Kanye West - College Dropout has the most votes, closely followed by MBDTF and Late Registration. No Yeezus votes, but that'll be a big part of his setlist too
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In and Murder Ballads both have their supporters, although the Let Love In side has stuck around to state their case
Damon Albarn - His new solo album, Everyday Robots, isn't out yet, so people are just listing Blur albums, which helps a little I guess?
Wiz Khalifa - Slight edge to rolling papers so far
James Blake - S/T and Overgrown are all tied up
Ice Cube - Straight Outta Compton from his NWA days, then 3 of his other albums have multiple votes
Cage the Elephant - S/T and Melophobia are all tied up
Andrew Bird - The Mysterious production of Eggs and Break it Yourself are all tied up
Dr. Dog - Everyone has their own favorite boring Dr. Dog album. Slight edge to Easy Beat
Little Dragon - Early love for Ritual Union, recent push for Machine Dreams
Washed Out - Paracosm, Within and Without, and Life of Leisure are all getting love
Lucero - Single votes for 3 different albums
Polica - Early love for Shulamith, recent push for Give You The Ghost
Ty Segall - Melted and Slaughterhouse appear to both be worthy, Twins has fallen behind
King Khan & The Shrines - Idle No More and The Supreme Genius... are all tied up
Kanye West - I prefer MBDTF, but for anyone who's actually trying to get into Kanye at this point, I'd say Late Registration still. It's packed with incredible beats, and a slightly softer, less abrasive side of Kanye. Afterwards, I would move onto MBDTF.
Wiz - Rolling Papers
James Blake - Overgrown
Ice Cube - I'd make it SOC/Predator to hit all the bases. Since he's pretty much a legacy act at this point, SOC is going to give you a sense of his impact on hip-hop. Predator is just his most accessible solo album.
Cage the Elephant - Melophobia is the better all around album IMO, and will probably be featured more heavily in the live show.
Andrew Bird - I'd say Break it Yourself, but this another artist where I'd suggest a live video to get you started.
Dr. Dog - I'd go with B-Room. I think it's their best album in some time, and since it's their newest, I'd expect to see quite a songs from it on stage.
I guess I would consider the setlist heavy album to be an essential album, whereas the starter album helps introduce you to the artist (typically early work).
Judging from this article, Kanye's sets are really diverse for this tour. Yea, 10 of those 40 songs are from Yeezus but he's playing stuff from every single album.
If you just want to know a couple of songs and don't want to invest the time to get to know Kanye, yea sure, listen to Yeezus. If you want to get to know Kanye as an artist then there's no question that you should listen to MBDTF. It's his best album and it's his most accessible.

Pretty sure he only played 40 songs one time. When he had an opening act he was playing ~ 27 song sets, and with no opener hes been playing ~35 song sets. Regardless, the 10 Yeezus songs make up about a third of the set on average. Not to mention that the majority of the older songs at the end of the setlist he is only playing 1 verse and the chorus.

Got it. That makes a little more sense. I still say MBDTF is the best starter for a Kanye noob. In this instance your idea of listing two albums would probably be the best so someone could get a better idea of the scope of the show.

Kanye - no love for Graduation? Stronger, Champion, Good Life, Can't Tell Me Nothing... Cage the Elephant - ST FTW James Blake - ST is the more representative record of his sound. Overgrown is probably the better record.

Graduation is easily his worst album. Easily.
I'm not sure what you mean regarding James Blake, either. Overgrown is more representative of his current sound, no?

Come on 'she don't believe in shooting stars, she only believes in shoes and cars' 'people talk so much shit about me in barbershops they forget to get their hair cut'. That is lyrical gold. Kanye is like the rap equivalent of Robert Pollard.
I think Yeezus is also a great record. I think my least favorite is MBDTF.

You know, there's a difference between what's "the best" and whats "your favorite".

I'd like to nominate The Stand Ins for Okkervil River. I know many will say Black Sheep Boy but to me this is their best album and the one that turned me on to them in general.
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy [E-Note: Then move on to College Dropout. Then everything else. Man's a genius] Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In Wiz Khalifa - Rolling Papers James Blake - Overgrown Warpaint - Warpaint Jon Batiste - Social Music
Bands that Noone can Agree On
The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi are both strong contenders and probably both worth listening to
Damon Albarn - His new solo album, Everyday Robots, isn't out yet, so people are just listing Blur albums
Ice Cube - Listen to Straight Outta Compton, then go to either The Predator or AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted.
Cage the Elephant - S/T and Melophobia are still all tied up!
Andrew Bird - The Mysterious production of Eggs and Break it Yourself are still all tied up!
Dr. Dog - Everyone still has their own favorite boring Dr. Dog album. Slight edge to Easy Beat
Little Dragon - Early love for Ritual Union, recent push for Machine Dreams

Ty Segall - Melted and Slaughterhouse appear to both be worthy, Twins has fallen behind
King Khan & The Shrines - The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines has a slight edge over Idle No More
Close to enough votes for a "Consensus"
Kaskade Polica Okkervil River Cherub
Lonely bands that haven't been brought up yet
A Tribe Called Red Greensky Bluegrass The Master Musicians of Jajouka led by Bachir Attar, with special guests Billy Martin, Marc Ribot, DJ Logic and Shazad Ismaily
Slightly Less Lonely Bands with only one vote
Tedeschi Trucks Band - Tedeschi Trucks Band Live Bobby Womack - The Bravest Man in the Universe Slightly Stoopid - Chronchitis Amos Lee - Amos Lee Die Antwoord - $O$ Yonder Mountain String Band - Elevation The Glitch Mob - Drink the Sea Seasick Steve - Dog House Music Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve DakhaBrakha - Light Seun Kuti - From Africa With Fury: Rise Blackberry Smoke - Little Piece of Dixie Hannibal Buress - My Name is Hannibal Sarah Jarosz - Follow Me Down Jonathan Wilson - Fanfare Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - We the Common Valerie June - Pushin' Against A Stone The Black Lillies - Whiskey Angel Caveman - CoCo Beware Big Sam's Funky Nation - King of the Party Cass McCombs - Wit's End Those Darlins - Screws Get Loose Lake Street Dive - Bad Self Portraits
Pushin' Against A Stone is the only major release for Valerie June.
She appears to have 3 other full-length albums, which is typically my definition of major release. Not trying to get into the nitty-gritty of what's on what label or w/e. Am i wrong?

You're right. I was taking "major release" to mean a widely released, critically acclaimed album. Pushin' Against A Stone is her first on a label and seems to be the only one available through the usual digital music services, so that was my reasoning.

We the Common is definitely the place to start with Thao and the Get Down Stay Down.
And I'm going to make things difficult here and say the place to start with Hannibal Buress is Animal Furnace. Both are funny but he got much better with his delivery and joke choices by the time Animal Furnace came out.

Jack White - White Blood Cells Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Avett Brothers - Emotionalism Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say... Flips- Yoshimi Cake - Comfort Eagle Cage the Elephant - S/T Dr. Dog - Fate Danny Brown - Old
Left out some I thought were obvious or haven't listened to their whole discographies.
A Tribe Called Red - Nation II Nation (No personal experience with this one, but this one appears to be the place to start.) Greensky Bluegrass - Five Interstates (Ditto.) I've already voted for the three albums below, now here's the case for each of them.
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy: Their breakout album and probably the fan favorite. "For Real" and "Black" make up 2 of the first 4 tracks, and if you don't like those songs, you aren't going to like this band. They will play both at Bonnaroo.
Washed Out - Paracosm: Life of Leisure is not at all representative of what Washed Out sounds like these days. Within just isn't very good, it is a growing pains album that is awkwardly stuck between the laptop chillwave thing and a full band sound. Paracosm is a much smoother combination of both those poles, and it will dominate the setlist.
Lucero - That Much Further West: This is still their defining album, and it's the halfway point between the alt-country of the early days and the slicker southern rock that followed. They were opening with the title track on their last tour, and their sets usually peak with "Tears Don't Matter Much." This one should be a no-brainer.

I've seen them twice. It seems like songs off Stand Ins always get the most fan interaction (Lost Coastlines, Singer Songwriter, On Tour especially), so I'd say that was the fan favorite. I think their best record is Stage Names but they seem to have gotten away from the mostly acoustic sound of that record on 'I Am Very Far' and then taken a step back toward it with 'Silver Gymnasium'

I respectfully disagree with just about everything in this post. The Stage Names is probably the most "rock" thing they've ever done, and The Stand Ins is generally regarded as one of their weakest albums.

I am among the few who really likes The Stand Ins but everything you say here is correct.

To clarify, I really like the Stand Ins, but I think it's a cut below Black Sheep Boy, Stage Names, Silver Gymnasium, and Don't Fall in Love.
Disclosure - Settle James Blake - Self Titled Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say White Stripes - De Stijl Conway - Late Registration (Celebration, Addiction, Drive Slow, getouttahere)
