On the road now headed for Old Dominion. I'll have my thoughts up then.
I just wanted to say that it was great seeing the people I know and meeting those I didn't. Safe travels to everyone. Hope to see y'all in September and Raleigh.
That's odd. They must have been pointed further back because I didn't notice them. I know they turned them up at the end because Gira said he wanted to see everyone.
They were... two lights from the top two corners of the stage, aimed mid-to-back seating... the people a few rows ahead of me were holding up their hands to block out the light...

That would have sucked. I am hoping it was just an oversight because it would be kind of a dick move to blind people purposefully.

I had such a great time Friday seeing Nosaj Thing, Tyondai Braxton:HIVE, SQÜRL, Clark, and Jamie XX! Brunch with you folks was lovely as always. Next year I am, without a doubt, getting a full weekend pass. Even though I didn't plan on seeing Hive and SQÜRL, their performances and seeing them at such intimate venues made a whole different feel than I was anticipating. Next year, I will go to the shows on suggestions. Looking at youtube videos and listening to works just doesn't prepare you for how great these artists are.
I didn't make it down for this year's event. What was the secret show(s)?
I'm not sure if it counts as a secret show, but the first hour of what was billed as "Bing & Ruth & Friends" was actually Yuki Namata Resnick (the violinist who was performing with Max Richter) performing a new piece that her and Bryce Dessner wrote together then pieces by Bach, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Max Richter.

That Dessner piece was amazing... At times it sounded like there were 2 or 3 violins playing. Holy talent.

I know! I kept looking if she was working a loop pedal or something. I was shocked when I realized all of that sound of coming out of that instrument in real time.
This morning I come down to the hotel lobby and Bills Morrison and Frisell and Frisell's band were chilling in the lobby. Got to talk to Morrison about film for a bit. What a fucking weekend.
I had listened to his albums multiple times before Bonnaroo, but his live show was just next level kind of stuff. I was really taken by surprise with how much I loved his show. The more I think about it, he's probably #2 for the weekend. I talked to in the lobby afterward and the word that kept coming to my mind was 'captivating'. If he was singing, my eyes were on him the whole time with undivided attention.

Such good info! I wasn't originally planning on seeing him at Coachella, but now I'm really hoping it's possible.

I would wholeheartedly recommend it even if he's on a big stage.
Kids are finally put down and I have a moment to reflect.
Top 5: 1. Ben Frost - I knew this show was going to be special but no clue that it would be this special. The two drummers just highlighted Frost's skull shattering noise. 2. Swans - Like I even need to go into that performance. Swans are Swans. It's loud. It's dark. It's apocalyptic. 3. Perfume Genius - Probably my biggest surprise of the weekend. He was great. 4. Ryley Walker - This man NEEDS to play Bonnaroo. His playing, his on-stage charisma. It fired on all cylinders Friday night. First great set I saw this past weekend. 5. Amen Dunes - I've loved this dude every time that I've seen him. Saturday was no exception.
I was hoping AWVFTS would have clicked for me there, alas, it did not. I'm also bummed that I missed a vast majority of Kronos performances. I did catch 40 Cannons before I ran out of a capacity venue. That's my fault though. I should have known better.
I also learned this weekend that I'm not even close to festival shape. I'm starting to work on that before I head to Atlanta.
Amen Dunes and Ryley Walker were both pretty great. I especially liked that I got to watch Amen Dunes sound check for a long whole. It was interesting to see how he set up his sound and interacted with the crew.

So jealous.
Me too. Dave Maynar, you said you were coming to see me sometime. Bring her too. She needs a tour of Clemson.

I listened to Way Out Weather on my ride home today. It makes me sad that I didn't complete the trifecta of Walker/Amen Dune/Steve Gunn. Did anyone see him this go round? I feel like steveternal did but I don't think he said how he was.
