Clark > Jamie XX was one of the best 4hrs of my life. Clark was on fire and Jamie XX grooved an all vinyl set that included a 10min disco edit of his brand new track. Fucking wow.

My musical highlight, hands down, was Ryley Walker. The group was channeling the furious improv moments of the Doors + Tim Buckley. An intense performance; using a backing band is something I hope he does a lot more of. Some great artists at this festival, but the bar has now been set pretty high. Everything has been run so smoothly too... sets (at least the ones I attended) started and finished on time. As long as you aren't jumping from the Standard to the KMA, it was pretty easy to catch complete performances and still get a good spot for the next show. The only downside, for me, has been the photographers furiously jumping around the front of the stage for the entire show... really distracting. At times I was wondering if I was attending a concert, or attending a photo/video shoot. Ok, so it wasn't that bad. But I need something to complain about, and the music hasn't let me down yet
Tentative Schedule for Saturday: SQÜRL-> A Winged Victory for the Sullen -> Coupler -> Holly Herndon -> Laurie Anderson w/ Kronos Quartet -> Tyondai Braxton -> Hildur Guðnadóttir -> Grouper, and ending the day with either Nels Cline or Ben Frost (can’t decide!!)
We totally flaked last night after Ryley. It was good we ended on a high note. Did The Standard ever hit capacity?
See you folks at brunch. I'll be the dude in the Grateful Dead shirt and looking like he don't belong.
Surprisingly no. There were a good amount of people there but it never seemed to be in danger of getting full. The attendance for both dropped dramatically in the second half of their sets. I actually thought repeatedly of how much smaller Jamie xx's show was versus how big it will be at Bonnaroo. Very glad I saw him here. Also, there was the added bonus of El Cappo staying until the very end of Jamie xx and seeing his wife breaking it down. For me, it's awesome to know they really do love music and it's not just some bullshit he says to sell an image.
The Bad Plus was easily my favorite set of the night. I keep coming across people who weren't that impressed with it, but I certainly was (and I'm not a big fan of the album). Ryley Walker was runner-up for me - along with HIVE*, which the more I think about, the more I like. Walker's new album is just incredible, and his live show totally loved up to the standard set by the album, even if it was pretty different (much longer songs, far less emphasis on vocal melody).
Clark and Demdike Stare were also quite good. I'm super happy with hw the weekend started out.
*Speaking of, the guy who was dancing at the front of HIVE last night was awesome. It seemed like a few of the people around me were annoyed/distracted by it, but I thought it was really cool and illustrated a side of HIVE that I wasn't really expecting. (If Dancing Guy was one of you guys, then may I say that you are awesome.)

Caught Rival Consoles and Nosaj early at the Standard. Perfect pairing, really dug the head-nodding vibe both of those brought early in the night. Nice intro to the weekend.
Back at TN Theater, Rachel Grimes was a worthy replacement for Harold Budd - and man, is that venue gorgeous or what??? Kronos, I'll give 'em another chance but when they broke out the rubber squeaky chicken and stuffed animals as a part of their Wu Man set they kind of lost me!
Quick bite between shows at Yassin's Falafel - highly recommended for quick/cheap and only a two-block hop from TN Theater. 5 star reviews across the board at Yelp and I'd give 'em the same for the falafel. My only caveat - don't ask for the spicy sauce unless you mean it! I loved it on their falafel, but it is FIRE!
Jetted back out to Standard for Clark and Jamie xx with half an hour of Demdike/Haxan sandwiched in between. This town is even more walkable than Asheville, which is great. Clark always wins in my book, but I actually preferred his Moogfest set last yr - seemed more cohesive with the sound overall and those green oscilloscope visuals? Not sure what it was, but for the first half of the set it seemed like he didn't stick with any one groove for more than two minutes. Last half was better.
Jamie xx laid down some body, house and soul to close it out and gets bonus points for the all-vinyl set in my book. Dave, I must've been right next to you as I was dancing next to El Cappo and his wife as well for a good 20 mins or so! Considered Teknox late night, but was pretty faded by then! Did anyone else go?

Heads up - AWVFTS already filling out quickly on the ground floor at KMA and it's 2:45 - this may be the first capacity show of the weekend, get here if you wanna be here...

Possibly. I moved around several times during Jamie's set. I was at the very right near the front at the end. Did you see the two guys dancing with their scarves? It was interesting.
Maybe there's more one-day people today? I ran into a few people who bought single-day tickets for today.
I'd guess that there isn't much else going on in her time slot.
That's gotta be it. Place is rammed to the rafters in the main room. I have a Herculean tolerance for electronic noise/weirdness and I only lasted 30 minutes. I never really have been able to latch onto anything she does. That + the Max Headroom visuals did me in.
On a positive note, Loscil and AWVFTS earlier were sublime. Wish AWVFTS would have let the crowd chill/sit/lie/melt rather than making folks stand, but I know capacity was the issue. Early dinner at Stock and Barrell before Herndon was bomb. Retired to hotel room now to recoup and have a few beers before the night's festivities begin. Gonna be chilly out there!

We have eerily similar schedules (and I think we've been talking on Twitter too). I was at WVFTS too and also went to Stock & Barrel for an early lunch. Great minds think alike, I suppose.
Much like Hopscotch, one of the things I really appreciate about Big Ears is how many artists I see running around between shows.
Smaller fests are the bomb for that. You start playing music because you're a fan of it. Seeing those people that are on the same level as me always makes me feel more connected to them.
I'm so excited for tonight. Here's to having my ears bleed.

STOP STALKING ME!!!!
(just kidding. great minds think - and drink - alike! sounds like we're on the same page, for sure. out of curiosity, you didn't go to yassin's also? i had a conversation with a guy there - if you did, then that was me also and we've already met - lol...)
