard on Feb 18, 2014 16:37:11 GMT -5
I hope this isn't how it will go down, but I believe Bryan will lose to interference as well (probably from Kane to set up a Wrestlemania match with either him or HHH). But they've been pushing Cesaro pretty heavily lately, and I could see it coming down to Cesaro and Orton with Orton coming out on top somehow. Basically, I want Bryan to win but I don't think it will happen.
If the Shield comes out on top, it's going to be in the form of a Roman Reigns spear, but I could see The Wyatts coming out on top due to Ambrose costing them the match somehow--leading to the long teased Shield meltdown/breakup. So The Wyatts are my pick. They need momentum for their WM match.
Batista over Del Rio, easily.
Big E over Swagger easily.
I see Darren Young winning (via a quick roll up or something) and thus continuing the feud.
Outlaws will retain.
I see Rybaxel beating The Brotherhood (setting up for their split and possible WM match as well). Though now that I think about it, I don't know if they would book that way for two teams in the same night, so I dunno.
So for the rumble I talked myself into beleiving there wouldn't be any huge shockers and the card would go about as straight forward as it could. And it did. This cards predictability is even more straight forward than the rumble. Can't happen 2 months in a row right? Wrong, I'm betting it will.
Really my only dark horse bet right now would be Shemus winning the title. Surely it can't hurt to throw him vs. Batista and maybe Orton at mania, and with his Bryan fued scrapped he probably doesn't have another big program for mania. Batista-Orton just has Goldberg-Lesnar written all over it and I just have to convince myself that someone is smart enough to realize that.
Oh ya, and I'm trying really hard to get even the thought of Punk somehow walking out with the title out of my head.
Post by cory's beard on Feb 26, 2014 2:26:18 GMT -5
So I didn't get the network yet. I thought that episodes of RAW and Smackdown would be something like next day on demand, but apparently it's 30 days after air. I can see why they would need to do that (as they probably have deals with the TV stations and HULU), but I'm kind of annoyed that this fact was buried in the mix during the hype train.
I'll get it eventually, probably after Wrestlemania.
lol at Punk not coming back last night... to be completely honest, I really was not wanting to see him come back. I'm a fan and all, have been since the ROH days, but I did not want to see him come back and hotshot into the main event, as many were predicting. As for the show itself last night, it was pretty solid... Uso's and NAO didn't let the crowd affect their match too much, and actually got them into it, which impressed me. Cesaro's going to be one hell of a babyface and I hope they can really get something going with the guy after this breakup. Swagger continues to just be a solid worker with not much else to offer... That Sheild/Wyatts match... wow, WWE MOTY so far, even better than the one they had at Elimination Chamber. Just a brilliantly booked match.
The integrating of the Bryan/HHH and Batista/Orton angles at the end of the show has me optimistic... but WWE's record doesn't suggest it'll turn out the way it really should.
Post by cory's beard on Mar 4, 2014 16:43:03 GMT -5
I do feel a lot better about the Bryan/HHH match if last night is any indication of how the build is going to go for it.
The Usos have been giving awesome matches for the past year. I'm glad they're finally giving them a run with the titles and hope they take them into WM.
Speaking of Cesaro, did anybody see NXT Arrival with Cesaro vs Zayn? That match was incredible and should be a highlight moment for not only Zayn but for Cesaro and his face turn.
