Now that I've had a few hours to let it sink in:
The show was absolutely fantastic. The way he makes the music live is so fucking awesome, I was beyond impressed with the way he makes all of the beats live, that must be some hard work. The bass was overwhelming in a good way, it hit you in the face and the feeling didn't leave until he stopped. He played a good amout of You're Dead! and Cosmagrama. He changed up parts of the songs too, and it was great. He had the crowd rocking the whole time Everyone was dancing from the minute he came on stage until the minute he left
But my absolute favorite part of the whole set was (spoiler)
HE DID A CAPTIN MURPHY SEGMENT WITHIN THE SET. He did about four or five songs off of Duality (Including between friends) then went back to mixing.
Then there was the visuals. Holy shit were those awesome. The three layers were trippy and perfectly in sync with the music. Every once in awhile the lights would illuminate him and allow you to see him mixing. Flashing colors, and patters took up the back later that complimented the 3D visuals on the front screen.

The whole fucking show was epic. He had a new cube set-up that was mind-blowing, completely entrancing. The Captain Murphy portion of the show was especially delicious as well.

It was cool when he stepped away from all the extravagant effects of the cube and had the simple skull back drop during the Captain Murphy. It incited a phenomen that I've only seen 2 other times - When an act on stage is kicking so much ass, it sucks the crowd toward the stage and everybody moves up 10 feet at the same time. That cube was wicked, though.
But, what the hell is up with Thundercat? Is blows my mind that a band of obviously very talented musicians can make music that bad. It was like they were all trying to outdo one another and it just made it an unholy, incoherent, unlistenable mess. Thundercat has no business leading a band. Hands down the worst performance I've ever seen.
2021 08-07: Japanese Breakfast @ Union Transfer 09-08: My Morning Jacket / Brittany Howard @ The Mann 09-18: Soccer Mommy @ Union Transfer 10-01 thru 10-03: Austin City Limits Music Festival 10-19: Waxahatchee @ Union Transfer 10-27: Arlo Parks @ The Foundry 11-09: Squid @ Johnny Brenda's 11-17: Monophonics @ World Cafe Live 12-01: Caribou @ Union Transfer
I want to echo the earlier comments about the Atlanta show. Loved the cube setup and the new material he played was great live (especially Dead Man's Tetris). Would love to see him at Bonnaroo next year.
He definitely got bigger than his last 2012 show so I could see him returning for sure. Can he top his last show? Debatable.
crazykittensmile was telling me that of the three times she's seen him, the 2012 show was the worst (still great, but worst of the three). That show was incredible, but I'm apt to believe that he can top it, and it's even more amazing.

I love you Monster, but you're nuts. I was eating up the Thundercat stuff. He was having a blast up there. The drummer was great, and as I told someone earlier, Thundercat sounded like George Benson and Miles Davis had a baby. And I meant that in a good way.

You didn't like this skull?
I absolutely liked that skull. I was just saying that I liked that he stripped it down for a minute. It worked well as a contrast to the rest of the show. If I had a choice, I would take all cube skulls over simple back drop skulls.

I can't believe I'm hearing this from you. The terribleness of that band had a much bigger and lasting impact on me than the greatness of the Flying Lotus set. I had a group of six people with me that all agree. I don't care how much fun he had up there, I would rather have my ear drums rubbed against a cheese grater than listen to that hack perform again. I can see how they can probably thrive in a controlled, studio environment, but holy, stay away from the stage.

In all honesty, that was just an excuse for me to post my favorite picture from last night.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, though.
An interesting honesty experiment would be for me to have heard that without a/knowing who it was and b/not already being super geeked for the FlyLo portion. I wonder if my opinion would be different. Perhaps.
Thundercat sucked so bad. One of the worst live performances I've seen ever. FlyLo was good, though it was a bit short IMO. I liked his Roo set better; it was just more intense overall than the show I saw last night.
Haven't seen anyone post about what happened Sunday night at Cat's Cradle in NC...
The 3D screen didn't fit on stage. Instead, they had a normal projection rig. As a result, FlyLo invited Thundercat and company back on stage to jazz out during the rest of his set. I believe this is the first time he's played with a live band in front of an audience.
While I was pretty stoked about this, it was way too free form. That's something that bucked me about Thundercat's set too: it'd begin with a familiar verse/hook, then just turn into chaos before bringing it back to the structure. Washed, rinsed, and repeated. If FlyLo does this again, executing a more polished sound is key.

That sounds pretty odd. I agree with everyone criticizing Thundercat. On record he's not terrible, but live he just schizophrenically screws around. Pretty hard to get into and doesn't really mesh well with Fly Lo's show.
Show last night was pretty awesome. I can see why some of you guys are hating on Thundercat. He had no real stage set up, it was pretty much just him with an acoustic guitar wearing a furry hat. I dug it though, he covered the Adventure Time theme, so that was kinda fun.
Flying Lotus was sick. Kinda wish he had played Do The Astral Plane, Massage Situation, and a few other of his classics; but he had a new album to promote so I can see why it was mostly just new material. His stage set up was pretty much just a smaller version of the cube that Outkast was touring with all summer. Which is fine with me, looked pretty cool. I went absolutely nuts when he played Putty Boy Strut. There was also this guy dressed as the grim reaper who kept showing up on stage and then crowd surfed. The only real drawback was they definitely oversold the venue. It was just a sea of humanity of people on top of people. Kinda lame, especially at the begining when people were trying to dance, but there was no room to. Eventually the smell of marijuana smoke filled the air and everyone seemed to calm down, chill, and enjoy the show. Good time; glad I went.

Oh forgot to mention, he did a whole meddley as Captain Murphy. That was definitely unexpected and hearing Mighty Morphin Foreskin and Killing Joke live was so cool.

This show was incredible, but you all already knew that. More importantly, Thundercat is INCREDIBLE. Didn't see the whole schizophrenic stream of ridiculousness that seemed to be expressed here. The man was locked in, has an amazing voice, probably some of the best bass chops I've ever seen. I mean just epic. I danced my ass off the whole time.
