Okkervil River basically only plays Lost Coastlines from The Stand-Ins.
Maybe my opinion is colored by the fact that I saw them twice soon after its release (Coachella 2009, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2009), so they were playing a lot more material from it and Stage Names.
Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - We the Common Valerie June - Pushin' Against A Stone
Bands that Noone can Agree On
The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi are both strong contenders and probably both worth listening to
Damon Albarn - His new solo album, Everyday Robots, isn't out yet, so people are just listing Blur albums
Ice Cube - Listen to Straight Outta Compton, then go to either The Predator or AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted.
Cage the Elephant - S/T has a slight edge over Melophobia
Andrew Bird - The Mysterious production of Eggs and Break it Yourself are still all tied up!
Dr. Dog - Everyone still has their own favorite boring Dr. Dog album. Slight edge to Easy Beat and Fate, the only albums with multiple votes
Little Dragon - Early love for Ritual Union, recent push for Machine Dreams
Washed Out - Paracosm, Within and Without, and Life of Leisure are all getting love
Lucero - Single votes for 3 different albums. A strong case made for That Much Further West on page 5
Ty Segall - Melted and Slaughterhouse appear to both be worthy, Twins has fallen behind
Okkervil River The Stage Names and Black Sheep Boy are the main contenders. Check out page 5 for some good Okkervil River discussion
King Khan & The Shrines - The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines has a slight edge over Idle No More
Close to enough votes for a "Consensus"
Kaskade Bobby Womack Slightly Stoopid Die Antwoord Polica Dakhabrakha Seun Kuti Cherub Cass McCombs Lake Street Dive
Lonely bands that haven't been brought up yet
A Tribe Called Red Greensky Bluegrass The Master Musicians of Jajouka led by Bachir Attar, with special guests Billy Martin, Marc Ribot, DJ Logic and Shazad Ismaily
Slightly Less Lonely Bands with only one vote

For the sake of argument: Leviathan by Mastodon is tied for my favorite album of theirs, but I do not think it is the most apt for a starter album for two reasons: IMHO It is not as accessible (especially to people not terribly comfortable with metal) AND it does not very successfully bridge the divide between their earlier drum driven sludge(y) metal and their current brand of progressive/experimental metal. I believe that Blood Mountain strikes a balance in their collection and is an excellent starter for that reason.
The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin (and then watch the documentary by the same name on YouTube) Little Dragon - Ritual Union Washed Out - Paracosm Lucero - That Much Further West

Grouplove - Spreading Rumors.
Excellent album, weird detuned pipes and synth drums give it a polished studio sound that only underlines the eclectic nature of their music. Their live show at 'Roo this year will be excellent.
Everyone that chose ArchAndroid over Electric Lady is wrong.
I think Archandroid is a lot more adventurous/ambitious/different and is a great debut full length. I like them both but the only argument I can see for EL is that her Roo setlist will more than likely be dominated by it.

I really disagree with Vampire Weekend's debut as a starter album. I just know too many people that really disliked that album, got into one or two songs on Contra, and then fell in love with the band with Modern Vampires. That doesn't mean VW or Contra are bad albums, but they are a little divisive. Give someone Modern Vampires and there's a much greater chance they'll love Vampire Weekend; give them the debut album and they might just get turned off by it.
MV is adventurous, but it's still very pop/rock. Closest thing it sounds to is baroque, mid-career Beatles... and everybody loves the friggin Beatles. The first album sounds like barebones 2000s indie rock, and the band's personality is much more central to it. But not everyone immediately likes that personality.

I just think EL is a much better album. Tightrope is probably her best song but all of EL is good.

Fair enough. I'm probably biased anyways since I've been listened to Arch much more.

At this point I think the thread contains most of the information anyone would need to start their research, so I'm not really going to update it much anymore.
