I had been on the fence about The Terror, having really liked it as an album but not really excited to see that material live. Their set in mexico blew me away though. Their beatles covers were sublime, I lost my shit during she's so heavy.
Did they play it for like 20 mins? I was a little loopy when I saw it and I couldn't take it after a while. I swore it went on for 3 hours.

I don't think it was that long, but it was definitely extended. although I had been drinking all day, so my concept of time may not have been normal.

I found the version they played that night. I am not watching it again but I skipped through it and its funny for people go from super pumped to standing there at the end covering their ears. Dude didn't even get the whole thing. I don't need to hear that riff again until I am 40.
Ps. I am set on the jam being Drozd keys/synth, Wayne vocals and some stuff with Jack White on guitar. They are buddies.
ps. One of the best covers of all time, too short though:
ah man! I was listening to this all day yesterday. Such a good cover. The original version was one of my favorite songs at an early age and really shaped my musical tastes for the decade that followed.
Actually when they do covers I think they are awful. That Dark Side album was horrendous. But I like them when they do their own material.
I'm not that big a fan of their DSotM album, but I loved their live covers of Heroes and Gates of Steel. Heroes in particular was absolutely incredible, especially combined with the new light show.

I'm trying to begin my journey into the Flaming Lips and I'm staring down what looks to be 40 different projects.
Is anyone awesome enough to list 10-20 essential (not necessarily the best, or most likely to be on the Roo setlist) songs that would give me a feel for their sound(s)?

Yes. I would bet on all of these. Don't miss this set, anyone.
Opening with "look the sun is rising" all tour I think.
I saw them in Memphis last year. I'd never heard of them until that moment and I honestly didn't pay that much attention to the show. There were way too many awesome things going on in the audience at the time. I liked the bit that I saw though and now that I know a bit more about them I'll check them out at Roo, if conflicts aren't to bad.
I tried to enjoy their DSotM set in 2010, but I had serious back issues that entire day. Their set in 2007 was great, even though I saw pretty much the same show two months before. I'm curious if they'll get a third LN though. I could see a pre-headliner set.
The new sets are more psychedelic, less carnival. A little darker, but still a freak show party with a mix of the mid & late-period hits. I imagine we'll get the Beatles covers they pulled out at MMJ's Mexi-fest, a classic Floyd, Bowie and Elton song, and hopefully more than one old, loudass, deep cut. They did Unconsciously Screaming from Priest Driven Ambulance on the beach and it was gloriously apeshittt.
I'm really looking forward to this show, but hope it's more "carnivally" than some of you have said their recent shows were. I've never seen them, and have this high on my list of b'roo shows. Ps watch "the soft bulletin" doc on YouTube or "fearless freaks" if you can find it. They're good primers if you're just getting into them.
I decided im skipping on Big Guava. I dont think I can take 3 days at Ford 1800AskWhovever Mid Florida or current sponsor here Amplitheatre
Awesome, kinda wanted to go but gotta save money. I'm so glad I got my Local Natives tickets, completely sold out now. Have you ever been to the State Theatre? How is it? Ringing in my 21st birthday with them I will have to miss all of these because I go to school in Gainesville, I'll be back to Tampa this summer though. I'm jealous of my younger brother going to the free Action Bronson show. Really want to check out Cloud Nothings at Roo.

NO! I havnt gotten a ticket for it! I just called about tickets and Daddy Kool doesnt have any and not available on ticketmaster. It doesnt say sold out anywhere, just not available. Im guessing they might move the show from the State Theatre. Its an OK venue not good but not bad either. Look for the show to be moved to Jannus Landing or The Ritz Ybor. I think they underestimated the pull for this show. Any other questions PM me since we are way off from talking about the Flips at this point

Awesome! They really should start playing more old songs: Jesus Shootin' Heroin, One Million Billionth Of A Millisecond On A Sunday Morning, Five Stop Mother Superior Rain, etc. would be amazing -- but it won't happen, probably ever. It was awesome that they resurrected 'Bag Full Of Thoughts' for their 30th Anniversary Special on BBC last year. Also, Slow Nerve Action would be the best closer, but they haven't played that since 2005 if I remember correctly.
Zactly. It pains me that they have such a treasure trove of fantabulous psyche-punk material that Wayne deems unworthy of dusting off for the stage. Especially when their sets have been stuck in a stagnant, pure-spectacle mode for 10+ yrs.

My number 1 wish will always be "Be My Head". From what's listed on setlist.fm they've only played it once since 1994, so I'll mark it as quite unlikely.
