Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Launchpad, I can't believe you've never seen STS9! Very surprising considering most of the shows you talk about. I've caught them a few times and they're a really fun show. Interested to see how the new lineup sounds.
Considering selling my mountain jam tix and buying tix for this.
I KNOW! The stars have just never aligned. It's not like I'm ignorant of them though. Golden Gate and New Soma (I prefer the acoustic version) are stables of my daily commute. I was supposed to see them in NYC two years ago; but I snoozed, tix sold out, and were too pricey on the second hand market. Excited to see them at this fest.

Bassnectar, Moby (DJ Set), Big Gigantic, Flying Lotus, Bonobo (I know its "live", but he uses a turntable), Infected Mushroom, Griz, Paper Diamond, Araab Muzik, Robert Delong, The Range...plus I'm sure there are others I'm not familiar with.
This is a really solid under the radar lineup in terms of techno-based music. Very impressive. Why is Kendrick Lamar on this lineup though?
When I first received the initial MCP email about this fest:

I had actually expected a more diverse lineup because of that description, but they definitely kept a heavy electronic hand when booking. And Jimmy, I think Phyre Fest was asking, because it seems as though you have a very interesting definition of techno...

I remember last year I had a conversation with an older friend about what acts we were most excited to see at Roo. I mentioned that Pretty Lights was pretty high on that list; and he said "Yeah the late night techno act never dissapoints!" So I just associate anyone referring to EDM as "techno" as just being someone who is old...
Stop trying to make me eat dinner at 4pm Jimmy!

Just got confirmed as the college ambassador of this fest to my school... Gonna get a free ticket as long as I complete all the requirements. Kind of a bummer since I already bought a ticket. But another one that's free is pretty awesome!

What's involved in being a college ambassador? I've never heard of that.

I'm not 100% sure what the requirements are as of now. So far they have just asked me to share facebook posts about the ticket sale and they asked for my address and said they are sending me promotional materials (flyers/posters) within the next two weeks. I'm guessing they just want me to paper my campus? We'll see.

Or is Nicolas Jaar now considered "Electronic Dance Music"? I never understood why people threw around EDM so loosely. There is plenty of "techno" that I would never dance to.
Honestly not sure where EDM really came from. Not all electronic music is "dance" music.
A lot of the stuff that people dance to also has it's own specific name (see dubstep, trap, house, etc). That's why I always continued to use "techno" as the parent term and kinda disregarded this "EDM" nonsense .
Just the notion of called Nicolar Jaar and other minimalist techno "EDM" sounds totally off to me. And that's what makes EDM not the parent category in my mind.
"Techno" on the other hand is very ambiguous to me and serves as a good term for a parent category of app techno music.
And if anything, I would say that "EDM" is a term more likely to be made up by some old white guy working for a music awards company. "Oh, it's that electronic music that all the kids are dancing to," which is probably the most ignorant and I'll informed way to categorize all of techno/electronic based music.

I'd like to go to this but OH that drive. As far as the ambassador thing, it's pretty easy. Just submit your reports on time, take your screenshots, and do a little postering and you are good. I did it for them for Counterponit.
