He'll probably end up being a late afternoon tent set, but Phosphorescent would make for a spectacular late night show. Gold tinsel, spanish candles, white petunias and embroidered mariachi suits. It's the anti-light show, but it was just a beautiful presentation nonetheless. Here's a shot I took at his Charlotte show in January.
But there's so many other better artists in my opinion that should have a LN slot before them
This thread is often a center for people who think LN will/should be mostly comprised of EDM or other acts that 'need' LN. The truth is that while there's a number of acts on the lineup that would benefit from a latenight show more than most acts, there isn't a super hard line between the ones that would and the ones that don't, and Bonnaroo rightly likes to schedule a variety of acts in these slots anyway. And for a lot of 'borderline' acts like James Blake and Cut Copy, a tent closer is pretty close to the same thing: remember, headliners start around 9:30-10, which means the preheadline sets around the farm begin just as the sun sets. A James Blake or Cut Copy set that starts at 8:00pm would be just about as good as one that starts at 1am, and probably even better because it won't be at the same time as Disclosure/Danny Brown/Skrillex/name your poison.
The fact is pretty much every act would benefit from LN, and there's a handful of acts that could really use it. Lemme list that shit.
Acts that 'need'/will almost certainly happen at night: Skrillex/Superjam (one of these could/probably will preheadline) Kaskade Disclosure Zedd
Acts that would strongly benefit from late night: Phoenix The Flaming Lips Cut Copy Wiz Khalifa Chromeo Broken Bells James Blake Umphrey's McGee Slightly Stoopid Janelle Monae Chvrches Glitch Mob The list goes on.
Acts that would benefit from happening at night: Everyone else.
Bonnaroo likes to mix up the LN. We will almost certainly see a good bit of EDM. We'll also see some rock, some hip hop, some poppy stuff, some jam, and who knows what else. In the end we'll be glad it's not a Van Halen tribute band. (Can I just say I'm at least a little glad I didn't go that year? Seriously, that might be the worst year on record. It's a matter of taste, but that's the only lineup/schedule that's hard for me to look at and figure out where I would want to be.)
Recent history tells us that a DJ will get one of the LN Which sets. With Frank Ocean on Saturday I think that takes The Flaming Lips out of the running for a LN Which.
Friday Which: Kaskade This: Chvrches > Skrillex Superjam That. Chromeo > Danny Brown Other: Goat > Deafheaven
Saturday Which: Frank Ocean This: Neutral Milk Hotel > Superjam ? That: Darkside > Disclosure Other: Omar Souleyman > Die Antwoord
You don't think there will be another act on the Which for one of those nights? Like last year we had XX >> Pretty Lights.
I know that every year is different. I just think with all the great potential late nights it would be beneficial to have someone either before Kaskade or after Frank Ocean

It's possible but not the norm from what I can remember. Not sure what would be a good transition into Frank Ocean. Maybe they could do the Skrillex Superjam before Kaskade. I would bet that there is only one act on the Which each night. I could be wrong though.
SATURDAY W: Phoenix -> Skrillex Disclosure -> James Blake Glitch Mob -> Umphrey’s Wiz Khalifa -> Danny Brown
As I've said though, most LN acts can be swapped with tent closers.
The change I would least surprise me would be if one more rock act snuck on there in place of James Blake or somebody. That extra rock act could be just about anybody, be it Nick Cave or Cage the Elephant or Mastodon. Or some fucked up combination of all three (Nick Cage the Mastodon).
Oh, and I'm not sure mocks are the best way to think about this. I've also got a '3 of these 4, 2 of these 5' system rolling around based more on genre than anything else, but I'm holding off on posting it until I can acquaint myself better with some of the bands on the lineup I don't know.
As already discussed, The Flaming Lips will probably get after dark, pre-headliner slot, as their current show isn't as complicated of a set-up. Which stage, in the Primus '11, David Byrne '09 slot while Lionel Richie or Vampire Weekend plays the What stage before Jack White.
Break Science will probably close a tent on Thursday, but could also seem them closing an electronic themed tent like Conspirator did last year.
Mastodon should get a late night this year.
Other than that, I have nothing to contribute. I would love it for less predictable acts to get late-night tent shows.
There is always someone like Unchained or ZZ Top that gets an unexpected late-night.
ZZ Top wasn't that unexpected.
I think they would have been better fit for a mid-day What slot. I don't know that their show would have been a fundamentally different experience by day and may have been even better attended by the contingent of folks that don't do late nights. Just my opinion, though.

I wasn't at ZZ Top but I'm pretty sure the attendance was fine. The ZZ Top crowd didn't go to bed at 10. Bonnaroo 'wastes' LN spots on rock acts every year, because even though they'd be fine in the day, they're better at night and catching a sick rock band play a late night show has a lot of appeal.
I can only repeat so many times that Bonnaroo books a mix of LN acts, that you can't and shouldn't expect 14 EDM or jam acts to play anyway, and doing so would be completely counterproductive anyway. You will see 4-6 'hard' EDM acts in LN slots, 3-4 'soft' EDM acts such as James Blake or Broken Bells, and possibly an EDM act on the Which stage. And yes, 3 or 4 LN slots will be 'wasted' on rock acts.
On that subject, who do y'all think those LN rock acts will be? I like the idea of Mastodon, and something's telling me Nick Cave might land a LN spot. I think there's a pretty good chance we'll see Phoenix or Arctic Monkeys on a LN stage.

Give me Phoenix or Arctic Monkeys LN Which one night not conflicting with SuperJam ? and put whatever the hell else you want to fill the other 11 spots.
I have been to Roo for three straight years and have never seen a LN Which set. I really hope that changes this year, it just seems special.

Tedeschi Trucks Band, Umphrey's, Drive By Truckers and possibly Neutral Milk Hotel are all viable candidates from LN spots.

The crowd at ZZ Top was good. I only caught a song or two myself because I tend to wander if there isn't a Must See act out there or if a show I want to see is too crowded to connect with but I heard mostly underwhelming reviews for their show. Good, not great.
The reason I think that they may have been a better fit for mid-day What is because I think that they may hold more appeal to the crowd that camps out at What all day on a blanket. For whatever reason, they seem like they'd have a similar crowd to bands like Allman Bro's, Los Lobos and Black Crows who all fit nicely in that slot.
I certainly don't look for EDM shows but I have enjoyed some over the years and they do seem to be better by night. Lowered inhibitions, a denser crowd, more energy due to not trying to dance in an oven, etc.
I agree that there are all sorts of bands who can and have played LN sets. I personally have enjoyed all sorts of memorable shows, MMJ, Flips, Dresden Dolls and Public Enemy all spring to mind. I just think that the shows that require the most energy to enjoy are best served at night.
As for who I think or hope will be LN, I don't really have a dog in that fight at the moment. Right now I'm just following the confirmations, logical conclusions and speculation and seeing how everything shakes out.

I just have a hard time believing Wayne will not treat roo as a special thing..the terror tour is not complicated just as you said..but with them being featured on blam I think they'll do more of a career spanning retrospective set. The terror stuff just doesn't suit roo as well
2012: White Denim : SBTRKT : Superjam : Punch Bros : Feist : Radiohead
2013: The Stepkids : Dirty Projectors : HAIM : The National : Paul : Animal Collective : R.Kelly : DATSUPERJAM : Byrne & Vincent : SWANS....damn. take me back to 2013

I don't understand how The Terror "doesn't suit Roo." Is that the same way that Nine Inch Nails or Metallica doesn't suit Roo? The new Flips album is dark and trippy and there is a crazy light show that goes along with it. It suits Roo just fine. If anything, the Terror show simply underlines the prospect of the Flips getting a pre-headliner show.

Ok, I apologize if there's already a thread for this topic - I searched around and couldn't find one. But it's a topic I feel needs to be talked about a bit more. Each year, one artist (usually on Saturday night) plays all night until early morning.. like Pretty Lights did last year and many other artists before him...So Who will it be this year?
Glitch Mob? Zedd? Darkside? Kaskade? ...Big Gigantic after the SuperJam maaaybe? hah
